Elephantiasis nostras verrucosa (ENV) is a rare, end-stage complication of chronic nonfilarial lymphedema, marked by progressive dermal fibrosis, hyperkeratosis, and verrucous skin changes, which increase susceptibility to recurrent infections and chronic wounds. We present a 77-year-old man with longstanding bilateral lower-extremity lymphedema, severe hyperkeratosis, malodorous drainage, and polymicrobial wound infection. Examination revealed extensive verrucous lesions with worsening edema and drainage from chronic venous stasis wounds, along with hyperkeratotic changes consistent with ENV.…

Filariasis is a chronic disease where parasitic worms survive in human hosts even for decades and lead to complications like lymphedema and elephantiasis. Despite the persistent existence of filarial parasites in human hosts, fatal and thrombotic complications are not known, unlike other parasitic diseases like malaria. This suggests that filarial parasites might be affecting the host's platelet functions. This study was conducted to examine platelet functions in confirmed filariasis patients and healthy controls. Results showed that filariasis patients had larger platelets, inhibited aggregat…

Filariasis, a neglected tropical disease (NTD), is mainly caused by nematodes-Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and B. timori Apart from profoundly disabling and disfiguring major clinical manifestations-lymphoedema, elephantiasis and hydrocoele-asymptomatic microfilaremia is common in endemic areas. Despite this, it is very rare to detect microfilariae in body fluids or aspirates. As per the literature search, this is the third case documenting incidental detection of microfilariae with metastatic deposits in the liver aspirate. Here, a 35-year-old man underwent image-guided fine-needle asp…

Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) is a sexually transmitted infection endemic in Central Africa, South-East Asia and in some countries of Centr … sive lymphadenopathy, which is usually unilateral, and eventually by lymphatic obstruction, causing elephantiasis. During 2004 a LGV ano-rectal clinical variant has been described as an erosive proctitis among homosexual HIV-positive men in some countries of Western Europe, not coming from endemic areas. Until now this syndrome has been often explained as chron …

In the mid nineteenth century, laboratory research in embryology, development, ecology and pathogeny of helminths unexpectedly resulted in a … demic medicine. The causality of known diseases, such as intertropical hypoemia, hematochyluria and elephantiasis, became the focus of intense debate between 1866 and 1892. By the end of this period, the field of helminthic parasitology had available well-established methodological and conceptual criteria and the role of Ankylostomum duodenale and of Wuchereria …

An epidemiological study to document the endemicity and transmission characteristics of bancroftian filariasis was conducted in an irrigation project community in southern Ghana. In a 50% random sample of the population, the prevalence of microfilaraemia was 26.4% and the geometric mean microfilarial intensity among positives was 819 microfilariae/ml of blood. Hydrocoele was found in 13.8% of the males aged > or =18 years, and 1.4% of the residents examined, all females, had tymphoedema/elephantiasis. Detailed monitoring of the microfilarial intensity in 8 individuals over a 24-h period confir…

Three types of lateral groin flap have been applied to reconstruct the external genitals and to repair skin defects in the perineal region. A single lateral groin flap was used to construct a vagina for 2 patients who had congenital absence of vagina. A composite flap containing iliac crest bone was applied to reconstruct the penis in 11 patients: 8 suffered traumatic amputation and 3 had congenital micropenis. A coaxial pedicle flap of the lateral groin and abdominal area was used to repair skin defects of the penis and scrotum after resection of the elephantiasis caused by recurrent erysipel…

We leveraged the ability of EPIFIL transmission models fit to field data to evaluate the use of the WHO Transmission Assessment Survey (TAS) for supporting Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) intervention stopping decisions. Our results indicate that understanding the underlying parasite extinction dynamics, particularly the protracted transient dynamics involved in shifts to the extinct state, is crucial for understanding the impacts of using TAS for determining the achievement of LF elimination. These findings warn that employing stopping criteria set for operational purposes, as employed in the TAS s

Podoconiosis is a non-filarial and non-communicable disease leading to lymphedema of the lower limbs. Worldwide, 4 million individuals live with podoconiosis, which is accompanied by disability and painful intermittent acute inflammatory episodes that attribute to significant disability adjusted life years (DALYs). Different risk factors like contact with volcanic red clay soil, high altitude (above 1000 m), high seasonal rainfall (above 1000 mm/year) and occupation (e.g., subsistence farmer) are associated with the risk of podoconiosis. Although podoconiosis was described to be endemic in 32

Lymphatic filariasis has been described as a "spectral disease". Analysis of the natural course of infection in nonendemic individuals as well as experimental infections of "volunteers" suggests that the filarial parasites are not inherently aggressive infectious agents. Experimental infections of humans with infective larvae result in transient, low-level microfilaremia, if at all. Nonendemic individuals with limited exposure show no evidence of persistent infection or pathology. Nonendemic individuals exposed to repeated infections show accelerated pathology. It is tempting to speculate that
