While the evaluation and treatment of patients with seizures or epilepsy is often challenging, modern therapy provides many patients with complete seizure control. After a first seizure, evaluation should focus on excluding an underlying neurologic or medical condition, assessing the relative risk of seizure recurrence and determining whether treatment is indicated. The convulsive disorders are among the more frequently occurring neurologic disorders of childhood, affecting more than 4% of all children. The most frequently occurring disorder, febrile convulsions, shows wide geographic variation and is usually benign. Children with epilepsy (which affects about 1% of the population by age 20) generally have an excellent prognosis. The small proportion of patients whose epilepsy is not controlled after two years of treatment should be considered for alternative therapies.

This study was carried out to determine the prevailing type of epilepsy in neurocysticercosis. We also evaluated if it could account for the predominance of generalized epilepsy in Peru. We studied the records and EEGs of 49 cases of neurocysticercosis, representing 5.9% of all hospital admissions. In summary, our main findings were firstly, that faulty visuolingual processing at the level of Brain's visual word schemas, with its intimate connection with the verbal memory pool, is the abnormality that is essential for initiation of spike activity in reading epilepsy. Secondly, visual input is not essential in production of reading epilepsy. Thirdly, we have demonstrated a subconscious voluntary control mechanism operating in our patient. Lastly, we have illustrated alternatives to drug therapy, which, in our patient and in other cases, has not been shown of great value.
