The amplitude of the event-related potential P300 component is sensitive to aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Using a standard 20-electrode configuration, the P300 was measured during an "oddball" task in 14 young normal individuals (YN: 21-41 years), 11 elderly normal individuals (EN: 61-80 years), and 23 probable AD patients (AD: 63-93 years; NINCDS-ADRDA criteria). P300 latencies and amplitudes were measured at PZ. Additionally, algorithmic calculations were made from spline plots across the 11 central electrodes for P300 peak voltage latency and total field energy. The measured versus ca

Existing behavioral studies have suggested that individuals with early life stress usually show abnormal emotional processing. However, limited event-related brain potentials (ERPs) evidence was available to explore the emotional processes in children orphaned by parental HIV/AIDS ("AIDS orphans"). The current study aims to investigate whether there are behavioral and neurological obstacles in the recognition of emotional faces in AIDS orphans and also to further explore the processing stage at which the difference in facial emotion recognition exists. A total of 81 AIDS orphans and 60 non-orp

This study investigates the relationship between various target exposure signs and brain activation patterns by analyzing the EEG signals of 35 subjects observing four types of targets: well-camouflaged, with large color differences, with shadows, and of large size. Through ERP analysis and source localization, we have established that different exposure signs elicit distinct brain activation patterns. The ERP analysis revealed a strong correlation between the latency of the P300 component and the visibility of the exposure signs. Furthermore, our source localization findings indicate that exp

In this study we evaluate how cognitive load affects susceptibility to auditory signals. Previous research has used the frontal P3 (fP3) event related potential response to auditory novel stimuli as an index for susceptibility to auditory signals. This work demonstrated that tasks that induce cognitive load such as visual and manual tasks, reduced susceptibility. It is however unknown whether cognitive load without visual or manual components also reduces susceptibility. To investigate this, we induced cognitive load by means of the verb generation task, in which participants need to think abo

P300-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) provide an additional communication channel for individuals with communication disabilities. In general, P300-based BCIs need to be trained, offline, for a considerable period of time, which causes users to become fatigued. This reduces the efficiency and performance of the system. In order to shorten calibration time and improve system performance, we introduce the concept of a generic model set. We used ERP data from 116 participants to train the generic model set. The resulting set consists of ten models, which are trained by weighted linear discr

The P3 is an important event-related potential that can be used to identify neural activity related to the cognitive processes of the human brain. However, the relationships, especially the functional correlations, between resting-state brain activity and the P3 have not been well established. In this study, we investigated the relationships between P3 properties (i.e., amplitude and latency) and resting-state brain networks. The results indicated that P3 amplitude was significantly correlated with resting-state network topology, and in general, larger P3 amplitudes could be evoked when the re

Neurobiological studies have demonstrated that psychotherapy is able to alter brain function in adults, however little exists on this topic with respect to children. This waiting-list controlled investigation focused on therapy-related changes of the P300 and the late positive potential (LPP) in 8- to 13-year-old spider phobic girls. Thirty-two patients were presented with phobia-relevant, generally disgust-inducing, fear-inducing, and affectively neutral pictures while an electroencephalogram was recorded. Participants received one session of up to 4h of cognitive-behavioral exposure therapy.

OBJECTIVE: This review tests Ribot's classic twofold categorization of generalized amnesia (GA) into Type I, total loss of episodic memory, and Type II, additional more or less extensive loss of semantic and/or procedural memory. It also explores his law of regression, according to which, cast in modern terms, recovery of lost procedural and semantic memories precedes recovery of episodic memory, as well as reported aetiological factors.
METHOD: Clinically and formally assessed cases of GA, published since 1845, were surveyed and further analysed.
RESULTS: Over and above authentic episodic m

Nine healthy men (mean age, 22.2 years) participated in two experimental sessions cross-overed randomly in a double blind manner; one with a placebo and the other with 0.125 mg of brotizolam (BTZ) administered in the morning. Resting electroencephalogram and event-related potential under oddball paradigm was recorded before and 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 h after the administration. Mean 30-msec bin amplitude from 240 msec to 450 msec after the stimulus was compared between placebo and drug sessions in order to observe P300. Brotizolam reduced the amplitude of P300 at 6 h after administration. It was not

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: The aim of the study was to examine whether--like in severe head injuries--the endogenous evoked potential P300 is influenced by minor head injury (MHI) and how the eventual abnormalities develop within a follow-up period of 8 weeks after trauma. Therefore we examined the cognitive auditory evoked potential P300 (latency, amplitude), the neurologic state and the performance in psychometric testing (Mini-Mental-State, Number Connection test part A and B) in 15 patients within the first 24 hours as well as 1, 3 and 8 weeks after MHI. The P300 results were compared to the

BACKGROUND: P300 abnormalities indicate changes in information processing and are one of the most reliable biological markers of schizophrenia. We sought to investigate whether abnormalities in P300 (P3) or other event-related potentials are also present in subjects at ultra high risk (UHR) for developing psychosis and whether they are helpful in predicting transition to psychosis.
METHODS: The N1, N2, N2b, P2, and P3 amplitudes were assessed in 61 UHR subjects, of whom 18 subjects (30%) made a transition to psychosis over a 3-year follow-up period (UHR + T: age 20.4 years) and 43 (70%) did n

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) commonly co-occur and are associated with deficits in auditory processing and attention. To better understand the underpinnings of deficits in directed auditory attention, we examined whether individual PTSD symptom domains or mTBI severity were associated with distinct anomalies during early, middle, and late neural responses to auditory stimuli.
METHODS: The Clinician Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS-IV) and Minnesota Blast Exposure Screening Tool were used to evaluate symptoms of previously deployed U.S. c

Advisors typically receive two types of feedback: whether their advice is accepted and benefits the advisee. However, the effect of interpersonal distance on advisors' feedback responses remains unexplored. Therefore, to examine this association, we used an advice-giving task in which participants acted as advisors to either friends or strangers through event-related potentials (ERP). Participants received feedback reflecting whether their advice was accepted or rejected and the advisee's outcome (gains or losses). Participants' electroencephalograms were recorded when receiving feedback. Resu

OBJECTIVE: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is an increasingly concerning issue that is linked to a range of mental health problems. However, little is known about the potential neurophysiological mechanisms underlying risk decision-making in Major depressive disorder (MDD) patients with NSSI-the present study aimed to fill this important literature gap.
METHODS: A total of 81 MDD patients (with NSSI: n = 40, without NSSI: n = 41) and 44 matched healthy controls (HC) underwent a modified version of the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) while an electroencephalogram was recorded. Feedback-related negati

Brain mechanisms linked to incorrect response selections made under time pressure during cognitive task performance are poorly understood, particularly in adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Using subject-specific multimodal imaging (electroencephalogram, magnetic resonance imaging, behavior) during flanker task performance by a sample of 94 human adolescents (mean age = 15.5 years, 50% female) with varying degrees of ADHD symptomatology, we examined the degree to which amplitude features of source-resolved event-related potentials (ERPs) from brain-independent co
