Genetic landscape of FOXC2 mutations in lymphedema-distichiasis syndrome: Different mechanism of pathogenicity for mutations in different domains.

Lymphedema-dissociated syndrome (LDS), of which the pathogenesis is not fully understood, afflicts many patients. In this study, we investigated the effect of FOXC2 gene loss-of-function on the development of LDS disease. Two Han Chinese families with LDS were recruited in this study, pathogenic mutations were identified by Sanger sequencing. Reverse-transcription PCR, subcellular localization, dual fluorescein enzymes, and other in vitro experiments were used to study the functional effects of eight FOXC2 mutations. Two pathogenic FOXC2 duplication mutations (c.930_936dup and c.931-937dup) we

Essential trichomegaly: case report.

The present study reports two cases of symptomatic essential trichomegaly. Trichomegaly may develop in various diseases, including anorexia nervosa, hypothyroidism, pregnancy, pretibial myxedema, systemic lupus erythematosus, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, and uveitis. The exact incidence trichomegaly is unknown, and the condition remains sporadically reported. Two cases of symptomatic trichomegaly without any associated systemic disorder are presented in this paper.

Congenital distichiasis treated by a time-based cryosurgical technique--a case report.

Congenital distichiasis is a rare eyelid anomaly usually running in a family with some systemic disorders. Isolated congenital distichiasis is very rare. A very rare case of sporadic congenital distichiasis with symmetrical four-lid involvement is reported here. Detailed ophthalmic and systemic examinations failed to reveal any other abnormality. Various modalities of surgical techniques are tried to treat this difficult condition. It was treated by eyelid splitting and double freeze-thaw cryotherapy with anterior lamellar recession but no thermocouple was used. This simple modified technique,

The management of trachomatous trichiasis.

Trachoma is the cause of one-quarter of world blindness. Corneal damage from trachoma is related to trichiasis, which may affect over 10% of adults in endemic communities. Relief of trichiasis is believed to prevent corneal damage and the provision of community-based lid surgery is a central strategy for trachoma control programs. This strategy is weakened by the dearth of information on the effectiveness of different trichiasis procedures. A systematic review of trichiasis surgery is presented and reports of treatment efficacy are reviewed. Conclusions are drawn as to which procedures seem mo

Surgery for trachoma in Burma.

The problem of trachoma in Burma is presented. For its major sight-threatening complication of trichiasis a surgical procedure is described which is simple, effective, economical, and without any cosmetic blemish. With this procedure 1861 cases of different grades of trichiasis were operated upon at the Eye, ENT Hospital, Rangoon, with 528 cases followed up at 1 year. The results are entirely satisfactory when the operations are performed for first and second degree trichiasis, and for trichiasis of our third degree grading the success rate is 95%.

Generation of human induced pluripotent stem cell line from peripheral blood of patient with lymphedema-distichiasis syndrome.

Lymphedema-distichiasis syndrome (LDS) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder associated with mutations in forkhead box C2 (FOXC2) gene, critical for lymphatic endothelial cell (LEC) differentiation. LDS patients suffer from swelling of limbs (lymphedema) due to excessive lymph accumulation and are characterized by the presence of additional row of eyelashes (distichiasis). Here, we generated human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) from LDS patient-derived peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). LDS hiPSC line allows in vitro modeling and investigation of the molecular mechanisms …

Application of bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03% for the treatment of eyebrow hypotrichosis: series of ten cases.

In December 2008, bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03% was approved in the United States for the treatment of hypotrichosis of the eyelashes. Since then, there have been several reports in the literature on the off-label use of bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03% for the treatment of thinning in other hair bearing areas, such as in the eyebrows and in the scalp. Herein, a prospective pilot study is presented in which bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03% is evaluated for helping to re-grow hair in the eyebrow region of ten female patients.

Hereditary hypotrichosis simplex of the scalp.

We report on a female aged 13 years, whose scalp hair began to disappear at the age of 9 years, leaving only sparse wispy hairs in the parietal-occipital region. Eyelashes, eyebrows and body hair were unaffected. There were no signs of ectodermal dysplasia on the skin, nails, teeth and eyes nor other congenital abnormalities. The family pedigree showed 15 relatives similarly affected according to an autosomal dominant mode of transmission. Clinical, genetic, histological and ultrastructural aspects led to a diagnosis of hereditary hypotrichosis simplex of the scalp (Toribio-Quiñones type).

Ectoparasitic infestation of the lashes.

Phthirus pubis, commonly known as the crab louse, has as its habitat the pubic and inguinal regions of the body. Transfer between hosts is most commonly a result of sexual contact. On occasion, Phthirus pubis will leave its usual seat of predilection and infest other hair-bearing body parts. When infestation of the eyelashes occurs, it is known as phthiriasis palpebrarum. The case presented is an example of phthiriasis palpebrarum in a young female, apparently contracted as a result of transfer from the genital region of an affected male by hand contact.

The action of prostaglandins on ciliary hypertrichosis: a case report of pachydermoperiostosis.

Pachydermoperiostosis or primary hypertropic osteoarthropathy is a rare hereditary disorder that was first described in 1868. It is characterized by digital clubbing, pachydermia (thickening of the facial skin and/or scalp), and periostosis (swelling of periarticular tissue and subperiosteal new bone formation). We report a case of a patient with the complete form of the disease, and with a unique appearance of the hair shaft and eyelashes. The authors propose a possible mechanism to justify the abnormalities observed in the patient's hair shafts regarding the metabolism of prostaglandins and …
