Three studies that describe antipyretic bioassay are detailed. Reference Standard Endotoxin (RSE) was used to induce fever in healthy male volunteers under randomized, single-dose, double-blind, parallel, and standard drug-control conditions. Thirty minutes before administering RSE, the subjects were medicated with test drug, and oral temperatures were recorded every 15 minutes for 6 to 8 hours. Two NSAIDs and a centrally acting analgesic were evaluated. Both doses of a propionic derivative, three high doses of tebufelone (a new NSAID), as well as the high dose of flupirtine effectively obtund

Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii are causative agents of coccidioidomycosis, commonly known as Valley Fever. The increasing Valley Fever cases in the past decades, the expansion of endemic regions, and the rising azole drug-resistant strains have underscored an urgent need for a better understanding of Coccidioides biology and new antifungal strategies. Transporters play essential roles in pathogen survival, growth, infection, and adaptation, and are considered as potential drug targets. However, the composition and roles of transport machinery in Coccidioides remain largely unk

Fifty-eight clinical Salmonella typhi strains isolated from patients suspected of suffering from typhoid fever were obtained at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, both located in Ghana, Africa. Each isolate was examined for susceptibility to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, tetracycline, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole by the disk diffusion assay. Five of the isolates were resistant to all five antibiotics while 10 isolates were resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, which are considered 'fir

We examined the patterns of infection in 41 consecutive patients with idiosyncratic drug-induced agranulocytosis observed during the past 15 years. All patients were nursed in reverse isolation and treated prophylactically with oral antimicrobials and antifungal compounds. Nine of 41 patients remained without fever and did not need any parenteral antibiotic treatment for full recovery. The other 32 patients developed fever during the period of agranulocytosis and were treated with empirical antimicrobial therapy. Febrile episodes were documented microbiologically in 16 patients (eight with and

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a genetic disorder characterized by acute episodes of fever with some combination of severe abdominal pain, pleurisy, arthritis, and skin rash. The case of a patient with recurrent urticaria referred for study of drug allergy is presented. After allergy had been ruled out, the urticaria was attributed to previously undiagnosed symptoms of an underlying systemic disease: FME. Urticaria is the least frequent cutaneous manifestation of this disease, and genetic analysis was required to confirm the diagnosis.

We have reported a patient who had had renal transplantation for end-stage renal disease; she was treated for fever and presumed sepsis with intravenous tobramycin and vancomycin, with subsequent development of persistent fever, eosinophilia, and a maculopapular rash that progressed to linear bullae. Findings on skin biopsy were consistent with a diagnosis of toxic epidermal necrolysis. Sustained measurable serum concentrations of vancomycin, the temporal response to drug exposure, and the response to steroid therapy suggest vancomycin as the causative agent.

PURPOSE: We previously developed evaluation methods using micro-segmental analysis (MSA) to examine the effects of external environments on drug content in hair and nails. In this study, the effects of the natural environmental factors (water, temperature, humidity, light, and soil) on drug contents in nails were examined and compared with our previous experimental data on hair.
METHODS: Four hay-fever medicines were used as model drugs (fexofenadine, epinastine, cetirizine, and desloratadine) to evaluate drug stability in the nails. Reference nails containing the four medicines were collecte

We report a 3-month-old girl who presented with high-grade fever for 3 days. Her initial physical examination was normal. Investigation showed abnormal white cells in her urine. She was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection and received an antibiotic for 1 day. After that, she developed a generalised maculopapular rash over her body. An adverse drug reaction from the antibiotic was suspected, and the patient was referred to our hospital. On admission, she still had fever and was irritable. She was diagnosed with sepsis and given another broad-spectrum antibiotic for 2 days. However, her fev

Patients with rheumatic diseases are more susceptible to infection, due to the underlying disease itself or to its treatment. The rheumatologist should prevent infections in those patients, vaccination being one preventive measure to be adopted. Yellow fever is one of such infectious diseases that can be avoided. The yellow fever vaccine is safe and effective for the general population, but, being an attenuated live virus vaccine, it should be avoided whenever possible in rheumatic patients on immunosuppressive drugs. Considering that yellow fever is endemic in a large area of Brazil, and that

A teenage girl presented with fever after aspirin use. Examination revealed no organ-specific symptoms. The serum creatinine level and urine analysis findings were normal. The drug lymphocyte stimulation test was positive for aspirin. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) revealed hyperintensity in both kidneys although serum creatinine was only mildly elevated. A subsequent kidney biopsy confirmed acute interstitial nephritis (AIN). She later developed uveitis and the final diagnosis was tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis (TINU) syndrome, possibly triggered by aspirin,

We encountered 2 cases of drug-induced intrathoracic lesions caused by allergic reactions to mesalazine in patients with ulcerative colitis. Case 1: A 26-year-old man had a fever, cough and exertional dyspnea after 1 month of mesalazine treatment. He was hospitalized because of bilateral pulmonary infiltrates on a chest X-ray film. Case 2: A 27-year-old woman complained of fever and left back pain that exacerbated after 2 weeks of mesalazine treatment. She was hospitalized because of bilateral pulmonary effusions on chest CT. Both patients showed a positive reaction to a drug lymphocyte stimul

Ribavirin was evaluated as a potential therapeutic for Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF). Viral yields for strains of CCHF virus from Europe, Asia, and Africa in African green monkey kidney (Vero) cells were markedly reduced by this drug. Some CCHF viral strains appeared more sensitive than others, but in general, ribavirin doses as low as 5 micrograms/ml caused a transient reduction of viral yields. A further reduction in viral yields was induced by a dose of 25 micrograms/ml, and evidence of viral replication was not demonstrated in cells treated with 50 or 250 micrograms/ml. In contras

Mycoplasmal pneumonia, tularemic pneumonia, Q fever pneumonia, psittacosis, and Legionnaires' disease are the most frequently encountered treatable atypical pneumonias. Mycoplasmal pneumonia, the most common, is often accompanied by nonexudative pharyngitis, conjunctivitis, or otitis. The nonproductive cough is characteristic. Tularemic pneumonia is characterized by substernal chest pain, bloody pleural effusion, and bilateral hilar adenopathy. Although the clinical presentation is mild, roentgenographic findings are impressive. Q fever pneumonia resembles psittacosis but is less serious; it m

Typhoid fever is a major cause of illness and mortality in low- and middle-income settings. We investigated the association of typhoid fever and rainfall in Blantyre, Malawi, where multi-drug-resistant typhoid has been transmitting since 2011. Peak rainfall preceded the peak in typhoid fever by approximately 15 weeks [95% confidence interval (CI) 13.3, 17.7], indicating no direct biological link. A quasi-Poisson generalised linear modelling framework was used to explore the relationship between rainfall and typhoid incidence at biologically plausible lags of 1-4 weeks. We found a protective ef

OBJECTIVE: To describe characteristics and outcomes for patients hospitalized with fever, not only patients with fever of unknown origin (FUO).
METHODS: Medical records were reviewed for 226 consecutive patients hospitalized in a Japanese referral hospital with fever as one of the clinical problems.
RESULTS: Although the majority of illnesses involved some sort of infection (54%), noninfectious inflammatory diseases, particularly adult Still's disease (n=6) and primary vasculitis syndromes (n=5) including 3 cases of Behçet's disease, represented the leading cause in patients who met the defi

For centuries, yellow fever virus infection generated substantial fear among explorers, tourist travellers, workers, military personnel, and others entering areas of transmission. Currently, there is transmission only in some areas of tropical South America and sub-Saharan Africa. When symptomatic, yellow fever infection causes severe liver dysfunction and coagulopathy with elevated mortality rates. Since there is no effective treatment, vaccination against yellow fever, available since 1937, represents an important preventive intervention in endemic areas. Every year, an increasing number of

Numerous factors affect the response to vitamin K antagonists (VKA) including age, dietary vitamin K, other drugs, pharmacogenetics, and disease states. In antithrombotic guidelines, fever is mentioned as a factor that may increase response to VKA. The purpose of this article is to review the available evidence regarding the effect of fever on response to VKA, and to discuss possible mechanisms of this effect. We performed a search of the English literature from 1943 to June 2014, using the key words fever AND warfarin, acenocoumarol, phenprocoumon, coumarin anticoagulants and VKA; fever AND v

A 74-year-old woman was diagnosed with invasive breast ductal carcinoma, cT2N0M1 (PUL), stage Ⅳ, and treated with abemaciclib and letrozole. The day after drug administration, the patient developed a fever of 38℃ and dyspnea upon exertion, and was diagnosed with drug-induced pneumonia. Steroid pulse therapy was administered during hospitalization, and the patient was discharged after the dose of prednisolone was gradually reduced. This case shows that, when abemaciclib is administered, drug-induced lung injury can occur within 1 week.

A case reported here of Haloperidol-induced neutropenia demonstrates one of many important drug reactions to which the elderly may be predisposed. Neuroleptics can lead to neutropenia by toxic or immunologic mechanisms, and it is impossible to predict which patients will sustain this potentially life-threatening reaction. Fever and infection may be the only clue to this blood dyscrasias. The diagnosis of drug-induced neutropenia is largely one of exclusion coupled with the observation of increasing neutrophil counts after cessation of the drug.

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a significant transboundary virus that continues to spread outside Africa in Europe and most recently to China, Vietnam and Cambodia. Pigs infected with highly virulent ASFV develop a hemorrhagic fever like illness with high lethality reaching up to 100%. There are no vaccines or antiviral drugs available for the prevention or treatment of ASFV infections. We here review molecules that have been reported to inhibit ASFV replication, either as direct-acting antivirals or host-targeting drugs as well as those that act via a yet unknown mechanism. Prospects for
