It is crucial and clinically relevant to clarify the homing efficiency and retention of stem cells in different implanting strategies of cell therapy for various injuries. However, the need for a tool for investigating the mechanisms is still unmet. We herein introduce multi-modal BaGdF5:Yb,Tm nanoparticles as a nanoprobe to label adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) and detect the homing behavior with a micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) imaging technique. The migration of cells injected locally or intravenously, with or without a chemokine, CXCL 12, was compared. A higher homing efficiency o

Fireworks injuries can result in devastating cutaneous burns and may be further complicated in the head and neck region by the presence of specialized deeper structures. In the United States, the head and neck remain the most commonly injured sites, with the majority of these injuries constituting burns. We present an adult patient who suffered an accidental right cheek burn injury and went on to experience a complex pattern of findings including pneumomediastinum, facial nerve palsy, and sialocele formation.

Delayed facial nerve weakness secondary to head injury is rare. The mechanism of immediate facial nerve paralysis is obvious, however, the delayed presentation remains disputed. We report a 58-year-old gentleman who presents 6 days after being discharged following head trauma with a 2-day history of facial nerve paralysis (House-Brackmann grade 6). Computed tomography (CT) head showed a minimally displaced longitudinal squamous temporal bone fracture initially with nerve conduction studies and electromyograpy revealing a relative reduction in left facial motor amplitudes with moderate recruitm

BACKGROUND: Facial transplantation introduced a paradigm shift in the reconstruction of extensive facial defects. Although the feasibility of the procedure is well established, new challenges face the field in its second decade.
METHODS: The authors' team has successfully treated patients with extensive thermal and ballistic facial injuries with allotransplantation. The authors further validate facial transplantation as a reconstructive solution for irreparable facial injuries. Following informed consent and institutional review board approval, a partial face and double jaw transplantation wa…

IMPORTANCE: Functional and anatomical outcomes after surgical repair of facial nerve injury may be improved with the addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG) to direct suture neurorrhaphy. The application of PEG has shown promise in treating spinal nerve injuries, but its efficacy has not been evaluated in treatment of cranial nerve injuries.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether PEG in addition to neurorrhaphy can improve functional outcomes and synkinesis after facial nerve injury.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND SUBJECTS: In this animal experiment, 36 rats underwent right facial nerve transection and neurorr

PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare the optic nerve sheath diameters (ONSDs) of facial trauma patients as observed on facial CT and brain CT, and to evaluate the predictive performance of ONSD as seen on facial CT for traumatic brain injury (TBI).
METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 262 patients with facial trauma who underwent both facial CT and brain CT. Two reviewers independently measured ONSD at 3 mm (ONSD3) and 10 mm behind the globe (ONSD10) for each patient on both CT scans. Final CT reports with clinical progress notes were used as the reference standard. Statistically, multivariate lo

Iatrogenic lip injury is a rather common complication after facial bone surgery, but is usually treated lightly by the surgeon compared with other more severe functional complications. However, these injuries can have permanent sequelae and can therefore be a reason for patient dissatisfaction, especially after cosmetic surgery. Intraoperative lip injuries during facial bone surgery are usually caused by heat-generating surgical instruments or forced traction on the operative fields. The authors have applied a special technical strategy using a hydrocolloid dressing material to avoid these int

CASES: Traumatic intracranial aneurysm following blunt head injury is uncommon but can be induced by extension of skull base fracture and causes unexpected hemorrhagic complications. We present two cases of traumatic intracranial aneurysm in the paraclinoid area that was revealed by delayed massive epistaxis. Lack of initial neurological deficits omitted screening for cerebrovascular injury.
OUTCOME: Internal trapping was carried out using endovascular techniques in both cases, with extracranial-intracranial bypass in one case. No recurrent bleeding occurred in either case.

We are presenting the case of a patient who developed a parotid sialocele after sustaining a facial injury. The patient was treated by creating a controlled intraoral fistula that drained saliva into the oral cavity and led to resolution of the sialocele. Articles were reviewed for discussion of current treatment methods in managing parotid sialocele and fistula. The articles reported successful management of parotid sialocele and fistula using both nonsurgical and surgical methods. Treatment depends upon the location of the injury (ductal injury vs. parenchymal injury) and the time of treatme

BACKGROUND: Treatment of facial fractures in the setting of open-globe injuries poses a management dilemma because of the often disparate treatment priorities of multidisciplinary trauma teams and the lack of prognostic data regarding visual outcomes.
METHODS: Patients in the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Registry sustaining facial fractures with concomitant open-globe injuries from January of 1998 to August of 2010 were identified. Odds ratios were calculated to identify demographic and clinical variables associated with blindness, and multivariate regression analysis was performed.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Many pharmacological agents have shown successful results in experimental crush injury of the peripheral nerve. To date, therapeutic effect of ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) on the peripheral nerve crush injury of rats has been rarely reported, moreover, neuroprotective effect on the facial nerve crush injury has not been reported.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospective functional recovery, using a vibrissae movement and electrophysiological analysis of recovery 4 weeks after the facial nerve crush in adult rats, and comparison with randomized intraperitoneal injection of e

Following injury or stress of any type, cells undergo a stress response, involving the cessation of general protein synthesis and the up-regulation of heat shock proteins (HSP), which have been implicated in promoting cell survival and repair. In a variety of neuronal injury models, including the hamster facial motoneurone (FMN) model, steroid hormones augment regeneration and are neuroprotective. We have previously shown that facial nerve axotomy induces expression of HSP70 (HSP70) and/or up-regulates constitutively expressed HSP70 (HSC70) mRNA in axotomised hamster FMN and that testosterone

In the field of neuroimmunology, an emerging area of research involves the role that the immune system plays in neural injury and repair. Such immune:neural interactions may involve both neuroprotective and neurodestruction actions. To begin to address the compelling, and clinically relevant, issue of how the immune system impacts neural reparative processes, we combined the well described facial nerve injury paradigm, a simple neural injury model, with various immunodeficient mouse models, in order to delineate the contributing immune cells/factors involved in neural injury and repair. We hav

Accelerated axon regeneration is of paramount importance for improved functional recovery after motor nerve injuries. Following injury of their axon neurones undergo a series of changes, termed the axon reaction, aimed at survival and regeneration of a new axon. We and others have found that early treatment with exogenous polyamines can enhance neuronal survival and accelerate the rate of axon regeneration and functional recovery after sympathetic and motor (sciatic) nerve injuries. Results of the present study corroborate the previous findings and demonstrate that after facial nerve injury in

The frequency of frontal paralysis due to surgical trauma of the temporo-frontal nerve seems to be increasing due to the growing number of operations in the temporo-frontal area and the complexity of surgical techniques. A series of 20 anatomical dissections demonstrates the course of the temporo-frontal nerve. Frontal myomectomy of the healthy side to allow facial equilibration seems to us to be the best technique of reconstructive surgery for definitive frontal paralysis.
