The wrestler's ear (acute auricular hematoma) is a common problem for physicians treating facial trauma. One method of treatment involves open drainage of the serum and excision of the newly formed fibroneocartilage. This technique provides an outstanding cosmetic result and allows the athlete continued wrestling competition.

The unique shape of the external ear depends on the underlying cartilaginous framework. Injuries of the external ear are common. In dealing with lacerations, subperichondrial hematomas, perichondritis, burns and frostbite, particular care should be taken to maintain the cartilaginous framework and to prevent infection. In this way cosmetic deformities of the external ear can be prevented.

OBJECTIVE: Because of its rigid quality, cartilage is the grafting material of choice in advanced pathologies, such as adhesive processes or recurrent perforations. However, the use of such a rigid material in tympanic membrane reconstruction causes controversies as to the audiologic aspect. The purpose of this study was to assess overall and frequency-specific hearing results after primary cartilage tympanoplasty with island technique in comparison to the hearing results after primary tympanoplasty with temporalis muscle fascia.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: This study was a retrospective review

Microtia reconstructive surgery is usually a multi-stage repair procedure that involves the use of cartilage and skin grafts. Complications can arise at both ear reconstruction sites and cartilage donor sites. In particular, pneumothorax, atelectasis, chest scars, and chest deformities are known to be associated with the harvesting of costal cartilage. However, delayed pleural effusion can also develop. Our patient complained of a cough and chest pain at 5 days postoperatively, and pleural effusion was detected by chest radiography. However, thoracentesis was not performed and the effusion res

The unique appearance of Scottish Fold cats is caused by a single gene variant in TRPV4, which impacts the development of cartilage. This results in the ears folding forward and variable effects on articular cartilage and bone. While some find this appearance desirable, early work demonstrated that homozygous cats with two copies of this variant develop severe radiographic consequences. Subsequent breeding programs have mated heterozygous cats with straight-eared cats to ensure an equal mix of heterozygous (fold) and wild-type (nonfolded) offspring, in the hope of raising healthy cats. AIMS: In this article, we would like to present our experience in total ear reconstruction for microtic ear patients.
BACKGROUND: Partial and total ear reconstruction is one of the most challenging reconstruction procedures in plastic surgery. Ear reconstruction is performed in cases of congenital malformations such as anotia or microtia. In addition, the reconstruction can be performed in a variety of other acquired malformation such as burns, trauma or after skin tumor removal.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed. Microtic ear patients who underwent operations between 2000 and 201

There is a current effort to perform myringoplasty for tympanic membrane perforations as a day-stay procedure. In 1998, an inlay myringoplasty using tragal cartilage/perichondrium was described. A retrospective study was performed by the author to analyse the results of inlay cartilage myringoplasty, in terms of closure of simple perforations of the tympanic membrane. The results of a control group of previous cases of underlay temporalis fascia myringoplasty were retrieved from the hospital records. All the operations in both groups were performed by the same author at the same institution. T

Chronic relapsing polychondritis is a rare connective tissue disease of presumed autoimmunologic pathogenesis. It may involve multiple organ systems. The most characteristic signs are: relapsing inflammation of the cartilage of the outer ear, non-erosive polyarthritis, chondritis of the nasal cartilage, inflammation of different ocular tissues, inflammation of tracheal and bronchial cartilages and lesions of the inner ear. The wide range of ocular tissue involvement is discussed on the basis of two new cases with emphasis on scleritis, episcleritis, keratitis and chorioretinal involvement. Ocu

The following guidelines are suggested for the use of tissue expansion in ear reconstruction based on both personal experience and my evaluation of the reported results of expansion in the hands of other surgeons experienced in ear reconstruction: 1) Cases should be carefully selected to avoid those with excess scarring from previous surgery or trauma as well as avoid the other common contraindications to the use of tissue expansion. 2) In most congenital cases the expander should be placed through a remote incision within the postauricular hairline, and excision of the cartilage vestige delay

CONCLUSIONS: The use of the 3D template model in microtia surgery leads to satisfactory results, for its contribution to the engraving and localization of the microtia auricle in auricle reconstruction.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to create an anatomical correct 3D rapid prototyping model for patients with microtia, to assist with the accurate fabrication and localization of a coastal cartilage framework for auricular reconstruction, and patients, who had undergone rib-cartilage reconstruction to treat a congenital auricular defect, were evaluated for aesthetic outcomes following ear

Ear reconstruction with autologous rib cartilage is performed in stages. Restitution of blood flow between the separate stages is crucial to obtain a good result. Laser Doppler perfusion imaging (LDPI) and local temperature were measured in reconstructed and normal ears in response to indirect heating. Ten persons who had had a unilateral ear reconstruction were included in the study. At a minimum, 157 days had passed since the last operation. LDPI showed no difference in blood flow between the reconstructed ear and the normal ear, neither before nor after indirect heating. The upper part of t

BACKGROUND: In the treatment of microtia, the search has been for surgical techniques that prevent postoperative complications and realize sufficient and stable projection of the constructed ear.
METHODS: Cartilage was fixed with absorbable synthetic thread instead of wire because wire has a high risk of exposure. A subcutaneous pedicle was added to the concha to prevent skin necrosis. Dead space and hematoma creation were prevented with vacuum aspiration, bolster fixation, and microdrainage with small tubes. A triangular skin flap connecting to the ear lobe was used to prevent shrinkage on t

In patients with a prominent ear, the most common deformities are a poorly developed antihelical fold and the formation of excessive conchal cartilage, particularly in the posterior conchal wall. As such, the main goal for surgical correction of a prominent ear is to narrow the conchoscaphal angle by folding the antihelix and reducing the concha. In the current study, cartilage-sparing tubing otoplasty is refined by the addition of a minimal dissection of the edge of the conchal and scaphal cartilages, and horizontal mattress sutures between the two edges. Nine patients with 13 cases were oper

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether external and internal defects in microtia are related.
METHOD: Magnetic resonance images of the eustachian tube cartilage were evaluated for 20 patients who had unilateral microtia. Nineteen patients were classified as Grade 2, and one was classified as Grade 3. The Grade 3 patient also had unilateral facial palsy.
RESULTS: On T1-, T2-, and proton-density-weighted images, the eustachian tube cartilage was clearly identified as a pair of straight lines with low signal intensity. There was no evidence of hypoplasia of the eustachian

One of the most common complications of total auricular reconstruction is exposure of the ear framework. Various reconstruction methods have been reported depending on the location and size of exposed cartilage. This report describes a safe reconstruction method for each exposed part of the grafted ear framework. From January 2019 to August 2021, 2 cases (4 areas) of framework exposure were observed following autologous microtia reconstruction. The first case developed 2 small areas of skin necrosis on the anterior helix and lower antihelix to concha. The former was reconstructed with a tempor
