Ulcerative keratitis is one of the most common vision-threatening diseases of the horse. Successful therapy, however, can be achieved in the majority of cases provided the diagnosis is made early and the treatment is specific for the disease. This article reviews the pathophysiology, clinical signs, and contemporary medical and surgical approaches to bacterial and fungal ulcerative keratitis in the horse.

Flaviviruses are emerging arthropod-borne viruses that cause severe endemic infections and epidemics on a global scale. Recent Zika virus outbreaks have highlighted a significant link between the virus and ocular abnormalities, increasing interest in the pathogenesis of Flaviviruses. Flavivirus pathogenesis involves a complex interplay between viral replication and immune responses, leading to a wide spectrum of human diseases. Flavivirus infections can cause ocular complications that are usually self-limiting but can result in irreversible visual impairment and vision loss. These complication

Gross examination of globes under the dissecting microscope plays an important role in cases where clinical examination was limited, i. e., within the anterior segment of the eye, the back of the iris and the ciliary body. Anomalies, degenerations, tumors, inflammations and traumatic changes occurring in this region are demonstrated macroscopically.

Two and half years after a circling buckle operation in which two Supra-mid sutures and a solid silicone explant were employed, a Pseudomonas infection developed around the explant and progressed to the inner eye. Removal of all implanted foreign material and treatment with Rifamicin saved the eye. The relevant literature on infection following sclero-plastic procedures is reviewed, and the pathogenesis of the late infections is discussed.

Red eye is the cardinal sign of ocular inflammation. The condition is usually benign and can be managed by primary care physicians. Conjunctivitis is the most common cause of red eye. Other common causes include blepharitis, corneal abrasion, foreign body, subconjunctival hemorrhage, keratitis, iritis, glaucoma, chemical burn, and scleritis. Signs and symptoms of red eye include eye discharge, redness, pain, photophobia, itching, and visual changes. Generally, viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are self-limiting conditions, and serious complications are rare. Because there is no specific diagn

Fusarium keratitis is a destructive eye infection that is difficult to treat and results in poor outcome. In tropical and subtropical areas, the infection is relatively common and associated with trauma or chronic eye diseases. However, in recent years, an increased incidence has been reported in temperate climate regions. At the German National Reference Center, we have observed a steady increase in case numbers since 2014. Here, we present the first German case series of eye infections with Fusarium species. We identified Fusarium isolates from the eye or eye-related material from 22 patient…

Post-traumatic endophthalmitis is an uncommon yet devastating complication of an open globe injury. Risk factors include presence of an intraocular foreign body (IOFB), lens rupture, delayed primary globe repair, rural trauma, and trauma with contaminated objects. Visual prognosis in post-traumatic endophthalmitis is affected by the virulence of the microbe, the presence of a retinal break or detachment, the timing of treatment, the presence or absence of an IOFB, and the extent of initial injury. Treatment should be started emergently with systemic and intravitreal antibiotics. In the setting

BACKGROUND: Clinical data have shown that tick-borne diseases caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Bartonella spp., Coxiella burnetii, and Rickettsia spp. can affect the central nervous system, including the eye. The aim of this study was to establish a relationship between the incidence of cataract and evidence of bacterial infections transmitted by ticks.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fluid with lenticular masses from inside of the eye and blood from 109 patients were tested by PCR and sequencing. Sera from patients and the control group were subjected to serological tests to search specific

BACKGROUND: Clostridium perfringens is an uncommon pathogen in endophthalmitis, causing rapid destruction of ocular tissues. Clostridium perfringens infection typically occurs after penetrating injury with soil-contaminated foreign bodies.
CASE REPORT: Here, we describe the case of a 17-year-old male who sustained a penetrating injury with a metallic intraocular foreign body and who rapidly developed severe C. perfringens panophthalmitis with orbital cellulitis. He was managed by systemic and intravitreal antibiotics, resulting in preservation of the globe, but a poor visual outcome.

A case of anaerobic orbital cellulitis secondary to intraorbital wood and an approach to management are presented. Retained foreign bodies should be suspected in all penetrating orbital injuries involving wood. Computed tomography (CT) should be performed to delineate the location and size of any foreign body and to determine damage to adjacent structures. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is useful in certain circumstances. Orbital infection should be anticipated and broad-spectrum antibiotic cover (including anaerobes) provided. Surgical intervention should be undertaken to remove any retaine

BACKGROUND: The AIDS database at Fairfield Hospital, Melbourne, maintains information on eye pathology as identified by the three visiting ophthalmologists. Patients underwent an eye consultation: if they had ocular symptoms; if signs were seen on direct ophthalmoscopy by physicians; or when their CD4+ve cell count fell below 50/microL. The first AIDS-associated eye signs were identified in mid-1984. In the subsequent decade, 3257 patients in Victoria tested positive for HIV, and 845 of the 1123 who developed AIDS were treated at Fairfield Hospital.
METHODS: We undertook a retrospective revie

The author reports an epidemic of adeno- and enteroviral eye infections at an overseas military complex in the third quarter of 1981. A similar epidemic was reported by the Center for Disease Control, Atlanta, GA to also have occurred in Florida, Latin America, and North Carolina at approximately the same time. The differential diagnosis between epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, pharyngoconjunctival fever, acute hemorrhage conjunctivitis and Chlamydial infections is described. Epidemiology and management of these widely seen ocular infections are also discussed.

BACKGROUND: Cryptococcosis is one of the most frequent fungal eye infections in patients with immunosuppression. Currently, treatment approaches for non-meningeal, non-pulmonary cryptococcosis are based on those used for cryptococcal meningitis or pneumonia.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a rare case of non-meningeal, non-pulmonary cryptococcosis with clinical manifestations limited to one eye of a cadaveric kidney transplant recipient with chronic-active antibody-mediated rejection. Typical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatments, including antifungal therapies, adjunctive therapies, and im…
