Neglected tropical parasites including soil-transmitted helminths, food-borne helminths and schistosomes remain a public health concern across much of the world including Southeast Asia. Abiotic and biotic environmental drivers not only directly impact helminth transmission but are also essential parameters for stable intermediate host ecologies. These environmental risk factors thus must be considered for disease control. To better understand the role of the environment, ongoing and new areas of research and the expansion of monitoring techniques such as environmental DNA are on the rise. Thi

We have evaluated DNA synthesis rate (S rate) and time (Ts) and tritiated thymidine labelling index (LI) of peripheral blood (PB) and/or bone marrow (BM) leukaemic blasts (Bl) in nineteen cases of acute leukaemia (twelve non-lymphoblastic, AnLL, and seven lymphoblastic, ALL), in one case of non-Hodgkin's leukaemic lymphoma and in a case of plasma cell leukaemia. The LI of PB-Bl was significantly lower than that of BM-Bl (range 0.1-6.2% and 1.9-19.5%, respectively; P less than 0.01). The S rate was higher for PB-Bl than for BM-Bl (range 3.5-11.3 and 2.5-9.5 mol X 10(-18)/min; P less than 0.02)

BACKGROUND: Bladder cancer is a very heterogeneous disease as regards natural history. Environmental exposures, constitutional genetic and/or epigenetic background may affect not only the likelihood of bladder tumor occurrence, but also the histologic type of cancer and its outcome. Currently, only a few data are available to study the prognostic role of genetic and environmental factors. Likewise, data on the economic burden of bladder cancer and the longitudinal impact of the disease and the treatments on patient quality of life are scarce.
METHODS: COBLAnCE is a large French-based clinical

BACKGROUND: The investigation of the environmental contribution for developmental neurotoxicity is very critical. Many environmental chemical exposures are now thought to contribute to the development of neurological disorders, especially in children. Results from animal studies may guide investigations of human populations towards identifying either environmental toxicants that cause or drugs that protect from neurotoxicity and may help in treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders.
OBJECTIVE: To study both the protective and therapeutic effects of N-acetyl cysteine on brain intoxication indu

Biocontainment strategies, such as kill switches, have been developed to avoid the unintended proliferation of genetically engineered microbes (GEMs) intended for open-release environmental applications. However, the presence of GEM DNA after successful biocontainment presents new environmental risks and challenges for monitoring. In this study, we investigated whether biocontainment using a CRISPR-Cas9 kill switch, which causes double-strand breaks in target genes essential for GEM growth, could resolve this challenge in a model Escherichia coli GEM. Surprisingly, the escape rates of the GEM

Environmental toxicants are increasingly implicated in male reproductive disorders, highlighting the need for physiologically relevant in vitro testicular models for toxicological testing. We previously developed a testis organoid system that recapitulates key architectural and endocrine features of native tissue; however, its suitability for toxicological applications requires validation. In this study, cadmium, a well-characterized environmental heavy metal and testicular toxicant, was used as a positive control to evaluate model responsiveness. Testis organoids were exposed to increasing co

Viruses have the potential to influence microbial community structure and elemental cycling in soils, but it remains unclear how these communities are distributed across space and time, which can shape how they respond to environmental change and impact ecosystem processes. Mediterranean climate ecosystems, with their pronounced seasonal moisture fluctuations, offer an ideal system to examine viral biogeography. While previous studies hint at spatial structuring and moisture controls on viral communities, temporal responses to seasonal moisture shifts have not been comprehensively investigated

BACKGROUND: Thiram, a representative dithiocarbamate pesticide, has been widely applied in agriculture to prevent fungal infections in crops. However, its excessive residues in food and aquatic products pose serious health risks, including hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, and neurotoxicity. Conventional detection techniques such as chromatography and mass spectrometry, though accurate, require complex instrumentation, skilled operation, and laboratory conditions, making them unsuitable for on-site testing. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a portable, rapid, and sensitive sensing pl

Many different lifestyle factors and chemicals present in the environment are a threat to the reproductive tracts of humans. The potential for parental preconception exposure to alter gametes and for these alterations to be passed on to offspring and negatively affect embryo growth and development is of concern. The connection between maternal exposures and offspring health is a frequent focus in epidemiological studies, but paternal preconception exposures are much less frequently considered and are also very important determinants of offspring health. Several environmental and lifestyle fact

Formaldehyde (FA) is an environmental pollutant and an endogenous metabolite produced in cells from central metabolic pathways. It rapidly reacts with electron-rich groups in biomolecules like nucleic acids and proteins, leading to cellular damage. Recent studies have revealed regulatory roles of FA in one-carbon metabolism, and its impact on cellular redox homeostasis and differentiation processes. Additionally, new insights have emerged into the molecular mechanisms underlying the repair of FA-induced DNA-protein and RNA-protein crosslinks. These processes are relevant to human conditions as

Arsenic (As) can cause liver damage and liver cancer and is capable of seriously affecting human health. Therefore, it is important to identify biomarkers of arsenic-induced liver damage. Mitochondria are key targets of hepatotoxicity caused by arsenic. The mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn) is the number of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copies in the genome. mtDNA is vulnerable to exogenous chemical attacks, thus causing mtDNAcn to change after exposure to environmental pollutants. Therefore, mtDNAcn can serve as a potential marker to identify and assess the risk of diseases caused by exposu

Exposure to heavy metals in mining zones is a significant threat, which can affect ecosystem services and contribute to the decline of wild bat populations. The present study investigated the impacts caused by mining on two bat species in central Brazil, the nectarivorous Glossophaga soricina and the frugivorous Carollia perspicillata. The bats were collected from a nickel-mining zone (treatment) and a protected area (control). The leukocyte profile of each species was compiled and genotoxicity (comet assay) and mutagenicity (micronucleus test) were determined using the appropriate procedures.

In peach production, the chilling requirement (CR) of cultivars has emerged as one of the most important limiting factors. DNA methylation plays an important role in regulating plant growth and development, environmental adaptation, and phenotypic establishment. However, the influence of DNA methylation on the CR of peach cultivars remains unclear. This study performed whole-genome methylation sequencing and transcriptome sequencing on two peach cultivars with distinct CRs and conducted an integrated analysis. The results revealed substantial differences between the two cultivars in methylatio

The detection of specific DNA sequences plays an important role in the identification of disease-causing pathogens and genetic diseases, and photochemical water splitting offers a promising avenue to sustainable, environmentally friendly hydrogen production. Cobalt-phosphorus nanowires (CoP NWs) show a high fluorescence quenching ability and different affinity toward single- versus double-stranded DNA. Based on this result, the utilization of CoP NWs as fluorescent DNA nanosensors with a detection limit of 100 pM and a selectivity down to single-base mismatch was demonstrated. The use of a thr

Yeast identification is essential in fields ranging from microbiology and biotechnology to food science and medicine. While DNA barcoding has become the standard for identifying cultured strains, environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding has revolutionised microbial community profiling, providing deeper insights into yeast communities across diverse ecosystems. A major challenge in DNA (meta)barcoding remains the limited availability of high-quality reference sequences, which are critical for accurate species identification and comprehensive taxonomic profiling of both environmental and clinical

The sensitive detection of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is essential for environmental pollution assessment and health risk warning. Although the DNA-based cascade signal amplification strategy can significantly improve the detection sensitivity, non-specific background leakage during amplification remains an unavoidable issue that severely limits the practical performance of sensors. This study developed a co-locked hairpin enabling triple-cascaded signal amplification approach to avoid the non-specific background leakage for ultra-sensitive detection of DBP. Specifically, FeIn2S4/In2O3 heterojunc

Maternal diet can contribute to carcinogenic exposures and also modify effects of environmental exposures on maternal and fetal genetic stability. In this study, associations between maternal diet and the levels of dioxin-like plasma activity, bulky DNA adducts in white blood cells and micronuclei (MN) in lymphocytes from mother to newborns were examined. From 98 pregnant women living in the greater area of Copenhagen, Denmark in 2006-2007, maternal peripheral blood and umbilical cord blood were collected, together with information on health, environmental exposure and lifestyle. Maternal diet

The DNA repair protein xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group D (XPD) is involved in the nucleotide excision repair of DNA lesions induced by many tobacco and environmental carcinogens. In order to study the functional impact of the common polymorphisms in XPD exon 10 (G > A, Asp312Asn) and exon 23 (A > C, Lys751Gln), we have genotyped 185 Swedish lung cancer cases (97 smokers and 88 never-smokers) and 162 matched population controls (83 smokers and 79 never-smokers). Presence of one or two variant alleles was associated with increased risk for lung cancer among never-smokers only, in par

Monitoring fungal bioaerosols is essential for understanding their impacts on human health and crop productivity. However, current monitoring approaches rely on culture-dependent techniques, which underestimate the diversity of fungal exposures. Adhesive-coated films can effectively capture airborne particles but have been regarded as unsuitable for downstream DNA analysis, owing to the lack of standardised DNA extraction methods for the adhesive capture surface. Here, we present an optimised DNA extraction protocol for adhesive film, which we developed and validated to enable direct and cultu
