Brucellosis in camel, small ruminants, and Somali pastoralists in Eastern Ethiopia: a One Health approach.

Brucellosis is a neglected bacterial zoonotic disease with economic and public health importance in pastoral communities of sub-Saharan Africa. A cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2021 to April 2022, to estimate the prevalence and identify the associated risk factors causing brucellosis in animals and associated with occupational diseases in humans from three selected districts of "the Somali Pastoral region," Eastern Ethiopia. In this study, 1,000 serum samples were screened for anti-Brucella spp. antibodies using Rose Bengal Plate Test (RBPT) and further confirmed using a com

Immunothrombosis and COVID-19 ‒ a nested post-hoc analysis from a 3186 patient cohort in a Latin American public reference hospital.

OBJECTIVE: COVID-19 is associated with an elevated risk of thromboembolism and excess mortality. Difficulties with best anticoagulation practices and their implementation motivated the current analysis of COVID-19 patients who developed Venous Thromboembolism (VTE). METHOD: This is a post-hoc analysis of a COVID-19 cohort, described in an economic study already published. The authors analyzed a subset of patients with confirmed VTE. We described the characteristics of the cohort, such as demographics, clinical status, and laboratory results. We tested differences amid two subgroups of patient

Modulatory Effect of Competitive Exclusion on the Transmission of ESBL E. coli in Chickens.

The extensive use of antimicrobial agents in broiler farms causes the emergence of antimicrobial resistance of E. coli producing severe economic losses to the poultry industry; therefore, monitoring the transmission of ESBL E. coli is of great significance throughout broiler farms. For this reason, we investigated the efficiency of competitive exclusion (CE) products to control the excretion and transmission of ESBL-producing E. coli in broiler chickens. Three hundred samples from 100 broiler chickens were screened for the incidence of E. coli by standard microbiological techniques. The overal

Specific inhibition of the interaction between pseudorabies virus DNA polymerase subunits UL30 and UL42 by a synthetic peptide.

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) is a ubiquitous and economically important swine alphaherpesvirus that causes devastating swine diseases worldwide. PRV-encoded DNA-dependent DNA polymerase, comprised of the catalytic subunit UL30 and the accessory subunit UL42, is essential for viral replication. PRV UL30 and UL42 act as a heterodimer with UL30 harboring inherent DNA polymerase activity and UL42 conferring processivity on the DNA polymerase holoenzyme. The formation of PRV UL30/UL42 heterodimer holoenzyme through protein-protein interactions is indispensable for viral replication. In work described h

Heat stress on cattle embryo: gene regulation and adaptation.

Global warming has been affecting animal husbandry and farming production worldwide via changes in organisms and their habitats. In the tropics, these conditions are adverse for agriculture and animal production in some areas, due to high temperatures and relative humidity, affecting competitiveness related to economic activities. These environments have deteriorated livestock production, due to periods of drought, reduction in forage quality and heat stress, eliciting negative effects on reproduction, weight gain, and reduced meat and milk production. However, the use of animals adapted to tr

Competition for electrons favours N2 O reduction in denitrifying Bradyrhizobium isolates.

Bradyrhizobia are common members of soil microbiomes and known as N2 -fixing symbionts of economically important legumes. Many are also denitrifiers, which can act as sinks or sources for N2 O. Inoculation with compatible rhizobia is often needed for optimal N2 -fixation, but the choice of inoculant may have consequences for N2 O emission. Here, we determined the phylogeny and denitrification capacity of Bradyrhizobium strains, most of them isolated from peanut-nodules. Analyses of genomes and denitrification end-points showed that all were denitrifiers, but only ~1/3 could reduce N2 O. The N2

Epidemiology of Q-fever in goats in Hubei province of China.

Coxiella burnetii (C. burnetii) is an intracellular bacterium, which causes zoonotic disease called Q-fever. However, scarce information is known about the epidemiology of Q-fever in goats in Hubei province of China. A total of 1157 blood samples were collected from the study area and these were tested for antibodies against C. burnetii by employing a commercial competitive ELISA. The results showed that the overall positive rate of C. burnetii was 4.75% (95% CI: 3.6, 6.1) and in different counties it ranged from 1.05 to 11.84% in goats. Antibodies positive against C. burnetii were detected in

A more sensitive, efficient and ISO 17025 validated Magnetic Capture real time PCR method for the detection of archetypal Toxoplasma gondii strains in meat.

Toxoplasma gondii is a globally prevalent, zoonotic parasite of major importance to public health. Various indirect and direct methods can be used for the diagnosis of toxoplasmosis. Whereas serological tests are useful to prove contact with the parasite has occurred, the actual presence of the parasite in the tissues of a seropositive animal is not demonstrated. For this, a bioassay is still the reference method. As an alternative, various PCR methods have been developed, but due to the limited amount of sample that can be tested, combined with a low tissue cyst density, those have proved to

Purification of influenza virus-like particles using sulfated cellulose membrane adsorbers.

BACKGROUND: Vaccines based on virus-like particles (VLPs) are an alternative to inactivated viral vaccines that combine good safety profiles with strong immunogenicity. In order to be economically competitive, efficient manufacturing is required, in particular downstream processing, which often accounts for major production costs. This study describes the optimization and establishment of a chromatography capturing technique using sulfated cellulose membrane adsorbers (SCMA) for purification of influenza VLPs. RESULTS: Using a design of experiments approach, the critical factors for SCMA perf

Scyphomedusae of the Mediterranean: state of the art and future perspectives.

Scyphomedusae (Phylum Cnidaria, Class Scyphozoa) are perceived as a nuisance due to their sudden outbreaks that negatively affect human activities (particularly tourism and fisheries) mainly because of their stings. A brief review of the history of scyphozoan blooms in the Mediterranean and updated information available after 2010 point to an increase in scyphozoan outbreaks. Whilst the negative effects on public health, aquaculture, coastal industrial activities and fisheries operations are undeniable, the effects on the ecosystem are not well defined. We focus on the trophic interactions bet

Disregard of neurological impairments associated with neglected tropical diseases in Africa.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect people in the bottom billion poorest in the world. These diseases are concentrated in rural areas, conflict zones and urban slums in Africa and other tropical areas. While the World Health Organization recognizes seventeen priority NTDs, the list of conditions present in Africa and elsewhere that are eligible to be classified as NTDs is much longer. Although NTDs are generally marginalized, their associated neurological burden has been almost completely disregarded. However, reports indicate that trichuriasis, schistosomiasis and hookworm infection, am

Evaluation of five serological tests for the diagnosis of porcine brucellosis in French Polynesia.

Porcine brucellosis due to Brucella suis biovar 1 raises important issues for pig breeders in French Polynesia. In this region, the disease is enzootic, spreads silently and engenders economic losses in infected farms as well as sporadic human cases. While serological tests are essential in surveillance and control programmes of animal diseases, to date none of the available tests have been shown to be reliable enough to be used as a gold standard in routine individual diagnosis of porcine brucellosis. Few studies about the estimation of the sensitivity and the specificity of porcine brucellos

Serum ovotransferrin as a biomarker of inflammatory diseases in chickens.

Infectious and metabolic disorders are common in poultry and cause stress, poor performance, and mortality that results in considerable economic loss. Identifying the nature of stress in chickens will assist the development of appropriate measures to improve health and welfare. Acute phase proteins are hepatic proteins, the blood concentrations of which change significantly in the event of many health problems including inflammation and physical injuries. Thus, acute phase proteins are used as nonspecific diagnostic markers for various health disorders. Our previous studies showed that serum o

Graphene-Enabled Breathomics: A Translational Roadmap from Fundamental Physics to Non-Invasive Point-of-Care Diagnostics.

Selective molecular recognition of trace volatile biomarkers in humid breath remains a fundamental coordination challenge at graphene interfaces. While exhaled breath contains a complex matrix of more than 3500 volatile organic compounds, clinical transition has been largely challenged by the selectivity-humidity paradox. This review traces the evolution of graphene transduction platforms from fundamental quantum phenomena to coordination-governed interfacial engineering strategies enabling selective molecular recognition. It critically analyzes the atomic-level interactions governing the inte

Annexin A2 orchestrates CSFV entry route selection via the annexin A2/S100A10 heterotetrameric complex.

Classical swine fever virus (CSFV) is a highly contagious pathogen that causes substantial economic losses in swine production, yet the mechanisms governing its cellular entry remain poorly defined. Here, through a combination of pharmacological inhibition, genetic knockout/overexpression, and co-immunoprecipitation, we identify annexin A2 (ANXA2) as a pivotal host determinant of CSFV entry into PK-15 cells. Confocal microscopy revealed that CSFV infection rapidly induced the translocation of ANXA2 to the cell surface, and functional assays confirmed that its plasma membrane localization was e

Efficient Electrolysis of Biomass-Derived Carbonyl Compounds to Alcohols via Lanthanide-Modulated Hydrogenation Pathways.

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation of biomass-derived carbonyl compounds offers a sustainable alternative to thermochemical routes, yet its selectivity is often constrained by unavoidable competition with hydrogen evolution through surface-bound H* intermediates. Here we demonstrate that electrocatalytic hydrogenation pathways can be reprogrammed via lanthanide assisted adsorption configuration engineering strategy, enabling direct control over reaction mechanisms at the electrode-electrolyte interface. Using levulinic acid (LA) as a representative biomass-derived carbonyl compound, cobalt nanopar

Mitigating Salmonella in Poultry Using Probiotics: Mechanisms, Challenges, and Opportunities.

The global poultry industry continues to face significant challenges due to Salmonella infections, which pose severe public health concerns and economic losses. Recently, the reemergence of antimicrobial resistance has led to the restriction of antibiotic use in poultry, especially as growth promoters, thus accelerating the search for sustainable alternatives. Among these, probiotics have gained attention as potential candidates for improving poultry health and mitigating Salmonella colonization in the gut. This review summarizes the key mechanisms through which probiotics exert anti-Salmonell

Language Models as a Challenge for Business Ethics - A Partially Open-Source Approach.

Large language models have become central infrastructures of contemporary digital economies while raising persistent ethical concerns regarding linguistic inequality, opacity, data governance, and the concentration of technological power. Much of the current debate on AI ethics focuses on normative principles such as fairness, transparency, and accountability. While these principles remain essential, they often do not sufficiently explain why ethically problematic outcomes persist under competitive market conditions. This paper addresses that gap by applying Karl Homann's institutional economi

Development of a competitive ELISA based on Brucella neotomae lipopolysaccharide for detecting brucellosis in livestock.

Brucellosis, a global zoonotic threat, requires efficient diagnostic tools for effective surveillance. Commercial competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA) predominantly utilizes smooth lipopolysaccharides (S-LPS) extracted from B. abortus and B. melitensis as key antigens for brucellosis serodiagnosis. However, culturing pathogens requires facilities with high biosafety, which is operationally complex and economically demanding. In this study, we developed a cELISA using LPS extracted from B. neotomae, which can be handled more facilely in biosafety level 2 conditions, and analyz
