The association between family capital and physical exercise among young and middle-aged adults: the potential mediating pathway of intergenerational transmission of education.

INTRODUCTION: Against a backdrop of increasing attention to health inequities, behavioral differences in physical exercise among young and middle-aged adults should be examined through structural factors such as family capital and the intergenerational transmission of education. METHODS: This study uses data from the 2023 China General Social Survey and selects a sample of 2,394 adults aged 18-60. An ordered probit model tests the statistical association between family capital and exercise frequency, the bootstrap method verifies the indirect association of intergenerational educational trans

Real-World Effectiveness, Economic, and Humanistic Outcomes of Selected Oral Antipsychotics in Patients with Schizophrenia: A Systematic Review Evaluating Global Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a complex, chronic mental health disorder that confers a substantial disease burden globally. Oral antipsychotic treatments (OATs) are the mainstay for treating early and advanced stages of schizophrenia. Our systematic review aimed to synthesize literature describing real-world effectiveness, economic, and humanistic outcomes of OATs (asenapine, brexpiprazole, cariprazine, iloperidone, lumateperone, lurasidone, olanzapine/samidorphan, paliperidone, and quetiapine) for successful management of the disease. METHODS: PubMed, American Psychological Association PsycIN

Decomposing Oral Cancer Screening Inequalities Across Wealth Index among Indian Women Aged 30-49 Years: Findings From National Family Health Survey-5.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of oral cancer is critical for reducing morbidity and mortality, yet uptake of screening among women remains low. Socio-economic disparities in screening can hinder equitable health outcomes. This study aimed to quantify inequalities in oral cancer screening among women and identify key contributors using decomposition analysis. METHODS: We analyzed nationally representative survey data of women aged 30-49 years. Self-reported oral cancer screening was the outcome of interest. Socio-economic inequality was measured using the concentration index, and decomposition a

What the comprehensive economics of blindness and visual impairment can help us understand.

Since the year 2000, the amount written about the economics of blindness and visual impairment has increased substantially. In some cases, the studies listed under this heading are calculations of the costs related to vision impairment and blindness at a national or global level; in other cases the studies examine the cost-effectiveness of strategies to prevent or modify visual impairment or blindness that are intended to be applied as a guide to treatment recommendations and coverage decisions. In each case the references are just examples of many that could be cited. These important studies

Rodent models of depression: forced swim and tail suspension behavioral despair tests in rats and mice.

The development of antidepressants requires simple rodent behavioral tests for initial screening before undertaking more complex preclinical tests and clinical evaluation. Presented in the unit are two widely used screening tests used for antidepressants, the forced swim (also termed behavioral despair) test in the rat and mouse, and the tail suspension test in the mouse. These tests have good predictive validity and allow rapid and economical detection of substances with potential antidepressant-like activity. The behavioral despair and the tail suspension tests are based on the same principl

Determinants of disordered eating behaviors among Israeli adolescent girls.

Eating behaviors were assessed by a modified SCOFF questionnaire in a National representative cross-sectional study among 2978 Israeli schoolgirls. The mean age was 14.7. Thirty percent met the criteria for disordered eating. Being Jewish or underweight reduced the odds for disordered eating. The following increased the risk: dieting, early onset of menarche, being overweight or obese, and suffering from constipation. School socio-economic status, physical activity, and smoking status were not contributory. These results help identify possible interventions to prevent the development of disord

Integrating macroeconomic and public health impacts in social planning policies for pandemic response.

Infectious disease outbreaks with pandemic potential present challenges for mitigation and control. Policymakers must reduce disease-associated morbidity and mortality while also minimizing socioeconomic costs of interventions. At present, robust decision frameworks that integrate epidemic and macroeconomic dynamics to inform policy choices, given uncertainty in the current and future state of the outbreak and economic activity, are not widely available. In this study, we propose and analyze an economic-epidemic model to identify robust planning policies that limit epidemic impacts while maint

Fixed-proportion mixtures with the α2-adrenergic agonist clonidine or lofexidine do not alter fentanyl self-administration in non-opioid-dependent male and female rats.

Illicitly manufactured fentanyl has increasingly been adulterated with other chemical substances such as α2-adrenergic agonists. Although xylazine was the initial α-2 agonist reported to be in the illicit fentanyl supply, other α-2 agonists are increasingly being identified, suggesting that xylazine adulteration of illicit fentanyl is intentional to augment fentanyl effects. The aim of the present study was to determine the interactions between 2 clinically available α-2 agonists, clonidine and lofexidine, and fentanyl on reinforcement endpoints in male and female rats. Three drug self-adminis

Heterogeneity in Expectations, Risk Tolerance, and Household Stock Shares: The Attenuation Puzzle.

This paper jointly estimates the relationship between stock share and expectations and risk preferences. The survey allows individual-level, quantitative estimates of risk tolerance and of the perceived mean and variance of stock returns. These estimates have economically and statistically significant association for the distribution of stock shares with relative magnitudes in proportion with the predictions of theories. Incorporating survey measurement error in the estimation model increases the estimated associations twofold, but they are still substantially attenuated being only about 5 per

The cognitive neuroscience of human decision making: a review and conceptual framework.

Decision making, the process of choosing between options, is a fundamental human behavior that has been studied intensively by disciplines ranging from cognitive psychology to economics. Despite the importance of this behavior, the neural substrates of decision making are only beginning to be understood. Impaired decision making is recognized in neuropsychiatric conditions such as dementia and drug addiction, and the inconsistencies and biases of healthy decision makers have been intensively studied. However, the tools of cognitive neuroscience have only recently been applied to understanding

Gestational age at birth and behavioral problems from four to 11 years of age: birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Studies conducted mainly in high-income countries have shown that preterm births are associated with increased risk of behavioral problems and psychiatric disorders. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of behavioral problems from middle-childhood to early-adolescence according to gestational age at birth in a middle-income setting. METHODS: A population-based birth cohort (n = 4231) in Pelotas, Brazil, was followed-up in several occasions from birth to 11 years. Estimated GA was based on last menstrual period or, when unknown or inconsistent, on the Dubowitz method.

Adolescent mothers and their children in later life.

The popular belief that early childbearing almost certainly leads to school dropout, subsequent unwanted births and economic dependence is greatly oversimplified, if not seriously distorted: A longitudinal study of over 300 primarily urban black women who gave birth as adolescents in the middle to late 1960s shows that a substantial majority completed high school, found regular employment and, even if they had at some point been on welfare, eventually managed to escape dependence on public assistance. Relatively few ended up with large families; most had fewer births than they had wanted or ex

A study on factors that drive variation in the levels of social capital among people living with HIV/AIDS in Iran.

INTRODUCTION: Social capital is increasingly used in relation to health issues, particularly in sexually transmitted diseases/infections and health behaviors. Experiences indicated that social capital can contribute in changing HIV related risk behaviors and a decline of HIV infection through social groups and networking and make more effective use of HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment services. We aimed to assess social capital in these persons through a quantitative study. METHOD: This cross-sectional study was performed with a convenience sample of 300 people living HIV/AIDS referred

Combining Contingency Management With Continuous Glucose Monitoring to Support Type 2 Diabetes Prevention and Care.

Diabetes prevention and care require recurring self-management behaviors whose benefits are often delayed and uncertain. Digital contingency management (CM), which arranges incentives contingent on objective evidence of behavior or outcomes, offers a scalable way to strengthen these behaviors. This commentary argues that continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) can transform CM for diabetes by enabling frequent, remote reinforcement of clinically meaningful proximal targets, including sensor wear, time in range, and other glucose-derived metrics. Emerging artificial intelligence tools may further p
