Differences in theta coherence between spatial and nonspatial attention using intracranial electroencephalographic signals in humans.

A number of previous studies revealed the importance of the frontoparietal network for attention and preparatory top-down control. Here, we investigated the theta (7-9 Hz) coherence of the right frontoparietal networks to explore the differences in connectivity changes for the right frontoparietal regions during spatial attention (i.e., attention to a specific location rather than a specific feature) and nonspatial attention (i.e., attention to a specific feature rather than a specific location) tasks. The theta coherence in both tasks was primarily maintained at a preparatory state, decreases

Electrical Stimulations of the Human Insula: Their Contribution to the Ictal Semiology of Insular Seizures.

INTRODUCTION: Stereotactic stimulations of the insular cortex through intracranial electrodes aim at characterizing the semiology of insular seizures. These stimulations, carried out in the context of Stereo-Electro-Encephalography (SEEG) during presurgical monitoring of epilepsy, reproduce the ictal symptoms observed during the development of insular seizures. METHODS: The authors reviewed the results of insular stimulations performed in 222 patients admitted between 1997 and 2015 for presurgical SEEG exploration of atypical temporal or perisylvian epilepsy. Stimulations (50 Hz, trains of 5

Multimodality language mapping in patients with left-hemispheric language dominance on Wada test.

OBJECTIVE: We determined the utility of electrocorticography (ECoG) and stimulation for detecting language-related sites in patients with left-hemispheric language-dominance on Wada test. METHODS: We studied 13 epileptic patients who underwent language mapping using event-related gamma-oscillations on ECoG and stimulation via subdural electrodes. Sites showing significant gamma-augmentation during an auditory-naming task were defined as language-related ECoG sites. Sites at which stimulation resulted in auditory perceptual changes, failure to verbalize a correct answer, or sensorimotor sympto…

Clinical significance and developmental changes of auditory-language-related gamma activity.

OBJECTIVE: We determined the clinical impact and developmental changes of auditory-language-related augmentation of gamma activity at 50-120 Hz recorded on electrocorticography (ECoG). METHODS: We analyzed data from 77 epileptic patients ranging 4-56 years in age. We determined the effects of seizure-onset zone, electrode location, and patient-age upon gamma-augmentation elicited by an auditory-naming task. RESULTS: Gamma-augmentation was less frequently elicited within seizure-onset sites compared to other sites. Regardless of age, gamma-augmentation most often involved the 80-100 Hz freque…

Sleep enhances gamma oscillations in the seizure onset zone and broadband activity in the irritative zone of focal cortical dysplasia.

OBJECTIVE: Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is a leading cause of drug-resistant epilepsy and is associated with sleep-related seizures, yet the underlying electrophysiological mechanisms during different brain states remain poorly understood. We investigated whether fast oscillations (FOs) within the seizure onset zone (SOZ) and irritative zone (IZ) change significantly during sleep compared with wake in FCD patients. We analyzed multiple frequency bands-beta (14-20 Hz), gamma (40-80 Hz), ripple (80-250 Hz), and broadband BGR (14-250 Hz) to provide comprehensive information about sleep-related

Region-specific high-frequency oscillations under propofol anesthesia: comparison of epileptogenic and functional cortex.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the rates of pathological and physiological high-frequency oscillations (HFOs; 80-200 Hz) differ between non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREM) and propofol anesthesia (PA). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 11 patients with drug-resistant epilepsy who underwent chronic intracranial EEG monitoring and intraoperative EEG recording under PA. Among 761implanted electrodes, 29 sites were classified as epileptogenic cortex (EC), defined as seizure onset sites whose resection resulted in postoperative seizure freedom. Fifty-eight sites were classified as functional c

Pro-ictal, rather than pre-ictal, brain state marked by global critical slowing and local gamma power increase.

OBJECTIVE: The pre-surgical evaluation of epilepsy relies on the electrophysiological recordings of spontaneous seizures. During this period drug dose decreases increase the likelihood of seizures transitioning the brain from a low to high seizure likelihood state, so-called pro-ictal state. This study aimed to identify the dynamic brain changes characteristic of this transition from 386 ten-minute segments of intracranial EEG recordings of 29 patients with drug-refractory temporal lobe epilepsy. METHODS: We studied brain dynamics through mean phase locking value and relative power in gamma b

Naturalistic acute pain states decoded from neural and facial dynamics.

Pain remains poorly understood in task-free contexts, limiting our understanding of its neurobehavioral basis in naturalistic settings. Here, we use a multimodal, data-driven approach with intracranial electroencephalography, pain self-reports, and facial expression analysis to study acute pain in twelve epilepsy patients under continuous neural and audiovisual monitoring. Using machine learning, we successfully decode individual participants' high versus low pain states from distributed neural activity, involving mesolimbic regions, striatum, and temporoparietal cortex. Neural representation

Repetitive cortical spreading depolarizations are prolonged early after experimental traumatic brain injury.

Cortical spreading depolarizations (CSDs) are the most common electrophysiological dysfunction following a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and clustered CSDs (≥3 CSDs in 2 h) are associated with poor outcomes 6 months after TBI. While many experimental studies have investigated a single CSD after injury, no known studies have investigated how time after injury affects the characteristics and impact of a CSD cluster. This study sought to determine the characteristics of a cluster of repetitive CSDs when induced at three different time points after moderate experimental TBI. Adult male Sprague Daw

Frequency-Dependent Cortical Interactions during Semantic Processing: An Electrocorticogram Cross-spectrum Analysis Using a Semantic Space Model.

Convergent evidence has demonstrated that semantics are represented by the interaction between a multimodal semantic hub at the anterior temporal lobe (ATL) and other modality-specific association cortical areas. Electrocorticogram (ECoG) recording with high spatiotemporal resolutions is efficient in evaluating such cortical interactions; however, this has not been a focus of preceding studies. The present study evaluated cortical interactions during picture naming using a novel ECoG cross-spectrum analysis, which was formulated from a computational simulation of neuronal networks and combined

Spatially Dissociated Intracerebral Maps for Face- and House-Selective Activity in the Human Ventral Occipito-Temporal Cortex.

We report a comprehensive mapping of the human ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC) for selective responses to frequency-tagged faces or landmarks (houses) presented in rapid periodic trains of objects, with intracerebral recordings in a large sample (N = 75). Face-selective contacts are three times more numerous than house-selective contacts and show a larger amplitude, with a right hemisphere advantage for faces. Most importantly, these category-selective contacts are spatially dissociated along the lateral-to-medial VOTC axis, respectively, consistent with neuroimaging evidence. At the m

Effects of vitamin D and paricalcitol on epileptogenesis and behavioral properties of WAG/Rij rats with absence epilepsy.

AIM: Vitamin D (Vit D) has been considered as a neurosteroid and has a pivotal role in neuroprotection including epilepsy. Vit D regulator acts via a Vit D receptor (VDR). WAG/Rij rats have a genetically epileptic model of absence epilepsy with comorbidity of depression. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of Vit D and paricalcitol (PRC) on WAG/Rij rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty-three male WAG/Rij rats and seven male Wistar rats were used. The effects of acute and chronic treatment with Vit D (5.000 and 60.000 IU/kg, i.p) and PRC (0.5, 5 and 10 μg/kg, i.p) on absence

Selective visual representation of letters and words in the left ventral occipito-temporal cortex with intracerebral recordings.

We report a comprehensive cartography of selective responses to visual letters and words in the human ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC) with direct neural recordings, clarifying key aspects of the neural basis of reading. Intracerebral recordings were performed in a large group of patients (n = 37) presented with visual words inserted periodically in rapid sequences of pseudofonts, nonwords, or pseudowords, enabling classification of responses at three levels of word processing: letter, prelexical, and lexical. While letter-selective responses are found in much of the VOTC, with a higher

Low frequency pulse stimulation of Schaffer collaterals in Trpm4-/- knockout rats differently affects baseline BOLD signals in target regions of the right hippocampus but not BOLD responses at the site of stimulation.

Electrical stimulation of right Schaffer collateral in Trpm4-/- knockout and wild type rats were used to study the role of Trpm4 channels for signal processing in the hippocampal formation. Stimulation induced neuronal activity was simultaneously monitored in the CA1 region by in vivo extracellular field recordings and in the entire brain by BOLD fMRI measurements. In wild type and Trpm4-/- knockout rats, consecutive 5 Hz pulse trains elicited similar neuronal responses in the CA1 region and similar BOLD responses in the stimulated right hippocampus. Stimulus-related positive BOLD responses we

Discrimination of a medial functional module within the temporal lobe using an effective connectivity model: A CCEP study.

The temporal lobe is classically divided in two functional systems: the ventral visual pathway and the medial temporal memory system. However, their functional separation has been challenged by studies suggesting that the medial temporal lobe could be best understood as an extension of the hierarchically organized ventral visual pathway. Our purpose was to investigate (i) whether cerebral regions within the temporal lobe could be grouped into distinct functional assemblies, and (ii) which regions were central within these functional assemblies. We studied low intensity and low frequency electr

Intracranial electroencephalographic approaches in the intensive care unit: Safety, feasibility, and coverage.

OBJECTIVE: Nonconvulsive epileptic activity is common after acute brain injury and contributes to neuronal injury and poor outcomes. Although intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) improves detection compared with surface EEG (suEEG), it currently relies on focal recordings of epileptic dynamics. We prospectively evaluated multielectrode iEEG strategies designed to achieve large-scale cortical and deep brain coverage in critically ill patients. METHODS: In a prospective cohort of adults with acute brain injury requiring invasive neuromonitoring, we implemented four depth electrode-based i

Baseline Dynamics and Sleep Loss-Driven Changes of Electrocorticographic Aperiodic Properties Are Altered in Mice Lacking Neuroligin-2.

Spectral power decay (1/fβ) of cortical activity has long been considered of low relevance to the understanding of brain function (e.g., associated with background noise of neuronal activity). However, growing literature suggests that it can reflect optimized spatiotemporal organization of neuronal activity across the cortex serving both cognition and behavior. Thus, clarifying the mechanisms underlying the regulation of this network property could have numerous impacts for the neuroscience field as well as for patients suffering from various neurological disorders with cognitive deficits link

A motor thalamic site in humans that suppresses involuntary breathing without awareness.

Breathing is generated by brainstem respiratory networks but can be controlled and modulated by forebrain activity. The recent clinical adoption of thalamic electrode implantation during intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) provides a rare opportunity to examine the role of the human thalamus in respiratory control. Here, we tested whether thalamic stimulation alters breathing in 11 patients undergoing iEEG for epilepsy monitoring. Across 412 stimulation trials at 108 thalamic sites, thalamic stimulation induced central apnea in every participant. Apnea occurred in isolation without sens
