Enterobius vermicularis infection among pre-school children in Karen hilltribe villages in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

We surveyed Karen hilltribe villages in the Mae Chaem District of Chiang Mai Province between April and May 2001. Two hundred and forty-nine pre-school children were selected by stratified sampling from 10 villages and were examined for Enterobius vermicularis eggs by the Scotch tape perianal examination technique. One hundred and thirteen (53 boys and 60 girls) were found to have E. vermicularis eggs, giving an overall infection rate of 45.38%. We were able to determine that E. vermicularis infection is prevalent among the children of these hilltribe villages.

In vitro embryonation of Syphacia obvelata eggs.

Mouse infections with the pinworm, Syphacia obvelata, were evaluated as a potential model of human enterobiasis. Eggs of S. obvelata were found to be much less resistant to adverse environmental factors than those of Enterobius vermicularis, perishing rapidly when exposed to desiccation or to water. The average number of eggs produced by a female worm was 317 +/- 29 S.D. (range: 266-347), which is about 2-3% of the fecundity of E. vermicularis. Eggs expressed from gravid S. obvelata were incubated under various conditions, but the only reliable method of supporting complete embryonation was cu…

Repurposing the FDA-approved pinworm drug pyrvinium as a novel chemotherapeutic agent for intestinal polyposis.

Mutations in the WNT-pathway regulator ADENOMATOUS POLYPOSIS COLI (APC) promote aberrant activation of the WNT pathway that is responsible f … d inhibited adenoma formation in APCmin mice. Considering its well-documented safe use for treating enterobiasis in humans, our findings suggest that Pyrvinium could be repurposed for the clinical treatment of APC-associated polyposes.

Egg positive rate of Enterobius vermicularis and Taenia spp. by cellophane tape method in primary school children in Sivas, Turkey.

The aim of the present study was to find out the number of students with enterobiasis and/or taeniasis in primary schools of Sivas. Among the 2,029 students in 6 primary schools, 316 (15.6%) were positive to Enterobius vermicularis eggs and 32 (1.6%) were positive to Taenia spp. eggs by the cellophane tape method. The egg positive rates of E. vermicularis and Taenia spp. ranged from 9.4% to 27.2% and from 0.8% to 2.6% respectively among six schools. The egg positive rate of E. vermicularis was found to be significantly different among these schools (chi2 = 31.96, P < 0.05), whereas there was n…

Ecto and endoparasites in two primary schools in Qualyob City, Egypt.

Ecto and endoparasites are still one of the public health problems in Egypt. This is particularly true among school students who are exposed to the parasitic infections or infestations by autoinfection or by contagious. In this paper, two primary schools were selected in Qualyob City, Qualyobia Governorate (in the Nile Delta). Examination of 486 school children (6-12 years old) revealed pediculosis (16.04), schistosomiasis (8.8%), amoebiasis (7.81%), giardiasis (9.05%), taeniasis saginata (0.41%), ascariasis (9.05%), enterobiasis (0.9%) and hymenolepiasis nana (9.87%). It was found that ectopa…

Prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis among preschool children in Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea.

We assessed the prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis infection and changes in the egg positive rate (EPR) over 1-year time, using the adhes … nversion were significantly higher and lower, respectively, than in other age groups. Conclusively, enterobiasis was prevalent during 2008-2009 among preschool children in Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do, and the increased EPR in 2009 was due to an increase in newly acquired infections among 5-7-year-old children.

Human intestinal nematode infections in Sri Lanka: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Sri Lanka, an island located in South Asia, once experienced a notable prevalence of human intestinal nematode infections (HINIs … the island was 0.97% (ascariasis-0.45%, trichuriasis-0.25%, and hookworm infection-0.29%), and the enterobiasis prevalence between 2003 and 2017 ranged from 0% to 42.5%. Strongyloidiasis had been understudied, with a prevalence of 0.1% to 2%. Over the past two decades, the islandwide pooled HINI prevalence was 13.3%. Within specific demographics, it was 6.96% …

[A case of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis complicated by pinworm infection in a child: immune interaction mechanism and stepwise treatment strategy].

This article reports a rare pediatric case of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) complicated by concurrent pinworm infection, highlighting immune interaction and individualized, stepwise management. A 10-year-7-month-old girl presented with recurrent cough and wheezing; laboratory testing showed marked eosinophilia (1.23×109/L) and elevated total immunoglobulin E (1 196 IU/mL). Aspergillus fumigatus IgG was 88.61 AU/mL, and Aspergillus fumigatus allergen m3-specific IgE was 0.37 IU/mL. Stool parasite examination confirmed pinworm infection. Chest computed tomography demonstrated at

Prevalence and Epidemiological Patterns of Enterobius vermicularis Infection in Thailand: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Enterobiasis, caused by Enterobius vermicularis, is recognized as a common intestinal helminthiasis worldwide. Despite multiple surveys in Thailand, no pooled synthesis at the country level has been carried out to evaluate prevalence patterns, temporal trends, or vulnerable groups. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis were undertaken to provide an updated and comprehensive estimate of the prevalence of E. vermicularis in Thailand and to identify high-risk populations for targeted interventions. METHODS: The systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accor…

Enterobius vermicularis-associated appendicitis: A 22-year case series and comprehensive review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Enterobius vermicularis is known to be associated with appendicitis, however a causal relationship between Enterobius and appendicitis has not been established. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between appendiceal Enterobius and histologic appendicitis. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of all pediatric appendectomies between 1997 and 2019. Patients with diagnosed with Enterobius were included for analysis. Patient demographics, operative findings, and pathologic reports were queried. Data were entered into an encrypted database and subsequently

Inadvertent detection of massive Enterobius vermicularis infection in an asymptomatic adult with rectal blowout following barotrauma.

Enterobius vermicularis (pin worm) is a common intestinal parasite infection which usually affects children and rarely causes significant illness. However, of the few reports of extra-intestinal E. vermicularis infection reported in the literature, patients can have significant morbidity and mortality, thus stressing the need for appropriate management of pin worm infection. We report a case of massive E. vermicularis infection in a 20-year-old male which was inadvertently discovered during an emergency abdominal surgery. The case emphasizes the need to perform routine ova-parasite screening a
