The Use of a Novel 3D Printed Surgical Decompression Device to Induce Healing of Large Periapical Lesions: A Case Report.

AIM: A case report to describe the use of a novel 3D printed surgical decompression device to induce healing of large periapical lesions. SUMMARY: The development of periapical pathology is influenced by a variety of factors including local microbiology and pathophysiology. In large lesions, lone orthograde endodontic treatment is often insufficient in promoting healing of the periapical tissues and therefore is followed by apical surgery to reduce inflammation. While traditional surgical treatments often involve enucleation for cystic lesions, decompression techniques have shown to provide a

Cervical spinal decompression and fusion in the setting of Wolcott-Rallison Syndrome: a rare pediatric indication and its surgical considerations.

Wolcott-Rallison Syndrome is an extremely rare syndrome characterized by infantile non-autoimmune diabetes, extensive skeletal dysplasia, and multi-organ failure requiring transplant. Prognosis is very poor, and as such, surgical intervention for symptomatic cervical spine compromise in pediatric patients has not been widely reported in part due to their high fragility. We report a complex case of Wolcott-Rallison Syndrome that presented with cervical myelopathy due to cervicomedullary compression and the exceptional surgical considerations required for successful intervention.

The selection of a surgical strategy for the treatment of adult degenerative scoliosis with "pear-shaped" decompression under open spinal endoscopy.

The prognoses of patients who undergo open spinal endoscopy (OSE) decompression significantly differ by scoliosis type and symptom despite the use of uniform standards and procedures for the decompression surgery. These differences may be directly related to the selection and formulation of surgical strategies but their cause remains unclear. The aim of this study was to verify and evaluate the efficacy of the "Symptom, Stenosis and Segment classification (SSS classification)" in determining an appropriate surgical strategy and to analyze the differences in the outcomes of different patients a

The anatomic study and surgical technique for canal decompression with "pedicle-plasty" strategy in lumbar burst fractures with pedicle rupture.

In the treatment of lumbar burst fractures with nerve injury, fusion is often required to rebuild spinal stability, but it can lead to the loss of motor units and increase the occurrence of adjacent segment diseases. Thus, a novel approach of lumbar canal decompression with "pedicle-plasty" strategy (DDP) was needed in clincal treatment. Firstly, image measurement analysis, the images of 60 patients with lumbar spine CT examinations were selected to measure osteotomy angle (OA), distance from the intersection of osteotomy plane and skin to the posterior midline (DM),transverse length of the os

Does Segmental Kyphosis Affect Surgical Outcome after a Posterior Decompressive Laminectomy in Multisegmental Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy?

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis. PURPOSE: To compare results of laminectomy in multisegmental compressive cervical myelopathy (CSM) with lordosis versus segmental kyphosis. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Laminectomy is an established procedure for decompression in CSM with cervical lordosis. However in patients with segmental kyphosis, it is associated with risk of progression of kyphosis and poor outcome. Whether this loss of sagittal alignment affects functional outcome is not clear. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 68 patients who underwent laminectomy for CSM from 1998 to 2009. As per

[Is incidence of diplopia after Fat Removal Orbital Decompression a predictive factor of choice of surgical technique for Graves' ophthalmopathy?].

UNLABELLED: Dysthroid orbitopathy or Graves ophthalmopathy is a frequent pathologic condition five times more frequent in females than males. The main symptoms are: proptosis, motility disorders related to eye muscles fibrosis, eyelid retraction, lagophthalmos, and finally the more severe ones: compressive optic neuropathy at the apex of the orbit, and corneal exposure. In order to reduce proptosis the classic approach is Bone Removal Orbital Decompression (BROD) either through eyelid skin, coronal, conjunctival, or endonasal approaches. Recently a new technique has been described by Olivari:

[Surgical treatment of therapy refractory Sudeck's dystrophy by transaxillary decompression of the neurovascular bundle and sympathectomy. On the pathogenesis of Sudeck's disease].

Since 1984, altogether nine cases of otherwise untreatable reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) of the upper extremity were treated by transaxillary decompression of the neurovascular bundle with resection of the upper thoracic ganglia. This resulted in an immediate improvement of the local findings and the entire post-operative course of treatment as well as significantly improved functional results (seven excellent, one good, one fair). Average follow-up was 7.5 years. All patients returned to their original work. Clinical as well as intraoperative studies show that the acute edema of RSD is c

Corticosteroid Injection Versus Surgical Decompression in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Prospective Comparative Interventional Study Using Clinical, Electrophysiological, and Sonographic Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the most common compressive neuropathies. Corticosteroid injection is a pharmacological treatment modality, whereas carpal tunnel release is a surgical treatment option for the management of CTS. Conservative non-pharmacological interventions include wrist splinting, therapeutic exercises, activity modification, ergonomic measures, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. However, the comparative efficacy of corticosteroid injection and surgical decompression remains controversial, particularly when evaluated using objective outcome measure

En bloc resection for primary spinal tumors with huge intrathoracic involvement: a surgical intervention for neurological decompression and oncological control.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional study. OBJECTIVES: Given the aggressive nature of primary spinal tumors, postsurgical local recurrence rates remain high. En bloc resection is currently the preferred treatment. However, the presence of a large thoracic cavity mass increases the surgical difficulty, risk, and likelihood of extensive complications. We report diagnostic and therapeutic characteristics, surgical strategies, and perioperative complications of such tumors treated with en bloc resection. METHODS: We reviewed 25 patients with primary spinal tumors and extensive thoracic c

Influence of body mass index on functional and surgical outcomes in transaxillary thoracic outlet decompression for neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Despite an increase in prevalence of obesity over the last decades, few studies examine the influence of body mass index (BMI) on the outcome of thoracic outlet decompression (TOD) for neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (NTOS). However, it is important to understand the safety and efficacy of this procedure in patients with elevated BMI. This study aimed to determine the influence of BMI on surgical and functional outcomes following transaxillary TOD in patients with NTOS. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of a prospectively collected database with patients who underwen
