Development of a radiochromic film dosimetry readout system.

Radiochromic film is widely recognized for its high spatial resolution and ease of use in radiation dosimetry, but accurate and artifact-free readout remains a challenge. In this work, we evaluate and compare three different radiochromic film imaging systems: a conventional flatbed scanner, a diffuse light field and camera setup, and a custom-built scanning point source and detector system. We investigate each system's optical characteristics, imaging performance, and clinical utility, with a particular focus on small field dosimetry, where conventional systems often fall short. Our results hi

Magnetic slippery microcatheter with artificial cilia for low-friction interventions.

Medical catheters are essential in minimally invasive procedures, enabling precise navigation and treatment within complex anatomical structures. However, their rigidity and limited flexibility can exert excessive mechanical forces on fragile luminal tissues, causing abrasions, microtears, or perforations and increasing the risks of inflammation and other complications, ultimately compromising safety and efficacy. Inspired by foxtail grass, we developed a magnetically actuated liquid-infused slippery microcatheter (LISMC) with artificial cilia. Its soft magnetic cilia and hydrogel coating allo

A new system for custom helical mandibular distraction: a cadaver test.

Currently, internal mandibular distraction osteogenesis is performed with stock distractors that are either linear or circular. However, a recent in silico study showed that linear and circular distractions resulted in bone deformity, malocclusion, and condylar displacement, while custom helical distractors produced excellent outcomes. A system to design and manufacture custom helical distractors has recently been developed. An unpublished in vitro study showed excellent outcomes with custom helical devices manufactured using this system. However, it is unknown whether these appliances will wo

Barrier and protective effects of a newly developed medical device for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a clinical condition due to the reflux of stomach contents and leading either to erosive or non-erosive disease. Repeated exposure of esophagus to hydrochloric acid, pepsin, bile salts and pancreatic enzymes in gastric contents damages esophageal mucosa, causing inflammation and increased paracellular permeability. A possible therapy for gastroesophageal reflux disease should hinder gastroesophageal reflux and provide esophageal mucosal protection against all aggressive components. The medical device (Med) tested in this study was developed for th

Development of electromagnetic drop weight release mechanism for human occupied vehicle.

In a human-occupied vehicle (HOV), the drop weight mechanism is used to adjust the ascent/descent motion. In this paper, a new innovation has been developed through the effective integration of a permanent magnet and an electromagnet. The main advantage of this Electromagnetic Drop Weight Mechanism (EMDW) is that it requires power to be supplied at the time of drop weight (25 kg) cut off. From Response surface methodology (RSM) using desirability approach, the design criteria for EMDW System required to drop a 25 kg weight is the combination of 20 A, 18 NOT, 106 mm coil length and 24 V DC. Pulsed Field Ablation Using a Lattice-Tip Catheter for Treatment of Ventricular Tachycardias.

The inability to create durable, high-quality lesions in the ventricles has limited ventricular tachycardia (VT) ablation outcomes. With pulsed field ablation (PFA), a new modality offers the potential to overcome limitations of conventional, thermal ablation. The lattice-tip catheter's design makes it a promising and versatile tool for ventricular ablation. Preclinical studies have shown that PFA using this system can penetrate scar and fat, create deep lesions, and address difficult ablation targets. Clinical data are scarce but suggest acute feasibility and safety. More research is necessar

Comparative Evaluation of Pressure Distribution of Three Support Surfaces Used for Pressure Injury Prevention during Prolonged Surgeries.

Pressure injuries, also known as pressure ulcers, pose a serious health care concern for patients undergoing lengthy surgeries due to prolonged immobility while under anesthesia. The occurrence of pressure injuries can be costly and adversely impact patient outcomes, leading to increased morbidity, extended hospital stays, and a reduced quality of life. One preventative approach is to use engineered support surfaces designed to redistribute pressure, thereby reducing the risk of tissue damage. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of 3 different support surfaces to redistribute pressur

The "Aminometer" - a finger-sized prototype for total L-amino acid measurements from human serum.

The total pool of blood's serum circulating L-amino acids (ΣAA) is an underused biomarker that integrates muscle protein turnover, nutritional status and metabolic disorders. Despite increasing clinical relevance, current methods for quantifying ΣAA, including colorimetry/fluorimetry and chromatography, are laboratory-bound, slow, and unsuitable for decentralized or extreme environments such as space missions. We report a self-contained, portable, calibration-free prototype device - Aminometer - for rapid quantitative analysis of ΣAA concentration in 7.2 μL of blood serum within 33 min. The pr

A Soft Inflatable Cable-Driven Parallel Robot With a Variable Stiffness End-Effector for Advanced Interventional Endoscopy.

OBJECTIVE: This paper presents a cable-driven parallel robot (CDPR) with a variable stiffness end-effector for Advanced Interventional Endoscopy. METHODS: The CDPR consists of a soft inflatable scaffold that is made from plastic laminate sheets, capable of deploying into a hollow triangular prism. The end-effector comprises multiple units linked by two cables, which also actuate the rolling joint on the end-effector tip. Variable stiffness of the end-effector is achieved by adjusting the tensions in the two cables. RESULTS: Through teleoperated control tests, the mean manual tracking error o

A Variable Stiffness System for Impact Analysis in Collaborative Robotics Applications with FPGA-Based Force and Pressure Data Acquisition.

The integration of robots into collaborative environments, where they physically interact with humans, requires systems capable of ensuring both safety and performance. This work introduces the development of a Variable Stiffness Impact Testing Device (VSITD), designed to emulate physical human-robot interaction by replicating biomechanical properties such as muscle elasticity and joint compliance. The proposed system integrates a Variable Stiffness Mechanism (VSM) with a multi-sensor configuration that includes a high-resolution Force Sensitive Resistors (FSR) matrix, piezoelectric load cells

Novel, Integrated Tissue Retraction and Suction Device for Spinal Surgery.

Every year in the U.S., over 400,000 spinal fusion surgeries are performed to treat scoliosis, degenerative disk disease, and spinal stenosis. The dissection phase of the spinal fusion surgery relies on three handheld tools: a monopolar cautery, a Cobb elevator, and a suction. Despite having two operators, the reliance on four hands for only three tools makes the spinal exposure inefficient and time-consuming. Allowing one surgeon to operate all three devices to perform dissection on both sides greatly reduces the operation time, thereby alleviating health risks for both patients and surgeons.

User experience of lower extremity exoskeletons and its improvement methodologies: A narrative review.

In this review, user experience (UX) of recent lower limb exoskeletons (LLEs) and its improvement methodologies are investigated. First, statistics based on standardised and custom UX evaluations are presented. It is indicated that, LLE users have positive UX, especially in the aspects of safety, dimension and effectiveness. Further, overall, UX levels of ankle and hip-knee exoskeletons are higher than those of other exoskeleton types; unilateral LLEs have higher mean UX levels than that of the bilateral ones. Then, design practices for improving UX are studied; the focused points are burden r

Bio-inspired circular soft actuators for simulating defecation process of human rectum.

Soft robots have found extensive applications in the medical field, particularly in rehabilitation exercises, assisted grasping, and artificial organs. Despite significant advancements in simulating various components of the digestive system, the rectum has been largely neglected due to societal stigma. This study seeks to address this gap by developing soft circular muscle actuators (CMAs) and rectum models to replicate the defecation process. Using soft materials, both the rectum and the actuators were fabricated to enable seamless integration and attachment. We designed, fabricated, and tes

High Accuracy Localization for Miniature Ingestible Devices Using Mutual Inductance.

This article demonstrates an inductively coupled high-accuracy localization system for miniature ingestible devices. It utilizes an inductance double capacitances-series capacitance (LCC-S) compensation architecture that enables mutual inductance measurement at primary side that is positioned outside the human body and less constrained by power budget and size than the miniature ingestible. Depending on the secondary circuit architecture, only limited and simple cooperative measurements are needed from the ingestible secondary side, which saves power and area in the miniature device. The error

A digital approach to fabricating a custom holder for the attachment of a mandibular sensor of an optical jaw motion tracking system: A dental technique.

A digital approach to fabricating a custom holder to attach a mandibular sensor of an optical jaw motion tracking system is described. Typically, jaw motion tracking systems come with standard holders. However, additional chairside time is still required to adapt the holder's arm to the individual arch and securely attach the holder to the mandibular teeth. Moreover, the placement of the standard holder is problematic in patients with a deep vertical overlap or with short clinical crowns. This technique offers a digital approach to designing and fabricating a custom holder in situations where

Achieving near-zero particle generation by simplicity of design-A compliant-mechanism-based gripper for clean-room environments.

Lab Automation facilitates high-throughput processes and improves reproducibility and efficiency while removing human action, primary source of contaminating particles. Handling poses a risk of contamination due to close contact with the objects. We propose a novel gripper (CrocoGrip) relying on compliant mechanisms to reduce the amount of contaminating particles generated by the gripper rather than preventing their emission, the latter being the common approach in current grippers. Our novel gripper is actuated by linear solenoids and purely relies on deformation for its motion. As a result,
