Identification of stress from incremental dentine stable isotope trends using linear enamel hypoplasia.

High-precision sampling of dentine serial increments facilitates analysis of short-term variations in stable isotope ratios. Temporal resolution of micro-sampled increments is sufficiently high that the impact of short-term periods of physiological stress, which have well-described effects on stable isotope ratios, may be captured. However, distinguishing the effects of diet vs physiological effects on δ13C and δ15N is non-trivial. This study presents a comparative analysis of one manifestation of physiological stress, linear enamel hypoplasia (LEH), and incrementally sampled dentine stable is

Oral microbiota of patients with phenylketonuria: A nation-based cross-sectional study.

AIM: The oral microenvironment contributes to microbial composition and immune equilibrium. It is considered to be influenced by dietary habits. Phenylketonuria (PKU) patients, who follow a lifelong low-protein diet, exhibit higher prevalence of oral diseases such as periodontitis, offering a suitable model to explore the interplay between diet, oral microbiota and oral health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted 16S rDNA sequencing on saliva and subgingival plaque from 109 PKU patients (ages 6-68 years) and 114 age-matched controls and correlated oral microbial composition and dental health.

Sperm production, gonadal oxidative stress, DNA damage biomarkers and reproductive hormonal responses of cocks fed AFB1-contaminated diets supplemented with wireweed leaf.

To assess the ameliorative effects of wireweed leaf supplement (WLS) and ascorbate on reproductive potentials and gonadal oxidative status of cocks fed aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) contaminated diets, a total of 250 sexually mature cocks were distributed into five treatment groups: 1 (Control/Basal diet), 2 (Basal + 1 mg/kg AFB1), 3 (Basal + 1 mg/kg AFB1 + 200 mg/kg Ascorbate), 4 (Basal + 1 mg/kg AFB1 + 2.50 g/kg WLS) and 5 (Basal + 1 mg/kg AFB1 + 5.00 g/kg WLS). Each group was replicated 5 times with 10 cocks per replicate. The cocks in group 2 recorded significantly (P < 0.05) reduced daily sperm pro

Short-term consumption of highly processed diets varying in macronutrient content impair the sense of smell and brain metabolism in mice.

OBJECTIVE: Food processing greatly contributed to increased food safety, diversity, and accessibility. However, the prevalence of highly palatable and highly processed food in our modern diet has exacerbated obesity rates and contributed to a global health crisis. While accumulating evidence suggests that chronic consumption of such foods is detrimental to sensory and neural physiology, it is unclear whether its short-term intake has adverse effects. Here, we assessed how short-term consumption (<2 months) of three diets varying in composition and macronutrient content influence olfaction and

The effects of high-oleic peanuts as an alternate feed ingredient on performance, ileal digestibility, apparent metabolizable energy, and histology of the small intestine in laying hens.

We aimed to determine the effects of feeding a high-oleic peanut (HOPN) diet to egg-producing laying hens on egg quality, digestibility, and feed conversion. Three isonitrogenous and isocaloric dietary treatments were formulated with 1) Control diet (CON)-a corn-soybean meal conventional diet with 7.8 % added poultry fat, 2) HOPN diet-dietary inclusion of ~20% coarse-ground whole HOPN, and 3) oleic acid (CON-OA) diet-a control diet supplemented with 2.6% oleic fatty acid oil. Ninety-nine 57-wk-old brown Leghorn laying hens were randomly assigned to 33 animals per treatment. Animals were housed

Nutritional Prognosis of Patients Submitted to Radiotherapy and Its Implications in Treatment.

Oncological patients show intense catabolic activity, as well as a susceptibility to higher nutritional risk and clinical complications. Thus, tools are used for monitoring prognosis. Our objective was to analyze the nutrition prognosis of patients who underwent radiotherapy, correlating it with outcomes and complications. We performed a retrospective transversal study based on secondary data from hospital records of patients who started radiotherapy between July 2022 and July 2023. We established Prognostic Scores through a combination of Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) and a Subjective Gl

Celiac disease and chronic liver disease: is there a relationship?

Celiac disease is a multisystem disease, and the liver is affected in a subset of patients. We herein present a case series of 25 patients with celiac disease who had evidence of cirrhosis of the liver. We retrospectively reviewed the case records of patients with celiac disease having concomitant cirrhosis. The diagnosis of celiac disease was made on the basis of the modified European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition criteria. Of 25 patients (nine males; mean age 28.8 ± 16.6 years) with celiac disease and cirrhosis, 17 patients presented predominantly with cirr

Dietary Interventions and Testosterone Levels in Obese Men: A Systematic Review Comparing the Mediterranean Diet, Ketogenic Diet, and Intermittent Fasting.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Male obesity secondary hypogonadism (MOSH) is a highly prevalent condition characterised by reduced testosterone levels in obese men, driven by increased aromatase activity, reduced SHBG, insulin resistance, and HPG axis suppression. Dietary interventions represent a cornerstone of non-pharmacological management; however, the comparative efficacy of different dietary patterns on testosterone restoration remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Comprehensive searches were performed in SciSpace, Google Scholar

Bone mineral content and dietary calcium intake in children prescribed a low-lactose diet.

Bone density is related to body size and other factors including dietary calcium intake. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a low-lactose, low-calcium diet on the bone mineral content (BMC) of prepubertal children with documented lactose intolerance. Radial BMC was determined by single-photon absorptiometry. Dietary intake was assessed by 24-h recall and two 3-day food records, and weight and height were measured. The group of lactose-intolerant children was compared with a group of healthy children of similar age, gender, race, and size and to the prediction equations ba

Nutritional inadequacies in patients with stable heart failure.

Sodium restriction is the primary nutritional strategy in heart failure; however, other diet-related concerns may also occur. We characterized dietary intake among stable patients with heart failure and a non-heart-failure cardiac control group to quantify and determine prevalence of inadequate micronutrient intake. Two 3-day food records were completed by 123 patients with heart failure and 58 controls. A subset of each group provided two 24-hour urine collections. Mean intake of sodium (2,540+/-1,122 vs 2,596+/-1,184 mg/day) and potassium (3,190+/-980 vs 3,114+/-828 mg/day) was similar betwe

Influence of dietary components on the gut microbiota of middle-aged adults: the gut-Mediterranean connection.

BACKGROUND: A plant-focused, healthy dietary pattern, such as the Mediterranean diet enriched with dietary fiber, polyphenols, and polyunsaturated fats, is well known to positively influence the gut microbiota. Conversely, a processed diet high in saturated fats and sugars negatively impacts gut diversity, potentially leading to weight gain, insulin resistance, and chronic, low-grade inflammation. Despite this understanding, the mechanisms by which the Mediterranean diet impacts the gut microbiota and its associated health benefits remain unclear. METHODS: This retrospective, observational st

Influence of dietary composition on gastric emptying and motility in dogs: potential involvement in acute gastric dilatation.

Gastric dilatation-volvulus is a dramatic and life-threatening disease of large-breed dogs. The cause is unknown, but ingestion of dry cereal-based food is frequently incriminated as a predisposing factor. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of commercial diets on gastric motility and emptying in the dog. Four large-breed dogs were fed 3 different diets (diet A = canned meat-based; B = cereal-based with 77% added water; and C = dry cereal-based) in a randomized block design. Each experiment was done in triplicate. Motility was assessed, using 5 AgAgCl electrodes and 2 strain ga
