Pushing Limits - The role of pain and painkillers in Olympic Weightlifting.

The PLAY study (Pain, Lesions and Analgesics in Youth and Elite Sports) investigates the extent, patterns and treatment of pain in organised professional sports. This study, presented here for the first time, focused on Olympic weightlifting in this context. As part of a case-control study, weightlifters from the German Olympic squad (OSW, n=35) were compared with matched controls from the general population (n=35) using 1:1 matching for sex, age, and BMI. Validated, field-tested questions and scores were used to record the prevalence of pain, analgesic consumption and willingness to compete d

Implications of altered autonomic control on sports performance in athletes with spinal cord injury.

It is well known that athletes with spinal cord injury (SCI) may experience altered autonomic physiology that impacts their exercise capacity and sports performance. This is particularly relevant given the ever-increasing number of individuals with SCI who are actively engaged in sports at all levels, from community-based adaptive sports to elite Paralympic competitions. As such, the purpose of this article is to review the present literature regarding the implications of altered autonomic control on the safety and performance of athletes with SCI. A particular emphasis will be placed on the a

Leg-specific modulation of muscle synergies during Tai Chi heel kick in elite athletes.

PURPOSE: The Tai Chi heel-kick is a slow, high-amplitude single-leg movement that places substantial demands on lower-limb coordination, dynamic balance, and controlled force transfer, and is increasingly incorporated into performance training and rehabilitation programs. This study investigated muscle synergies and activation timing differences between the left and right legs of elite Tai Chi athletes during the heel-kick and explored leg-specific neuromuscular control features by combining synergy analysis with spinal segment statistical parametric mapping (SPM). METHODS: Twelve national-le

Electrical twitch obtaining intramuscular stimulation (ETOIMS) for myofascial pain syndrome in a football player.

BACKGROUND: Flare up of acute lower back pain associated with myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) may require various forms of treatment including activity restriction and bracing. Electrical twitch obtaining intramuscular stimulation (ETOIMS) is a promising new treatment. It involves the use of a strong monopolar electromyographic needle electrode for electrical stimulation of deep motor end plate zones in multiple muscles in order to elicit twitches. CASE REPORT: An elite American football player with MPS symptoms failed to respond to standard treatments. He then received ETOIMS which completely

Isokinetic torque imbalances in the rotator cuff of the elite water polo player.

The specific repetitive activity of water polo, like baseball pitching, emphasizes adduction and internal rotation. This study used the Cybex II to evaluate the isokinetic strength of the rotator cuff in elite water polo players and in a group of control subjects. The water polo players were significantly stronger than the controls. Of greater importance was the confirmation of imbalances in the rotator cuff force couples of adduction/abduction and external/internal rotation. These changes are similar to those reported for pitchers. The adductors in the water polo group had gained in relative

RAB3GAP2 is a regulator of skeletal muscle endothelial cell proliferation and associated with capillary-to-fiber ratio.

Skeletal muscle capillary density is correlated with physical performance and whole-body metabolic properties. Thus, we performed a genome-wide association study of skeletal muscle capillary-to-fiber ratio (C:F) (n = 603 males) and found that the rs115660502 G allele was associated (p < 5 × 10-8) with increased C:F and reduced skeletal muscle expression of RAB3 GTPase-activating non-catalytic protein subunit 2 (RAB3GAP2). The capillary-increasing G allele was more prevalent in elite endurance athletes than in power athletes and non-athlete controls in two independent cohorts. Low-muscle-expres
