The morphological findings in 12 cases of Arnold-Chiari and 3 cases of Dandy-Walker malformations are described and compared to those in 2 cases of congenital hydrocephalus of unknown origin, 1 case of isolated meningo-myelocele and 2 cases of normal newborn brains. Lesions common to both types of malformation indicate a same time-related embryogenetic defect of the roofplate of the rhombencephalon, that does not allow the inferior vermis and the choroid plexus to turn inward into the fourth ventricle.

PURPOSE: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a complex hereditary connective tissue disorder infrequently reported in association with epilepsy. Seven patients with ages ranging from 28 to 70 years with EDS and epilepsy are described.
METHODS: Case review of clinical and diagnostic data.
RESULTS: Two patients had occipital horn syndrome (EDS type IX) and partial seizures of probable supplementary motor area origin. Of these two, one had an area of frontal gliosis and was able to abate his seizures by hyperextending his neck; the other had a Dandy Walker malformation and also had pseudoseizures.

In non-Aicardi patients, the male-to-female ratio was 3:2 and X-linked recessive inheritance is postulated to play a role in some cases. Common abnormalities in acallosal patients included: mental retardat …

Background/Objectives: DDX3X syndrome is often misdiagnosed as autism spectrum disorder (ASD, Rett Syndrome, and Dandy-Walker Syndrome). Precise phenotyping is needed with reference to neurodevelopmental diagnosis. Observation of behavior and communication in parents with DDX3X syndrome in the USA, France, and Poland; conversations with the parents of patients; and rudimentary information in evidence-based medical articles prompted us to identify differences in communication, play, and social interaction between children with ASD only, those with both ASD and DDX3X, and those with DDX3X only. …

BACKGROUND: Joubert syndrome is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous ciliopathy. Neuroimaging findings have not been systematically evaluated in a large cohort of patients with Joubert syndrome in correlation with molecular genetic cause and cognitive function.
METHODS: Brain MRI of 110 patients with Joubert syndrome was included in this study. A comprehensive evaluation of brain MRI studies for infratentorial and supratentorial morphological abnormalities was performed. Genetic cause was identified by whole-exome sequencing, and cognitive functions were assessed with age-appropriate ne

PHACE syndrome is a challenging but important prenatal diagnosis due to its protean clinical consequences. The 'tilted telephone receiver' sign (TTRS), consisting of asymmetric cerebellar volume reduction and marked counterclockwise, Dandy-Walker-like upward vermis rotation on prenatal MRI and ultrasound has high specificity for PHACE. Recently, a case report of the prenatal imaging findings in an infant with PHACE described more mild upward vermis rotation and cerebellar clefting. It recommended consideration of expansion of the currently accepted phenotype to improve prenatal detection of th

INTRODUCTION: Dandy-Walker Syndrome (DWS) is a constellation of congenital anomalies of the central nervous system consisting of cerebellar vermis hypoplasia or agenesis, cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle, enlarged posterior fossa, and a high tentorium. Hydrocephalus is a common occurrence in DWS and its treatment varies between shunting-ventriculoperitoneal or cystoperitoneal or both, endoscopic cyst fenestration, and third ventriculostomy. Chronic cerebral herniation is a known complication of treatment in DWS; however, we present an unusual case of central brain herniation.

OBJECTIVE: MRI is increasingly employed to assess intrauterine fetal anomalies. Central nervous system (CNS) anomalies are common structural conditions that warrant evaluation with fetal MRI and subsequent prenatal consultation with a pediatric neurosurgeon. As the use of fetal MRI increases, there is greater impetus to understand the most common CNS structural anomalies diagnosed in utero, as well as their natural histories.
METHODS: The authors performed a single-center retrospective review of fetal MRI evaluations performed between January 2012 and December 2020. Children who underwent bot

We report clinical and radiological features of a patient born with an isolated skull malformation of caput membranaceum and partial bicoronal craniosynostosis with a novel, de novo heterozygous missense variant in ZIC1 [NM_003412.3:c.1183C>G, p.(Pro395Ala)]. Caput membranaceum, or boneless skull, is a rare manifestation of skull ossification defect. It can result from an isolated, enlarged parietal foramina or it can present as part of skeletal dysplasia syndromes associated with poor mineralization such as hypophosphatasia, osteogenesis imperfecta type II, and Saethre-Chotzen syndrome. Ritscher-Schinzel syndrome (RTSCS) is a rare genetic condition characterized by peculiar craniofacial features and cerebellar and cardiovascular malformations. To date, four genes are implicated in this condition. The first two genes described were the autosomal recessive inherited gene WASHC5 associated with Ritscher-Schinzel syndrome 1 (RTSCS1), and CCDC22, an X-linked recessive gene causing Ritscher-Schinzel syndrome 2 (RTSCS2). In recent years, two other genes have been identified: VPS35L (RTSCS3) and DPYSL5 (RTSCS4). Only few patients with a molecular diagnosis of RTSCS have been reported

Meckel-Gruber syndrome type 3 (MKS3; OMIM 607361) is a severe autosomal recessive disorder characterized by bilateral polycystic kidney disease. Other malformations associated with MKS3 include cystic changes in the liver, polydactyly, and brain abnormalities (occipital encephalocele, hydrocephalus, and Dandy Walker-type cerebellar anomalies). The disorder is hypothesized to be caused by defects in primary cilia. In humans, the underlying mutated gene, TMEM67, encodes transmembrane protein 67, also called meckelin (OMIM 609884), which is an integral protein of the renal epithelial cell and mem

Three unrelated infants presented with radiographic punctate calcifications, nasal hypoplasia, and abnormalities of the spine. Additional anomalies included cupped ears in 2 patients and one each with Dandy-Walker malformation with hydrocephaly, congenital cataracts, and peripheral pulmonary artery stenosis. The mothers of these 3 patients had chronic conditions associated with intestinal malabsorption requiring total parenteral nutrition for varying periods of time. The underlying causes of malabsorption were celiac disease, short bowel syndrome secondary to surgical resection, and jejuno-ile

BACKGROUND: Dandy-Walker malformation and Blake pouch cysts can have overlapping imaging features. The choroid plexus and associated taenia-tela choroidea complex are displaced inferolaterally in Dandy-Walker malformation and below the vermis in Blake pouch cysts.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the normal fetal and postnatal MR appearance of the choroid plexus and taenia-tela choroidea complex, and whether their location can help distinguish Dandy-Walker malformation from Blake pouch cysts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, we evaluated brain MR exams from normal-appearing fetuses
