Isoenzyme electrophetic characterization of Leishmania major, the causative agent of zoonotic cutaneous Leishmaniasis in North and West Saudi Arabia.

Several expeditions were carried out to four localities (Al-Madinah Almona-warah, Tabouk region, Al-Jouf and Northern Frontiers regions) in Northern and Western Saudi Arabia for sampling zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) cases from patients and rodents. Biopsy samples were collected from 51 patients complaining of skin lesions, most of which (40 or 78.4%) proved to be ZCL. Amastigotes were detected in 33 patients (64.7%), but only 30 (58.9%) gave successful growth of promastigotes in the culture media. The positive cases were Saudis 14(35%) and non-Saudis 26 (65%). Five species of rodents…

Changes in body composition and average daily energy expenditure of men and women during arduous extended polar travel.

Weight and skin-fold measurements were made at five-day intervals during a 47-day expedition by six men and three women from the edge of the sea ice to the South Pole. From these, together with detailed manual records of the nutrition for individual participants, the average daily energy expenditure was determined before and after a resupply at approximately mid-point of the expedition. For all participants body weight fell during the expedition with the overall loss being much smaller for the three female participants (-4.0, -4.0, -4.4kg) than for the male participants, (mean±sd) -8.6±2.0kg.

Charles Darwin's impressions of New Zealand and Australia, and insights into his illness and his developing ideas on evolution.

Charles Darwin visited New Zealand in December 1835, and Australia from January until March 1836, on the return portion of his voyage around the world in HMS Beagle. Despite the shortness of these visits, he retained an interest in these countries throughout his life, maintaining correspondence and receiving many biological specimens. His experiences in these places influenced his thinking on evolution, particularly on the evolution of man. Aspects of his health recorded during this part of the voyage support a new hypothesis for the diagnosis of the illness that Darwin endured for most of his

Fighting the 'microbe of sporting mania': Australian science and Antarctic exploration in the early 20th century.

The 'Heroic Age' of Antarctic exploration, which occurred during the first 15 years of the 20th century, captured headlines around the world. Australia was no exception, especially as Australian scientists played important roles in several expeditions. Through participation in the British Antarctic Expedition of 1907-1909, two Australian scientists - T.W. Edgeworth David (1858-1934) and Douglas Mawson (1882-1958) - became genuine national heroes, mainly through being members of the first party to reach the South Magnetic Pole area. At a superficial level, the vehicle of Antarctic exploration p…

[The 70th anniversary of discovery of tick-borne encephalitis. A path to true history].

The discovery of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in the Far East of the USSR in 1937 is marked by investigators' heroism and tragedies--diseases in the members of the expedition and deaths when the first vaccine was designed in 1938. The head of the expedition L. A. Zilber and two specialists were arrested on a charge of subversive activities--spreading Japanese encephalitis in the guise of discovering a new virus. The paper presents the archival records and recollections of the members of the far-eastern expedition, which specify the history of TBE discovery.

Energy balance in women during polar trekking-The POWER study.

Polar expeditions pose a significant challenge, contributing to a substantial energy deficit. However, few data exist on nonprofessional individuals, and none of them have investigated the regulation of energy balance in female participants during an Arctic expedition. Eleven nonathlete female adults who reached the North Pole by ski in full autonomy were studied. Before and the day after the expedition, resting metabolic rate (RMR) was measured by indirect calorimetry, and fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) by bioelectric impedance. Total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) and activity-relate…

Red Sea Opisthobranchia 5: new species and new records of chromodorids from the Red Sea (Heterobranchia, Nudibranchia, Chromodorididae).

This is the fifth publication describing species of sea slug heterobranchs, originally based on collections from the Red Sea by the author on four expeditions carried out in 1983 and 1990, with the addition of specimens subsequently collected by underwater photographers who were stimulated by the book "Sea Slugs of the Red Sea". So much material has been amassed that only the new species and new Red Sea records of chromodorids are described in this paper, with an appendix listing specimens of previously recorded species. Three new species are described in detail and illustrated, belonging to t…

Military Officers, Tropical Medicine, and Racial Thought in the Formation of the West India Regiments, 1793-1802.

The article examines the establishment and growth between 1793 and 1802 of the West India Regiments, British army corps manned by slaves of African descent and commanded by European officers. Focusing on the medical history of British military operations in the West Indies, the article demonstrates that the rationale behind the regiments was medical, but that the impetus for them came from senior military commanders rather than from the medical practitioners whose writings are usually privileged in the historiography. The senior officers who commanded the West Indian expeditions in the French …

Optimal excision time for burn injuries of over 20% total body surface area: a retrospective review.

OBJECTIVE: While early excision of burn wounds is known to improve outcomes, the precise optimal timing within the early period remains unclear. A previous study by the authors suggests possible superiority in outcomes associated with immediate/expedited excision. This study aims to assess whether there is a difference in outcomes if initial excision is performed immediately (<24 hours), expedited (24-72 hours), or early (3-6 days) in adults with burns-related injuries of >20% total body surface area (TBSA). METHOD: The authors performed a retrospective review of adults admitted to the Johns

Cerebral perfusion and psychometric testing after exposure to high altitude in the mountains.

Exposure to hypobaric hypoxia is known to cause reductions in mental performance and decision-making and it has been reported that these effects are not fully reversed following descent from altitude. Eight climbers had cerebral perfusion scans performed and undertook a battery of psychometric tests prior to, and upon return from, an expedition to climb the eleventh highest mountain in the world, Gasherbrum 1. No decrements were found in either their performance on the psychometric tests nor to their cerebral perfusion following the expedition. Two subjects had significant cerebral perfusion a

Bivalve Shell Utilization by Juvenile Octopus vulgaris in Sandy Substrates.

The early life stages of Octopus vulgaris face significant challenges in sandy environments, where shelter is limited and predation risk is high. This study examines how juvenile octopuses adapt to these conditions, focusing on their use of empty bivalve shells as shelters. Between May 2022 and June 2023, through four SCUBA diving expeditions in the Cíes Islands, NW Spain, nine juvenile octopuses were found inhabiting bivalve shells. The juveniles preferentially selected shells that fit their body size, providing protection and minimizing exposure. They manipulated the shells for security and …

Social isolation during COVID-19 lockdown impairs cognitive function.

Studies examining the effect of social isolation on cognitive function typically involve older adults and/or specialist groups (e.g., expeditions). We considered the effects of COVID-19-induced social isolation on cognitive function within a representative sample of the general population. We additionally considered how participants 'shielding' due to underlying health complications, or living alone, performed. We predicted that performance would be poorest under strictest, most-isolating conditions. At five timepoints over 13 weeks, participants (N = 342; aged 18-72 years) completed online ta…

A systematic review of the cerebrovascular adaptations following exposure to spaceflight or ground-based analogs: lessons from human and animal studies.

Human space exploration is rapidly advancing, with long-term expeditions becoming more common. Long-term space missions introduce prolonged exposure to microgravity and ionizing radiation, which elicit stress responses throughout many organ systems. As the cerebrovascular system is responsible for regulating blood flow to the brain, it is imperative to understand the effects of the space environment on the cerebrovascular system. Cerebrovascular alterations are also linked to neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, glaucoma, and stroke. This systematic review ev…
