Four Athenas - Europe's first female neurosurgeons.

In the early 20th century, a tumultuous era was yielding geopolitical and social change. Europe at large was undergoing redefinition of borders, political structures, and economies, while rebuilding societies after World War I. At the same time, neurosurgery was emerging as a new specialty, and women were allowed to study medicine for the first time in many European countries. These factors created a synergy, setting the stage for Europe's four first female neurosurgeons to emerge. In 1924, Germany's Alice Rosenstein began her neurosurgical career and contributed to the refinement of pneumoenc…

Organization of antibiotic stewardship in Europe: the way to go.

It is more than two decades ago that a European Union conference on "The Microbial Threat" hosted by the Danish Government in Copenhagen in September 1998 issued recommendations to encourage good practice in the use of antimicrobial agents and reduce inappropriate prescribing. Essential components of those recommendations were antimicrobial teams in hospitals and the use of feedback to prescribers as well as educational activities. Two decades later, important surveillance systems on both antimicrobial resistance as well as on antibiotic consumption are functioning at the European level and in…

Childhood overweight and obesity abatement policies in Europe.

Over the past two decades, a concerted effort to combat the rising tide of childhood overweight and obesity has taken shape. The World Healt … paper provides a snapshot of policies and measures aligned to these areas of action within the WHO European Region in order to encourage other countries to make similar efforts. Examples are drawn from Portugal (sugar-sweetened beverage tax, integrated nutrition strategy), the United Kingdom (soft drink levy, active commuting programs, urban design prin …

Comparison of Lyme Disease in the United States and Europe.

Lyme disease, or Lyme borreliosis, is the most common tickborne disease in the United States and Europe. In both locations, Ixodes species ticks transmit the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato bacteria species responsible for causing the infection. The diversity of Borrelia species that cause human infection is greater in Europe; the 2 B. burgdorferi s.l. species collectively responsible for most infections in Europe, B. afzelii and B. garinii, are not found in the United States, where most infections are caused by B. burgdorferi sensu stricto. Strain differences seem to explain some of the varia…

Cholera in travellers: improving vaccination guidance in Europe.

BACKGROUND: Cholera is endemic in ~50 countries worldwide and remains a disease associated with poverty, causing illness and death in the poorest and most vulnerable people. In travellers, cholera is considered a low-incidence disease, but the true impact on travellers is difficult to assess. Cholera vaccination may improve safety for certain European travellers at risk. Effective vaccines are available; however, vaccination recommendations in Europe vary considerably between countries. METHODS: In this review, a comparison of cholera vaccination recommendations from 29 advice reference bodie…

The Changing Spectrum of Sexually Transmitted Infections in Europe.

As long as 400 years ago, syphilitic ulcers and gonococcal discharge were observed in connection with sexual intercourse. War, poverty, and … ons (STIs) has been recognized worldwide. The number of reported cases of syphilis is increasing in Europe, especially in men having sex with men (MSM). Antibiotic resistance in several genital pathogens, such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Mycoplasma genitalium, causes therapeutic problems. Viral genital infections have become a therapeutic challenge, esp …

Canine Brucellosis: Insights Into the Epidemiologic Situation in Europe.

Brucella canis is one of many responsible pathogens of discospondylitis in dogs and infections require specific management. Little is known about the epidemiologic situation in Europe. The purpose of the study was to get insights into the occurrence of brucellosis in dogs in Europe. The database of a European veterinary laboratory was screened for Brucella positive samples. Additionally, medical records of a veterinary hospital in Germany were screened for diagnosis of discospondylitis and brucellosis. The laboratory received samples from 20 European countries for Brucella testing in dogs: 3.7…

Resurgence of pneumococcal meningitis in Europe and Northern America.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common pathogen causing bacterial meningitis. The routine use of multivalent conjugate pneumococcal vaccines has led to a decline of invasive pneumococcal disease caused by serotypes included in the vaccine serotypes. Recently, several reports have described a concomitant rise in the incidence of non-vaccine serotypes, suggesting serotype replacement. OBJECTIVE: We aim to review the effect of pneumococcal vaccination on the incidence of pneumococcal meningitis in Europe and northern America with a particular interest in serotype replacement. S…

Lyme neuroborreliosis and bird populations in northern Europe.

Many vector-borne diseases are transmitted through complex pathogen-vector-host networks, which makes it challenging to identify the role of … sis, and it is often responsible for the largest proportion of infected host-seeking tick nymphs in Europe. The bird-borne Borrelia garinii, though less prevalent in nymphal ticks, is more likely to cause Lyme neuroborreliosis, but whether B. garinii causes disseminated disease more frequently has not been documented. Based on extensive data of annual di …

Diversity of Cryptosporidium spp. in Apodemus spp. in Europe.

The genetic diversity of Cryptosporidium spp. in Apodemus spp. (striped field mouse, yellow-necked mouse and wood mouse) from 16 European countries was examined by PCR/sequencing of isolates from 437 animals. Overall, 13.7% (60/437) of animals were positive for Cryptosporidium by PCR. Phylogenetic analysis of small-subunit rRNA, Cryptosporidium oocyst wall protein and actin gene sequences showed the presence of Cryptosporidium ditrichi (22/60), Cryptosporidium apodemi (13/60), Cryptosporidium apodemus genotype I (8/60), Cryptosporidium apodemus genotype II (9/60), Cryptosporidium parvum (2/60)…

Hotspots of malignant pleural mesothelioma in Western Europe.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma, a highly invasive tumour, has been epidemiologically linked to an occupational or environmental exposure to asbestos. Although asbestos has been widely used in diverse industrial applications and in construction, some industrial sectors have been affected much more than others. The objective of this review was to describe the existence of clusters of malignant pleural mesothelioma in Western European countries, based on epidemiological studies published between 2000 and 2015. MEDLINE (PubMed) and Embase were searched for relevant studies on spatial clustering of…

The rise of the rosette agent in Europe: An epidemiological enigma.

International biodiversity assessments often overlook the role of emerging infectious pathogens in the decline of freshwater fish populations despite the many examples of emerging diseases in other more visible taxa on a global scale. Whilst the introduction of the rosette agent Sphaerothecum destruens in Europe remained an epidemiological enigma, recent findings have shown that this parasite arrived in Europe with the introduction of the healthy carrier Pseudorasbora parva from China nearly 60 years ago and its emergence went unnoticed for over 45 years despite its severe impact on European f…

Tick-borne encephalitis in Europe, 2012 to 2016.

Since 2012, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a notifiable in the European Union. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control annually collects data from 28 countries plus Iceland and Norway, based on the EU case definition. Between 2012 and 2016, 23 countries reported 12,500 TBE cases (Ireland and Spain reported none), of which 11,623 (93.0%) were confirmed cases and 878 (7.0%) probable cases. Two countries (Czech Republic and Lithuania) accounted for 38.6% of all reported cases, although their combined population represented only 2.7% of the population under surveillance. The annua…

Extension of the Avian Host Range of Collyriclosis in Europe.

We describe cases of collyriclosis in apodiform and passeriform birds in Portugal, Switzerland, and Germany. We extend the host range of Col … aphic range into Portugal and the potential debilitating nature of a parasite of migratory birds in Europe. However, given the rarity of cases, collyriclosis does not seem to present an important threat to migratory species preservation.

Paramphistomosis of Ruminants: An Emerging Parasitic Disease in Europe.

Whilst historically regarded as being of minor importance in European livestock, recent evidence suggests that the prevalence of paramphistomosis is greater than that of fasciolosis in parts of the UK. In order to address this emerging threat to ruminant farming systems, and associated risks for food security posed by rumen fluke infection, it is imperative that we develop a better understanding of the basic biology of this parasite and how it interacts with its ruminant host. In this Opinion article we review recent progress in tracking the spread of rumen fluke infection in Europe, and propo…
