The authors describe the clinical and electrophysiologic findings in a patient with synkinesis between muscles innervated by the facial and trigeminal nerves after resection of a trigeminal schwannoma. Conventional facial nerve conduction and blink reflex studies were normal. Stimulation of the supraorbital and facial nerves elicited reproducible responses in the masseter and pterygoid muscles, confirming a peripheral site of aberrant regeneration of the facial and trigeminal nerves.

Introduction: Parotid gland neoplasms represent a heterogenous group of tumors, either benign or malignant. The diagnosis and management of parotid gland tumors is complicated by their relative infrequency and their diverse biologic behavior.
Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the epidemiological characteristics, the recurrence rates and the surgical approach employed for parotid gland tumors in Northern Greece.
Material and methods: This is a single-center retrospective study. All patients admitted to the E

Rhabdomyosarcoma is an aggressive neoplasm of primitive mesenchymal cells that have the potential to differentiate into skeletal muscle. Case selection required positive expression of both vimentin and desmin, confirmed by immunohistochemistry, and negative expression of cytokeratin. In this study of 34 young dogs, the average age at time of diagnosis was 16.5 months. The majority of tumors were located in the maxilla (n = 26, 76%), whereas a smaller subset (n = 4, 11%) occurred solely within the mandible. One (2.9%) involved the caudal mandible and maxilla, 1 of 34 (2.9%) involved the maxilla

Schwannomas may rarely arise from the facial nerve and most commonly occur in the intratemporal part of the nerve. Extratemporal facial nerve schwannomas are extremely rare. Intraparotid schwannomas usually develop in adults and only one pediatric case has hitherto been reported. Herein, we reported the second case of facial nerve schwannoma in a 7-year-old boy who presented with a slow growing, painless preauricular mass of three-year history. Superficial parotid ultrasonography revealed a solid mass with homogenous echogenicity originating from the superficial parotid lobe. There was no faci

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a relatively rare, benign noninvasive mixed odontogenic neoplasm derived from epithelial and ectomesenchymal elements of the dental tissues. It usually presents with a mean age of 11.5 years and in the posterior segment of the mandible. It is extremely rare in the posterior maxilla. Although the latest WHO edition classified AFO as developing odontoma, here we present a locally aggressive AFO in a 21-year-old male involving the posterior maxilla and sinus with bone destruction. The patient presents with a two-year history of slowly progressive left facial s

INTRODUCTION: Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a well-defined benign neoplasm characterized by slow growth and predilection for the posterior mandible site, usually treated by conservative surgical approaches. In this context, Le Fort I Approach (LFIA) has been increasingly used providing good visualization and an easy access to the lesion. It also allows removal of the lesion quickly. Although there are case reports using LFIA for the management of benign neoplasms, odontogenic cysts and tumors of the middle third of face, to our knowledge, only one article describes the use of surgical LFIA for OF

A chordoma was removed from the tail base of a 6.5-year-old ferret (Mustela putorius furo). A nodule was observed in the area of tumor development when the ferret was purchased at 3 months of age. Although the nodule did not enlarge for 2 years, slow, steady growth of the tumor was observed for 4 years before surgical removal. Eight months after removal of the chordoma, the ferret developed 2 cutaneous masses. One was adjacent to the vulva, close to where the chordoma had been removed from, whereas the other was in the nasofacial region. After 4 months of slow growth, both masses were removed

A 31-year-old woman presented with progressive weight gain, facial acne, round facies, hirsutism, and secondary amenorrhea. Her plasma cortisol, urinary free cortisol, and plasma ACTH were elevated. CT scan of abdomen revealed bilateral diffuse adrenal enlargement. MRI of pituitary failed to identify a lesion. CT scan of chest revealed an 8 mm nodule in the lower lobe of the left lung. The diagnosis of ectopic Cushing's syndrome was made. The lung tumor was surgically removed. The tumor measured up to 1.5 cm in diameter. By light microscopy, a tumor with characteristic features of bronchial ca

Hidrocystomas are relatively rare cystic skin tumors. The precise histogenetic derivation and the cellular differentiation of these tumors has been largely debated. Usually, the mean age at diagnosis of the patients with eccrine hidrocystomas (EH) is 51.6 years, 54.0 years for females and 32.5 years for males. EH develop predominantly in females (sex ratio 1:6.5). Most patients are asymptomatic; predilection sites are the lower eyelids, nose and lateral canthus. The authors report a rare case of EH of the lower face in a 57-year-old Caucasian male patient presented with mandibular asymmetry du

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a locally aggressive tumor with high rate of local recurrence but low metastatic potential. Its high-grade fibrosarcomatous variant and occurrence on the head and neck are rare findings associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The most significant prognostic feature of DFSP is obtaining tumor free surgical margins. As such, accurate recognition and proper management of this uncommon and locally aggressive malignancy is especially crucial in head and neck surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of intraoperative facial nerve monitoring (FNM) in reducing immediate and permanent postoperative facial nerve weakness after primary parotidectomy.
DATA SOURCES: PubMed-NCBI database, January 1970 to May 2025.
REVIEW METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Eligible studies compared primary parotidectomy performed with versus without FNM and reported outcomes as House-Brackmann grade ≥2. Two reviewers independently extracted study characteristics and outcomes. Study quality was assessed with th

Mandibular asymmetry may be caused by infection or trauma. Unilateral facial paralysis has many causes and Bell's palsy, which is idiopathic, is the most common type. Asymmetric muscle involvement is discussed, including the masseter, temporalis, depressor anguli oris, extraocular, and sternocleidomastoid muscles. Tumors that present asymmetrically are also considered, including the juvenile hemangioma, lymphangioma, osteoma, embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, and Burkitt's lymphoma. Finally, some miscellaneous conditions are discussed, including fibrous dysplasia, mucus retention phenomenon, electri

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an infrequently occurring neoplasm most commonly observed in the pleura, but it can develop in the head and neck region in occasional cases. However, no reports have described SFT in the temporalis muscle. Herein, we present the first known case of SFT in the temporalis muscle. A 47-year-old man complained of a painless palpable mass on his right temple. Facial enhanced computed tomography identified a 4.0× 2.9× 1.4 cm mass presenting as a vascular tumor in the right temporalis muscle under the zygomatic arch. The mass was excised from the right temporalis muscl

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma is a slow growing, benign, expansile epithelial odontogenic tumour with odontogenic mesenchyme, accounting for 0.3-1.7% of jaw tumours, signifying its rarity. The WHO defines it as "a neoplasm composed of proliferating odontogenic epithelium in a cellular ectomesenchymal tissue with varying degrees of inductive changes and dental hard tissue formation". We report a case of an 11-year-old girl who presented to the Department of Maxillo-Facial Medicine and Radiology for the evaluation of a swelling in the left posterior mandible. Her clinical chart and investigations

Pleomorphic adenoma originally called the mixed tumour is a neoplasm commonly involving major salivary glands. The spectrum of malignancy in pleomorphic adenoma comprises three distinct entities - Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma, carcinosarcoma and benign metastasising pleomorphic adenoma. Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma consists of pleomorphic adenoma with a malignant epithelial component. Occasionally, carcinomas ex pleomorphic adenoma develops metastasis. Here we are reporting here a case of benign pleomorphic adenoma arising in parotid gland which turned into malignancy after four years.

A 5-year-old girl presented with a 3-month history of left side facial palsy, followed sequentially by purulent ear discharge, complete external ophthalmoplaegia and blurred vision. On clinical examination she was febrile with left-sided conductive hearing loss. She was clinically diagnosed to have chronic suppurative otitis media of the unsafe type with petrous apicitis, middle cranial fossa abscess and cavernous sinus involvement. Preliminary CT scan findings were reported as a large left temporal lobe abscess and left otitis media with cholesteatoma. MRI of the brain obtained later corrobor

We report three patients with metastases to the ENT-region mimicking a primary malignant tumour. A 36-year-old woman presented with vertigo, sudden hearing loss, partial facial palsy and headaches. CT scan suggested a meningioma or an acoustic neuroma. Histological examination of the neoplasm removed surgically showed a metastasis from an amelanotic melanoma. A 38-year-old woman with nodules in the tongue had dysphagia. The history revealed that she had been treated successfully with chemotherapy for a carcinoma of the uterine cervix one year ago. Histological examination of a tongue biopsy sh
