Xylitol in toothpaste: is it effective in reducing the levels of Streptococcus mutans in high caries risk young children?

DESIGN: This study is an observational prospective longitudinal cohort study, following 102 children aged 1 to 12 months over a period of 24 months. At baseline, a dental examination was carried out to assess the number of carious lesions present using the ICDAS system, and a saliva sample was taken to assess the levels of Streptococcus mutans (SM) in saliva using the Dentocult SM saliva strip. Cohort caregivers received toothbrushing instruction and a 25% xylitol toothpaste tube for which they were instructed to use twice a day over a 3-month period, after which they returned to clinic at Pri

Fluoride and children's IQ: evidence of causation lacking.

DATA SOURCES: Human, animal, and in vitro studies. Extensive literature search of multiple bibliographic databases, trial registries, major grey literature sources and bibliographies of identified studies. STUDY SELECTION: The authors aimed to identify studies which could be used to determine the maximum safe level for fluoride in drinking water. To identify new studies published since a 2016 Australian review, the search period was 2016 to July 2021. Studies which evaluated the association between either naturally or artificially fluoridated water (any concentration) and any health outcomes

Efficacy of periodontal treatment modalities in Down syndrome patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The systematic review aimed to review the existing evidence, to identify and appraise the effectiveness of periodontal prevention and treatment modalities in individuals diagnosed with Down syndrome (DS) and to determine the estimates of the effects of implemented periodontal prevention and treatment strategies compared to chromosomally normal (CN) individuals. METHODOLOGY: The systematic review was conducted and reported in conformity with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) guidelines. The study protocol was registered in the Open Scien

PRO-biotics? Are pre- and probiotics a valuable adjunct to fluoridated toothpaste in the battle against dental decay?

DESIGN: An investigator and participant masked, parallel-group randomised control trial examining the tooth surfaces of 288 children aged 5-9 years (n = 141 in the intervention group, n = 147 in the control group). Children in the intervention group were provided a daily lozenge containing 2% arginine (prebiotic), Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei (probiotics). Children in the control group were provided with a placebo lozenge. Parents of participants were also provided with 1450 ppm fluoride toothpaste and advised to brush their children's teeth twice d

Does the use of antimicrobials in different periodontal treatment strategies result in better treatment outcomes? - A radiographic analysis.

DESIGN: The paper by Kubberød et al. is a single-centre, double-blinded, prospective randomised control trial, comparing the radiographic alveolar bone levels in patients with periodontal disease following different treatment protocols over a 5-year period. In total, 184 patient were recruited to the study, and 161 (87.5%) of the patients returned for follow up over a 5-year period. The patients underwent a 3-month, pre-treatment oral hygiene phase before being randomised to one of 4 treatment regimens: (i) same day full mouth disinfection + adjunctive metronidazole; (ii) same day full mouth d

Pretreatments to bonding on enamel and dentin disorders: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: This systematic review focuses on structural anomalies of enamel and dentin such as fluorosis (F), molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH), amelogenesis imperfecta (AI), dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI), osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), and X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH). These pathologies affect up to 31% of the population, posing challenges in the adhesion of direct restorations. The primary objective of this analysis is to examine the survival rate and/or bonding resistance of direct restorations on tissues affected by enamel and dentin disorders in humans. We aim to provide precis

DESIGN: The study by Chrepa et al. is a randomised, placebo-controlled, triple-arm, phase IIA clinical trial with double masking which investigates the effectiveness and safety of Cannabidiol (CBD) as an analgesic for acute dental pain. The intervention drug, Epidiolex is an FDA-approved CBD oral solution (100 mg/ml) derived from the cannabis plant. The psychoactive ingredient tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is not included. The maximum recommended daily dose of Epidiolex is 20 mg/kg. 64 patients with moderate-severe odontogenic pain participated in the study and REDCap software was utilised to ran

It is the name of the disease) measured using decayed-missing-filled surfaces (dmfs) index score. Relative excess risk due to interaction (PERI) was used to assess the interaction between breastfeeding and processed food consumption. RESULTS: Breastfeeding for prolonged periods was found to be associated with higher experience and prevalence of early childhood caries. Caries prevalence was higher in

Is the answer to reducing early childhood caries in your pocket?

DATA SOURCES: Electronic scientific databases Embase, CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Web of Science were systematically searched and restricted to articles published from 1996 onwards and limited to articles published in English. This was carried out following an initial scoping search using keywords conducted in PubMed. STUDY SELECTION: Original studies investigating the use of mobile phone applications as a delivery method of healthcare interventions to parents and caregivers with children ≤6 years of age were included. As this was a mixed-methods systematic review, studies that have quantit

Apical periodontitis and autoimmune diseases-should we be screening patients prior to therapy?

DESIGN: A single-centre retrospective case-control study from 2012-2020 comparing the prevalence of apical periodontitis (AP) in patients with autoimmune disorders (AD) against a control group of those without. The different medication groups commonly used for treatment of AD were included for comparison. CASE/CONTROL SELECTION: This study utilised patients' electronic records. These were anonymous. Patient sociodemographic variables were collected and compared. Two cases were removed from selection as they were being treated with dual biologic therapy. DATA ANALYSIS: Both the control group

Critical appraisal of confounding factors of observational studies on the association between dentofacial features and dental trauma in a Brazilian population.

AIMS/OBJECTIVES: Dental trauma is a highly prevalent dental emergency. Children and adolescents without inadequate lip coverage, increased overjet, and anterior open bite are associated with the occurrence of traumatic dental injuries. Observational studies do not allow the inference of causality, one of the reasons being: the potential confounding factors. Therefore, this review aimed to critically appraise the confounding factors considered in epidemiological studies that associate dentofacial features with the occurrence of dental trauma in Brazilian children and adolescents. METHODS: Stud
