Different mechanisms operating during different critical time-windows reduce rat fetal beta cell mass due to a maternal low-protein or low-energy diet.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Adverse events during intra-uterine life may programme organ growth and favour disease later in life. In animals, protein or energy restriction during gestation alters the development of the endocrine pancreas, even though the duration of malnutrition is different. Here, we evaluate the specific effects of both diets during different periods of gestation and the mechanisms underlying the decreased beta cell mass. METHODS: Pregnant Wistar rats were fed either a low-protein or a low-energy diet during the last week of gestation or throughout gestation. Fetuses and their pancrea

Effects of DL-Methionine or Methionine Hydroxy Analogue-Free Acid Supplementation on Growth Performance and Carcass Yield of Broilers Fed Reduced Energy Diets with Guanidinoacetic Acid Supplementation.

Guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) and methionine are two biologically active compounds related to cell energy metabolism. Both are metabolically linked, as the methyl group needed to transform GAA into creatine derives from S-adenonsylmethionine out of the homocysteine cycle. A broiler feeding study was conducted to evaluate potential interactions between 600 g/t supplemental GAA and feed additives with methionine activity. The experimental design comprised two parts. Part one consisted of three dietary treatments in which DL-methionine (DL-Met) was added to meet sulfur amino acid recommendations (1)

Intestinal Acyl-CoA synthetase 5 (ACSL5) deficiency potentiates postprandial GLP-1 & PYY secretion, reduces food intake, and protects against diet-induced obesity.

OBJECTIVE: In the small intestine, the products of digestion of dietary triacylglycerol (TAG), fatty acids (FA) and monoacylglycerol, are taken up by absorptive cells, enterocytes, for systemic energy delivery. These digestion products can also bind receptors on endocrine cells to stimulate the release of hormones capable of influencing systemic energy metabolism. The initial phase of intestinal FA absorption involves the acylation of FAs to acyl-CoA by the acyl-CoA long chain synthetase (ACSL) enzymes. ACSL5 is abundantly expressed in the small intestinal epithelium where it is the major ACSL

Magnesium chloride supplementation reduces risk of gestational diabetes by improving glucose levels and controlling body weight gain in diet-induced obese, hypomagnesaemic rats: a pilot study.

The role of magnesium supplementation in reducing the risk of gestational diabetes (GD) has not been elucidated. To evaluate the effect of magnesium chloride (MgCl2) on the risk of developing GD in a model of obese rats with hydrochlorothiazide-induced hypomagnesemia. Female Wistar rats were allocated into a healthy control or obese group. Obesity was induced with an obesogenic diet and defined by a body weight 30% higher than that of the healthy control group. Once obesity was induced and before pregnancy, hypomagnesemia was generated using hydrochlorothiazide (5 mg/kg body weight). Subsequen

Black garlic melanoidins prevent obesity, reduce serum LPS levels and modulate the gut microbiota composition in high-fat diet-induced obese C57BL/6J mice.

The objective of this study is to assess the potential anti-obesity effects of black garlic melanoidins (MLDs) and gut microbiota changes in an animal model, hypothesizing that the effects of oral administration of MLDs can be partially mediated by the modulation of intestinal microbiota via inhibiting the formation of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and promoting the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). The effects of MLDs in C57BL/6J mice with high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity were investigated for 12 weeks with low (50 mg kg-1 day-1), medium (100 mg kg-1 day-1) and high (200 mg kg-1 d

[Nutritional diet therapy in the management of the patient with Chronic Kidney Disease in advanced phase to delay the beginning and reduce the frequency of dialysis. An option also in the pre-emptive transplant program].

The Italian nephrology has a long tradition and experience in the field of dietetic-nutritional therapy (DNT), which is an important component in the conservative management of the patient suffering from a chronic kidney disease, which precedes and integrates the pharmacological therapies. The objectives of DNT include the maintenance of an optimal nutritional status, the prevention and / or correction of signs, symptoms and complications of chronic renal failure and, possibly, the delay in starting of dialysis. The DNT includes modulation of protein intake, adequacy of caloric intake, control

Conjugated linoleic Acid supplementation during pregnancy and lactation reduces maternal high-fat-diet-induced programming of early-onset puberty and hyperlipidemia in female rat offspring.

A maternal high-fat (HF) diet during pregnancy and lactation can result in adverse metabolic and reproductive outcomes in female offspring independent of postnatal diet. Interventions during critical windows of developmental plasticity may prevent developmental programming in offspring. The effects of maternal supplementation with the anti-inflammatory lipid conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on early-onset puberty, metabolic dysfunction, and estrous cycle dysfunction was assessed. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to a purified control diet (CD; 10% kcal from fat), CD with CLA (CLA; 10%

Growth, not digestibility, in chickens receiving reduced-protein diets is independent of non-specific amino-nitrogen sources when the essential-to-total-nitrogen ratio is constant and lower than 50.

1. A 21 d experiment was conducted to investigate whether growth performance and coefficients of amino acids digestibility (cAID) in broilers receiving reduced-protein diets supplemented with different non-essential amino acids (NEAA) were dependent on supplemented NEAA in diets with the same essential-to-total N (eN-to-tN) ratio kept at <50%.2. The experiment used 240 male broiler chicks, allocated to eight treatments with six replicate pens per treatment, and five chicks per replicate. The diets were either adequate in protein diet (PC), reduced protein (NC) diet or the NC diet supplemented

Reduced Serum Cholesterol and Triglyceride Levels in a Choline-Deficient L-Amino Acid-Defined High-Fat Diet (CDAHFD)-Induced Mouse Model of Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH).

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or non-alcoholic seatohepatitis (NASH) is one of the major health problems world wide, because of increased abdominal obesity. To date, specific and effective medications to treat or prevent NAFLD/NASH have not been established. To identify appropriate molecular targets for that purpose, suitable animal models of NAFLD/NASH have been explored. A choline-deficient amino acid-defined high fat diet (CDAHFD)-induced mouse model of NASH has been developed. However, its relevance to human NASH, including serum lipid profiles, have not been clearly defined. I

Cow's milk polar lipids reduce atherogenic lipoprotein cholesterol, modulate gut microbiota and attenuate atherosclerosis development in LDL-receptor knockout mice fed a Western-type diet.

Milk sphingomyelin (SM), a polar lipid (PL) component of milk fat globule membranes, is protective against dyslipidemia. However, it is unclear whether ingestion of milk PLs protect against atherosclerosis. To determine this, male LDLr-/- mice (age 6 weeks) were fed ad libitum either a high-fat, added-cholesterol diet (CTL; 45% kcal from fat, 0.2% cholesterol by weight; n=15) or the same diet supplemented with 1% milk PL (1% MPL; n=15) or 2% milk PL (2% MPL; n=15) added by weight from butter serum. After 14 weeks on diets, mice fed 2% MPL had significantly lower serum cholesterol (-51%) compar
