Slipped capital femoral epiphysis is a paediatric hip disorder that affects around 30 children in Norway each year. The symptoms are a limping gait and pain in the hip or knee. The condition is diagnosed by normal x-ray and treatment is surgical. It is essential to make the diagnosis as quickly as possible, and children with persistent hip symptoms should be rapidly examined by means of a hip x-ray.

CASE: An 18-year-old man with a slipped capital femoral epiphysis treated within in situ screw fixation 5 years earlier presented to our clinic with hip pain, limping, and limited range of motion (ROM) of the left hip. Fixator-assisted nailing (FAN) accompanied by double femoral osteotomies was performed to treat the proximal femoral deformity. At follow-up, the patient had regained full ROM and acceptable alignment of the left lower limb.
CONCLUSION: The FAN approach effectively manages proximal femoral deformities in select patients. It requires careful analysis of the deformity, meticulous

An adolescent obese boy showed late-onset unilateral tibia vara associated with physeal separation (slipped epiphysis) of the lateral proximal tibia and physeal widening of the lateral distal femur. These affected physes showed normal signal intensities by MRI. He was treated with lateral hemiepiphysiodesis of the left proximal tibia and the distal femur using two parallel eight-Plates, and varus deformity rapidly improved postoperatively without recurrence. This is the first case of late-onset tibia vara caused by lateral physeal separation of the proximal tibia. Normal growth of the medial p

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis in adults is uncommon. The purpose of this study was to report our own four cases (six hips) of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) in adulthood and to review the cases reported in the literature. The authors attempted to investigate the various causative underlying disorders and clinical characteristics, treatment, outcome, and complications.
METHODS: We searched for all 22 reported cases of SCFE in adults age 18 years and older via MEDLINE and Google Scholar from 1963 to 2012 without any exception. In doing so, we documented our own four ca

Early screening is key for patients, such as those with Down syndrome, at high risk for associated diseases. Slipped capital femoral epiphysis and hypothyroidism require a high level of suspicion, screening, and early referral to avoid long-term complications.

Conditions that adversely affect a child's hip alignment, joint congruity, or articular surfaces often result in joint destruction associated with pain and motion limitation later in life. The usual culprits are developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), slipped capital femoral epiphysis, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, infection, trauma, and neoplasm. In this review, we address DDH, the most common cause of secondary osteoarthritis of the hip. Symptomatic sequelae of DDH present challenges for total hip arthroplasty, including excessive proximal femoral anteversion,

Avascular necrosis is the most devastating complication associated with slipped capital femoral epiphysis. In this case report, we present the clinical and radiological outcome of two patients after proximal femoral osteotomy for avascular necrosis associated with slipped capital femoral epiphysis. The Iowa hip score was used to assess the function. Periodic radiographic observations showed no progression of the collapse, and bone remodelling of the necrotic femoral head. Our evaluation of patients who underwent proximal femoral osteotomy for avascular necrosis prior to collapse of the femoral

Screwing of slipped capital femoral epiphysis must prevent its further slipping by prematurely fusing the physis. Whichever material is used, persistent femoral growth has been described, thereby increasing the risk of bone deformation. The objective of this study is to evaluate the residual growth after screwing of slipped capital femoral epiphysis. This study concerned 26 children, among which 13 children have been included, and 13 children excluded because of an incomplete clinical or radiological follow-up, or treatment by another technique. The pathological hip was treated with one screw

In the management of slipped capital femoral epiphysis, the modified technique of so-called open traction reduction has proven to be atraumatic, relatively straightforward in terms of surgical technique, and has led to successful outcomes. It seems that additional, that is, surgery-related circulatory disorders of the femoral epiphysis can be avoided by this method.

Feline physeal dysplasia typically presents as unilateral or bilateral, atraumatic, slipped capital femoral epiphysis. The femoral physeal lesion consists of retention of a cartilaginous physis beyond the expected age of closure, with disorganization of the chondrocytes and subsequent slippage. In this article, we describe two cats with feline physeal dysplasia and slipped capital femoral epiphysis that died of unrelated causes (cardiomyopathy and lymphosarcoma). At necropsy, additional sites were found to have retained physes with similar abnormal arrangement of chondrocytes. This confirms th

The lateral head-shaft angle as described by Southwick is used to assess the severity of slipped capital femoral epiphysis and to measure progression. Intraobserver variability in measuring the lateral head-shaft angle may influence decision making. The purpose of this study was to determine intraobserver variability in the measurement of the lateral head-shaft angle of slipped capital femoral epiphysis. The lateral head-shaft angle of 108 hips was measured twice by three observers. The two-way analysis of variance method of Bland and Altman as outlined by Loder was used to determine the intra

A "millennium" update of all cases of slipped capital femoral epiphysis treated by bone graft epiphysiodesis between 1950 and 2000 was conducted. All cases were followed for at least 1 year to evaluate the occurrence of re-slippage, avascular necrosis (AVN), chondrolysis, or complications secondary to the surgical approach. This study adds 109 patients and 133 hips to the initial report for a total of 268 patients and 318 hips. The patients include 43 patients with 45 acute slips and 225 patients with 273 chronic slips. The results include three cases of AVN, six cases of re-slippage, one case

BACKGROUND: Familial inheritance of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is known. It has not been described in non-identical twins. A family where the mother and three of five siblings developed SCFE were investigated and managed.
METHODS: Anthropometric measurement consisted of height-weight ratios. Serum sex hormone levels and bone Gla Protein was measured. Bone mineral densities were evaluated.
RESULTS: The affected siblings had higher bodyweight percentiles. Other investigations were within normal limits.
CONCLUSION: The unfavourable height-to-weight ratio was one of the mainstays

The risk of contralateral slipping in slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) has been estimated to be 40-80% in follow-up examinations. Before age 50 years, 25% of the contralateral hips with untreated slipping showed arthrosis, some severe. In the same long-term follow-up, no hip with mild or moderate slipping treated with pinning in situ had developed severe arthrosis at that age, indicating the risk of arthrosis in the contralateral hip in SCFE can be reduced by prophylactic pinning. Prophylactic pinning also diminishes the need for repeated radiographical examination during the remaining

The results of treatment for severely slipped capital femoral epiphysis by biplanar wedge osteotomy of the femoral neck in 13 cases are presented. They were compared to the results quoted by both advocates and opponents of this method. The authors conclude that this method renders beneficial results but they depend greatly on surgical technique and experience.
