Lost in the chaos: Flawed literature should not generate new disorders.

The paper by Kuss, Griffiths, and Pontes (2016) titled "Chaos and confusion in DSM-5 diagnosis of Internet Gaming Disorder: Issues, concerns, and recommendations for clarity in the field" examines issues relating to the concept of Internet Gaming Disorder. We agree that there are serious issues and extend their arguments by suggesting that the field lacks basic theory, definitions, patient research, and properly validated and standardized assessment tools. As most studies derive data from survey research in functional populations, they exclude people with severe functional impairment and provi

[Kleptomania and compulsive buying].

Kleptomania and compulsive buying are important clinical problems. However there is no established treatment for these problems in Japan yet. In this article, we review the available clinical treatments for kleptomania and compulsive buying in Japan. Kleptomania and compulsive buying can be explained by the conditioning theory. These behaviors are reinforced by positive consequences. In particular, the problem behaviors of kleptomania arise because of arousal and tension and are reinforced by the relaxed feeling that follows. Therefore, kleptomania is treated by systematic desensitization. How

Kleptomania: clinical characteristics and relationship to substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Although categorized as an impulse control disorder, kleptomania has many features in common with substance use disorders. OBJECTIVES: This paper sought to examine the mounting evidence supporting the phenomenological, clinical, epidemiological, and biological links between kleptomania and substance addictions. METHODS: A review of the literature examining family history, genetics, comorbid psychiatric conditions, neuroimaging, and phenomenology was utilized to examine the relationship of kleptomania to substance addiction. RESULTS: Kleptomania and substance addiction share comm

Are ADHD symptoms associated with delay aversion or choice impulsivity? A general population study.

OBJECTIVE: The term delay aversion has been used both to describe a behavioral tendency of greater preference for smaller-immediate over larger-delayed rewards (choice impulsivity) and to refer to a secondary explanatory construct put forward by delay aversion theory. In this study, we examined the association of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms with choice impulsivity and tested the specific hypothesis derived from delay aversion theory. METHOD: A total of 1,062 children aged 7.90 to 10.90 years (49% girls) made a fixed number of repeated choices between a smaller rew

Time-estimation error following Weber-Fechner law may explain subadditive time-discounting.

Impulsivity in drug addicts have been associated with impatience in intertemporal choice, i.e., high degrees to which delayed rewards are discounted, indicating the importance of reducing the degree of discounting in drug addicts. Intertemporal choice (delay discounting) has been attracting attention in neuropsychopharmacology and behavioral neuroeconomics. Recently, behavioral economists have reported that impatience/impulsivity in intertemporal choice is increased if a delay period is presented as a sum of divided time-blocks, which is referred to as subadditive discounting (i.e., "total pat

Treating problem gamblers: working towards empirically supported treatment.

There is an urgent need for mental health professionals to develop effective treatments for pathological gambling. A scientific meeting was held in Quebec City in June 2002 where 13 specialists in the treatment of gamblers pursued the objectives of making the "State of the art" statement concerning the procedures and the methodology to be used in future treatment outcome studies. This paper introduces this special issue of the Journal of Gambling Studies and identifies some of the key issues that confront clinicians and researchers interested in evidence based treatment for gambling related di

Patterns of co-morbidity in male suicide completers.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric co-morbidity is thought to be an important problem in suicide, but it has been little investigated. This study aims to investigate patterns of co-morbidity in a group of male suicide completers. METHOD: One hundred and fifteen male suicide completers from the Greater Montreal Area and 82 matched community controls were assessed using proxy-based diagnostic interviews. Patterns of co-morbidity were investigated using latent class analysis. RESULTS: Three subgroups of male suicide completers were identified (L2 = 171.62, df = 2012, P < 0.05). they differed significantly

Attention deficit disorder and pathological gambling.

To examine the possibility that pathological gambling is related to the deficits in impulse control associated with attention deficit disorder, 14 pathological gamblers and 16 controls were administered questionnaires concerning their childhood behaviors. These self-reports indicated a strong correlation between pathological gambling and childhood behaviors related to attention deficit disorder.

Pharmacologic Management of Skin-Picking Disorder: An Updated Review.

INTRODUCTION: Skin-picking disorder (SPD), defined as a psychocutaneous condition that involves excessive picking at the skin causing marked impairment in quality of life, is commonly seen in both dermatology and psychiatry. As such, therapeutic intervention-both nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic-is essential. Given the rising prevalence of SPD and the tremendous impact it can have on quality of life, an updated review, specifically on pharmacologic options, is very much needed. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this scoping review is to provide a detailed compilation of updated pharmacologic treatments

Expert appraisal of criteria for assessing gaming disorder: an international Delphi study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Following the recognition of 'internet gaming disorder' (IGD) as a condition requiring further study by the DSM-5, 'gaming disorder' (GD) was officially included as a diagnostic entity by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). However, the proposed diagnostic criteria for gaming disorder remain the subject of debate, and there has been no systematic attempt to integrate the views of different groups of experts. To achieve a more systematic agreement on this new disorder, this study employed the Del

Dopamine dysregulation syndrome induced by proxy.

Dopamine dysregulation syndrome is a rare complication of Parkinson's disease (PD) treatment. We present a 70-year-old woman with a long-standing PD and a clinical picture compatible with dopaminergic dysregulation, which was ultimately revealed to be induced by her companion. Patient's exuberant choreiform dyskinesia led to a potential financial advantage when performed outside the hospital but excessive dopamine intake also occurred during hospital admission, without any obvious reward for the abuser. Even in cases where there is no place for a definitive diagnosis, deceptive behaviours must

[Gambling and Gaming disorders and physical health of players: A critical review of the literature].

CONTEXT: Gambling and gaming disorders have been introduced as addictions in the DSM-5 and have been announced for the next edition of the ICD. Links between gambling and gaming and psychiatric comorbidities have been thoroughly investigated, but so far the impact of gambling and gaming on physical health has been overlooked. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate the impact of gaming and gambling disorders on the physical health of gamers and gamblers. SOURCES: We conducted a systematic review of the literature, using PubMed/Medline to retrieve studies with the following: keywords: "gambling" ;

Interaction Between Neuropsychiatric Symptoms and Cognitive Performance in Parkinson's Disease: What Do Clinical and Neuroimaging Studies Tell Us?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Parkinson's disease was studied for a long time from the prism of a motor impairment. Recent advances have outlined the importance of cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in the PD equation. This review concentrates on the present possibilities of using neuroimaging techniques in order to quantify the cognitive performance and NPS in PD patients. RECENT FINDINGS: Mild cognitive impairment as well as many NPS have been acknowledged as important criteria for assessing the quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease and have been shown as potential factors in

The efficacy of biofeedback approaches for obsessive-compulsive and related disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Biofeedback is applied to target excessive and/or deficient physiological signals to help patients identifying and self-managing their symptoms. Biofeedback has been employed in psychiatric disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), mainly by using neural signals - neurofeedback. Recently, OCD has been integrated into the obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCD&RD) category (body dysmorphic, hoarding, trichotillomania/hair-pulling, and excoriation/skin-picking disorders). The efficacy of biofeedback for OCD&RD is still unknown. Our work provides a complete overview of pu

The functional anatomy of impulse control disorders.

Impulsive-compulsive disorders such as pathological gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive eating, and shopping are side effects of the dopaminergic therapy for Parkinson's disease. With a lower prevalence, these disorders also appear in the general population. Research in the last few years has discovered that these pathological behaviors share features similar to those of substance use disorders (SUD), which has led to the term "behavioral addictions". As in SUDs, the behaviors are marked by a compulsive drive toward and impaired control over the behavior. Furthermore, animal and medication st

Impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease: the role of personality and cognitive status.

This study reviews empirical findings on two debated issues related to the phenomenon of impulse control disorders (ICD) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) treated with dopamine agonists: the role of "premorbid" or "baseline" personality traits and the role of cognitive status. A review of both these issues may help clinicians to understand why only some PD patients, when treated with dopamine agonists, develop an ICD: besides the treatment, which other neuropsychiatric characteristics represent a risk factor to develop an ICD? A literature review was performed on studies of ICD in PD p

Genomic architecture of aggression: rare copy number variants in intermittent explosive disorder.

Copy number variants (CNVs) are known to be associated with complex neuropsychiatric disorders (e.g., schizophrenia and autism) but have not been explored in the isolated features of aggressive behaviors such as intermittent explosive disorder (IED). IED is characterized by recurrent episodes of aggression in which individuals act impulsively and grossly out of proportion from the involved stressors. Previous studies have identified genetic variants in the serotonergic pathway that play a role in susceptibility to this behavior, but additional contributors have not been identified. Therefore,
