Development and Application of Cochlear Implant-Based Electric-Acoustic Stimulation of Spiral Ganglion Neurons.

Cochlear implants are currently the most effective treatment for profound sensorineural hearing loss. However, their therapeutic effect is limited by the survival and proper physiological function of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs), which are targeted by the cochlear implant. It is therefore critical to explore the mechanism behind the effect of electric-acoustic stimulation (EAS) on the targeted SGNs. In this work, a biocompatible cochlear implant/graphene EAS system was created by combining a cochlear implant to provide the electrically transformed sound stimulation with graphene as the condu

Electric-acoustic stimulation suppresses tinnitus in a subject with high-frequency single-sided deafness.

BACKGROUND: A suggested solution to suppress tinnitus is to restore the normal sensory input. This is based on the auditory deprivation hypothesis. It is known that hearing aids can provide sufficient activation of the auditory nervous system and reduce tinnitus in subjects with mild to moderate hearing loss and that cochlear implantation can reduce tinnitus in subjects with severe to profound hearing loss. This applies to subjects with single-sided deafness (SSD) or bilateral hearing loss. AIM: To investigate if electric-acoustic stimulation (EAS) can reduce severe tinnitus in a subject with

Modulation of electric brain responses evoked by pitch deviants through transcranial direct current stimulation.

Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder, characterized by a difficulty detecting pitch deviation that is related to abnormal electrical brain responses. Abnormalities found along the right fronto-temporal pathway between the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and the auditory cortex (AC) are the likely neural mechanism responsible for amusia. To investigate the causal role of these regions during the detection of pitch deviants, we applied cathodal (inhibitory) transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over right frontal and right temporal regions during separate testing sessions. We

[Efficacy on analgesia with electric stimulation of long-term retaining needle after laparoscopic cholecystectomy].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical effect of electric stimulation of long-term retaining needle on analgesia after laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) and the impacts on the post-surgical flatus time. METHODS: Under static absorptive composite general anesthesia, 90 cases of LC were randomized into three groups, 30 cases in each one. In the control group, the analgesia was not applied after LC. In the analgesia-pumper group, the patient controlled intravenous analgesia (PCIA) was used. In the needle-retaining group, the electric acupuncture stimulator was used. The needles were inserted transve…

Impact of the gyral geometry on the electric field induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation.

The spatial extent of the effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on neural tissue is only coarsely understood. One key problem is the realistic calculation of the electric field induced in the brain, which proves difficult due to the complex gyral folding pattern that results in an inhomogeneous conductivity distribution within the skull. We used the finite element method (FEM) together with a high-resolution volume mesh of the human head to better characterize the field induced in cortical gray matter (GM). The volume mesh was constructed from T1-weighted structural magnetic reson

Energy expenditure and fatiguability in paraplegic ambulation using reciprocating gait orthosis and electric stimulation.

To clarify the relationship between metabolic energy expenditure and fatiguability in paraplegic persons fitted with orthoses, we measured energy consumption in six thoracic paraplegic patients ambulating by means of reciprocating gait orthosis (RGO) used with and without functional electrical stimulation (FES). The data obtained from persons using both RGO and FES were adjusted to allow for the effects of fatiguability so as to obtain an approximate value for upper-body consumption. The data obtained from persons using RGO only were not adjusted, because no energy consumption occurred in the

[Treatment of patients with lumbar osteochondrosis by the method of intra-tissular electric stimulation].

The authors proposed the method of treatment of pain syndromes in case of the spine osteochondrosis--intratissular electrostimulation, consisting in application of electric current to the damaged vertebra by means of a needle-electrode. To determine the efficiency of the proposed method 2 groups of patients (140 persons) were treated by the traditional complex method and intratissular electrostimulation of the spine. The efficiency of the new method as compared with the other ones has been proven by means of complex investigation of the spine biomechanic and the state of muscles in dynamics.

Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) in the therapy of chronic facial pain. Preliminary report.

Chronic facial pain remains a therapeutic problem. We report on 29 patients (37 nerves involved), who were treated with transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS). Pain reduction was achieved in 27 patients (93%) while in 5 patients it was possible to stop the treatment because they were constantly free from pain. Two patients did not respond to TENS therapy. It was possible to reduce or discontinue the use of analgesics in 79% of the cases. There were no severe side effects. Therefore, TENS should be seen as a simple, safe and effective method of treatment for many forms of chronic faci

Induction of the rectoanal reflex by electric stimulation. A diagnostic aid for Hirschsprung's disease.

We induced the rectoanal reflex electrically in three groups of children, following rectal dilatation with a balloon. In normal children, and in children with constipation or ileus due to causes other than Hirschsprung's disease, the rectoanal reflex was induced by electric stimulation as well as by dilatation of the rectum with a balloon. In children with Hirschsprung's disease, however, no typical reflex was obtained by either of these stimuli. Since electric stimulation does not dilate the rectum, passive dilatation of the anus or shift of the probe along with balloon expansion does not tak…

[Results of the treatment of children with neurogenic bladder by transurethral intravesical electric stimulation].

The intravesical transurethal electrostimulation was introduced by F. Katona in order to create consciously controlled micturition in patients with neurogenic bladder lesions. The principle of therapy is based on the activation of the intramural receptors and vegetative pathways from the bladder with special exponential electric impulses. The electric stimulation should evoke the bladder sensation and finally the conscious urge to void might develop. Simultaneously the detrusor tonus should be normalised and evoked contractions become stronger and organised, to be able to empty bladder in stre…

Enhancement of osmotic thirst elicited by electric stimulation of the limbic system in dogs.

Seven dogs were chronically implanted with 30 electrodes directed at various structures of the basal forebrain. Osmotic thirst threshold (expressed as an increase in plasma osmolality and a decrease in cellular water content caused by an intravenous infusion of 5% NaCl, necessary to induce drinking) was measured during electric stimulation of the basal forebrain and compared to that found under control conditions. Stimulation through 11 electrodes located in the lateral part of the septum (5 locations) and other parts of the limbic system markedly decreased the osmotic thirst threshold. The in…

Optimizing stimulation parameters: transpalpebral and transbrain electrical stimulation for retinal protection in RCS rats.

INTRODUCTION: Retinitis pigmentosa is a genetically heterogeneous retinopathy causing photoreceptor death and blindness. Electrical stimulation is a promising non-invasive neuroprotective strategy. This study investigated the neuroprotective effects of transpalpebral ES (TpES) and transbrain ES (TbES) delivered at Gallbladder meridian acupoints (GB14, GB16, GB20) in Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) rats, and identified optimal parameters for each modality. METHODS: RCS rats were randomized to control, sham, TpES (200, 400, 600, 800 µA), and TbES (15, 30, 50, 100 Hz) groups. Stimulation was giv
