Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in patients with iron deficiency anaemia.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate vestibular functions using cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMP) in patients with iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) and investigate the early detection of potential vestibular hypofunction. METHODS: In this prospective study, the cVEMP results of 34 adult patients diagnosed with IDA and with no vestibular symptoms were compared with those of 34 audiologically healthy controls. P1-N1 latency times, interpeak amplitudes, and amplitude asymmetry rates were analysed and compared between the groups. RESULTS: One hundred thirty-six ears

Corticobulbar Motor Evoked Potentials: A Systematic Review of Technical Variations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Corticobulbar motor evoked potentials (coMEPs) were introduced in 2005 as an alternative to direct stimulation and free running electromyography for continuous monitoring of the facial nerve during skull base surgery. The technique has been expanded for monitoring of multiple cranial nerves (CNs) and adapted across diverse pathologies. Nonetheless, broad adoption has lagged. This study aimed to understand the basis of this disparity by systematically mapping current practices and characterizing the variations in technical implementation and reporting of coMEPs. METH…

Weighted Hermite Variable Projection Networks for Classifying Visually Evoked Potentials.

The occipital cortex responds to visual stimuli regardless of a patient's level of consciousness or attention, offering a noninvasive diagnostic tool for both ophthalmologists and neurologists. This response signal manifests as a unique waveform referred to as the visually evoked potential (VEP), which can be extracted from the electroencephalogram (EEG) activity of a human being. We propose a trainable VEP representation to disentangle the underlying explanatory factors of the data. To enhance the learning process with domain knowledge, we present an innovative parameterization of classical H

Evaluation of Auditory Evoked Potentials in Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a recurrent demyelinating neuroinflammatory disorder of the central nervous system. This study aimed to evaluate the neural conduction and sound information processing in individuals with NMOSD, through the analysis of auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) and cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs). METHODS: Twenty-four individuals (9-21 years old) were distributed into two groups: the study group (SG), diagnosed with NMOSD, and the control group, healthy individuals. Their ABRs and CAEPs were evaluated, and the results were exa…

TMS-evoked potentials provide novel neurophysiological features of Tourette syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder associated with abnormal activation of the cortico-striatal-thalamo-cortical circuits and dopaminergic system. We sought to examine changes in neurotransmission relating to cortical excitation/inhibition of TS by measuring TMS-evoked potentials (TEPs) of selected networks. METHODS: Thirty-three adult TS patients and 18 healthy controls underwent evaluation of symptom severity using the YGTSS (tics), PUTS (premonitory urge), Y-BOCS (OCD), CAARS (ADHD), BDI (depression), and BAI (anxiety). TMS-EEG was performed to …

Long-Latency Auditory Evoked Potentials in Adults with Williams Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Williams syndrome (WS) is a genetic, multisystemic, neurodevelopmental disorder, in which studies have demonstrated the presence of auditory deficits such as conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, cochlear weakness, and subclinical signs of hearing impairment. However, few studies have assessed this population's central auditory system. PURPOSE: To analyze long-latency auditory evoked potential (LLAEP) in adults with WS and compare them with those obtained from neurotypical individuals with no hearing complaints. RESEARCH DESIGN: A cross-sectional observational study with sub

Frequency-domain analysis of transient visual evoked potentials in schizophrenia.

PURPOSE: Frequency-domain measures were applied to characterize neural deficits in individuals with schizophrenia using transient visual evoked potentials (tVEP). These measures were compared with conventional time-domain measures to elucidate underlying neurophysiological mechanisms and examine the value of frequency analysis. METHODS: Four frequency bands of activity identified in previous work were explored with respect to magnitude (spectral power), timing (phase), a combined measure, magnitude-squared coherence (MSC), and compared to amplitudes and times of prominent deflections in the r…

Pre-movement gating of somatosensory evoked potentials in Tourette syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurobehavioral disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. Simple tics are purposeless involuntary movements that spontaneously resolve during middle adolescence. Complex tics appear to be semi-voluntary movements that may become intractable when associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Sensory tics or urges preceded by tics suggest sensorimotor processing impairment in TS. We aimed to clarify its pathophysiology by exploring the pre-movement gating (attenuation) of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs). METHODS: We examined 42 patients…

Visual Evoked Potentials for the Detection of Diabetic Retinal Neuropathy.

Visual evoked potentials (VEP) are visually evoked signals that extract electroencephalographic activity in the visual cortex that can detect retinal ganglion cells, optic nerves, chiasmal and retrochiasmal dysfunction, including optic radiations, and the occipital cortex. Because diabetes causes diabetic retinopathy due to microangiopathy and neuropathy due to metabolic abnormalities and intraneural blood flow disorders, assessment of diabetic visual pathway impairment using VEP has been attempted. In this review, evidence on the attempts to assess the visual pathway dysfunction due to abnorm…

Asymmetric Ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials in Pediatric Vestibular Migraine.

OBJECTIVE: Although ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMP) abnormalities have been associated with vestibular migraine (VM) in adults, no studies have evaluated this in pediatric patients with VM. oVEMP asymmetry with normal cervical VEMP (cVEMP) findings may be a reliable VM biomarker in adults. We characterize VEMP results among pediatric patients with VM and benign recurrent vertigo of childhood (BRVC), a migraine precursor, and compare these results with VEMP findings from pediatric patients with nonmigrainous vestibular diagnoses. METHODS: Four hundred seventy-four pediatri

Visual Evoked Potentials to Monitor Myelin Cuprizone-Induced Functional Changes.

The visual system is one of the most accessible routes to study the central nervous system under pathological conditions, such as in multiple sclerosis (MS). Non-invasive visual evoked potential (VEP) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) were used to assess visual function and neuroretinal thickness in C57BL/6 taking 0.2% cuprizone for 7 weeks and at 5, 8, 12, and 15 days after returning to a normal diet. VEPs were significantly delayed starting from 4 weeks on cuprizone, with progressive recovery off cuprizone, becoming significant at day 8, complete at day 15. In contrast, OCT and neurofil

Diagnosing Myasthenia Gravis With Repetitive Ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials.

Timely and accurate diagnosis of myasthenia gravis, particularly in patients with fluctuating, isolated ocular involvement, remains challenging. Serological antibody testing and repetitive nerve stimulation of peripheral muscles usually have low sensitivity in these patients. Edrophonium testing may cause adverse events, single-fiber electromyography (SFEMG) is time-consuming and both tests are often unavailable outside specialized institutions. Repetitive ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (roVEMP) stimulation has recently been introduced to facilitate the diagnosis of myasthenia gra

Motor Evoked Potentials in Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia-A Systematic Review.

Background: Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP) is a slowly progressive neurodegenerative disorder with no disease modifying treatment. Potential therapeutic approaches are emerging and large-scale clinical drug trials for patients with HSP are imminent. A sensitive biomarker to measure the drug efficacy in these trials is required. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) are a potential biomarker for HSP as they assess the central motor pathways and can be standardized with set protocols and guidelines. Objectives: We performed a systematic review to investigate the utility of MEPs as a diagnostic and…

[Early acoustic evoked potentials in patients with "small" vestibular schwannomas].

BACKGROUND: The prognostic potential of click-evoked early acoustic evoked potentials (EAEP) for vestibular schwannoma (VS) diagnostics is considered insufficient for tumors small than approximately <1.5 cm in diameter. However, up until now, the derivations at higher sound pressure levels have mainly been used for EAEP evaluation. The aim of this study was to examine whether registered EAEP are more sensitive to pathological changes at low sound pressure levels and with smaller tumors. METHODS: Comparative examinations (pair-matched) were conducted with 34 patients. An appropriate patient wi…

Assessing auditory evoked potentials of wild harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena).

Testing the hearing abilities of marine mammals under water is a challenging task. Sample sizes are usually low, thus limiting the ability to generalize findings of susceptibility towards noise influences. A method to measure harbor porpoise hearing thresholds in situ in outdoor conditions using auditory steady state responses of the brainstem was developed and tested. The method was used on 15 live-stranded animals from the North Sea during rehabilitation, shortly before release into the wild, and on 12 wild animals incidentally caught in pound nets in Denmark (inner Danish waters). Results i
