[Ticks as a reservoir of Borrelia burgdorferi and Coxiella burnetii on Polish terrain].

The aim of performed studies was to recognize the distribution of Coxiella burnetii and Borrelia burgdorferi infected ticks in Poland. The 1580 ticks infesting animals and humans were collected in different parts of the country. They belonged to Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus and Argas reflexus species. Presence of B burgdorferi and C. burnetii DNA in ticks has been sought with polymerase chain reaction test (PCR). B. burgdorferi bacteria have been detected in 12 I. ricinus ticks (0.77%). Infected ticks were collected in Koszalin, Krosno and Suwałki voivodships. C. burnetii bacteria w…

Mosquito sensitivity to a scorpion neurotoxin expressed using an infectious Sindbis virus vector.

The scorpion, Androctonus australis Hector, produces an insect-specific toxin (AaHIT) encoded by the Scotox gene. To assess the toxicity of AaHIT for mosquitoes, we have taken a novel approach to express the Scotox gene in vivo. We have engineered a double subgenomic Sindbis (dsSIN) virus that contains the Scotox gene in the viral genome and intrathoracically inoculated the virus (TE/3'2J/Scotox) into mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti, Ae. triseriatus and Culex pipiens), houseflies (Musca domestica) and ticks (Dermacentor andersoni). Mosquitoes, which normally show no pathologic effects from Sindbis (…

Ecology of porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) and Colorado tick fever virus in Rocky Mountain National Park, 1975-1977.

The involvement of porcupines, Erethizon dorsatum (L.), in the ecology of Colorado tick fever (CTF) virus in Rocky Mountain National Park was investigated from 1975 to 1977. Porcupine dens and feeding activity were found mostly on rocky knolls or on south-facing slopes within open stands of the montane coniferous forest, and 20 adult porcupines were trapped or captured by hand at those locations. An average of 24.6 +/- 5.4 adult Dermacentor andersoni Stiles ticks were found per animal (annual range, 17.5-31.4 ticks). The minimum CTF virus infection rate of the ticks removed from porcupines var…

[The possible role of the salivary gland substrate in ixodid ticks as an adjuvant enhancing arbovirus transmission].

Using a model: salivary glands of Dermacentor ticks--tick-borne encephalitis virus--guinea pig--D. marginatus ticks, it became possible to confirm the data of Jones et al. (1989) on the role of a substrate of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus glands as a strong enhancer of orthomyxovirus Togoto transmission during subcutaneous administration of a moderate virus dose to virus-resistant guinea pig. A tendency was only noticed towards better infectivity of ticks with the administration of sub- or supraoptimal virus doses together with the adjuvant (salivary gland substrate), as well as enhanced sensit…

[Occurrence of Francicella tularensis subsp. holarctica in haematophagous arthropods in the Breclav district in 2022].

Tularemia is a zoonosis caused by Francisella tularensis, a gram-negative aerobic bacterium belonging to the class of Gammaproteobacteria and the family Francisellaceae. Despite its undeniable importance for human health, there is little data on the current distribution of F. tularensis in various hematophagous arthropods. The aim of this study was to perform a mass molecular screening of different possible hematophagous vectors: ticks (4348 ticks of the species Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus, and Haemaphysalis concinna), mosquitoes (4100 specimens of Aedes vexans), and blackflies (69…

The ecology of Colorado tick fever in Rocky Mountain National Park in 1974. II. Infection in small mammals.

Field studies of Colorado tick fever (CTF) in small mammals in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) in 1974 established that Eutamias minimus and Spermophilus lateralis were the most important hosts for CTF virus and were the source of virus for immature stages of the tick vector, Dermacentor andersoni. Other species (Peromyscus maniculatus, Spermophilus richardsonii, Eutamias umbrinus) are secondary hosts. The intensity of viral activity in rodents varied greatly from locality to locality. Highest rodent infection rates were found to occur in the Moraine Park area of RMNP. Lowest infection rat…

The influence of various factors on fluid secretion by in vitro salivary glands of ixodid Ticks.

1. Salivary glands of the female ixodid tick, Dermacentor andersoni, secrete fluid in vitro when bathed in a slightly modified version of the mammalian tissue culture medium 'TC 199'. 2. Rate of salivation in vitro increases with progression of feeding, but there is no comparable increase in dry weight of the salivary glands during the early phase of engorgement. Engorged ticks secreted at only 25% the rate of 90-250 mg ticks, indicating that salivary gland degeneration has already begun in the very early post-engorgement stage. 3. A salivary gland stimulating factor can be detected in the ner…
