Here, we describe the superficial appearance of the brain of the rarely studied tree pangolin. Phylogenetic analyses have placed the pangolins, order Pholidota, as a sister group to the order Carnivora. The majority of features visible on the surface of the tree pangolin brain, and its overall appearance can be described as typically mammalian. The pattern of sulci and gyri, while simple, appears very similar to that observed in carnivores. Two derived features of the Pholidota were observed, the first being the rostral decussation of the pyramidal tract, which instead of occurring at the spin

During the development of the central nervous system, neurons pass through critical periods or periods of vulnerability. We explored periods of vulnerability for cranial nerve nuclei by determining the effects of acute exposure to ethanol during development on the number of neurons in mature brainstem. Long-Evans rats were injected with 2.9 g ethanol/kg body weight on one day between gestational day (G) 7 and G13, inclusive. Two hours later, animals received a second injection of 1.45 g/kg. Controls were injected with equivalent volumes of saline. Brainstems of 31-day-old offspring were cryose

A case with infarction in the territory of the anterior choroidal artery (AChA) due to embolic occlusion of the internal carotid artery (ICA) is rare. We described two cases and investigated the mechanism of the territory of the AChA. Case 1 was a 69-year-old man. Case 2 was a 71-year-old woman. The neurological examination in both cases showed left homonymous hemianopsia, left facial palsy, left hemiparesis and left hemisensory disturbance. CT scan in these cases showed infarctions of the right uncus, amygdaloid nucleus, genu and posterior limb of the internal capsule, globus pallidus, latera

Through the use of a chronic microdrive recording system, neuronal unit activity was recorded throughout the brainstem of the rabbit during performance of the classically conditioned nictitating membrane (NM) extension/eyeblink response using an acoustical conditioned stimulus (CS) and a corneal airpuff unconditioned stimulus (UCS). Regions which exhibited neuronal responses near the onset of the learned response were found to be relatively localized to: the abducens, accessory abducens, and facial nuclei (the motoneurons known to innervate the muscles responsible for expression of the conditi

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are orofacial pains within the trigeminal distribution, which involve the masticatory musculature, the temporomandibular joint or both. Their pathophysiology remains unclear, as inflammatory mediators are thought to be involved, and clinically TMD presents pain and sometimes limitation of function, but often appears without gross indications of local inflammation, such as visible edema, redness and increase in temperature. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) has been implicated in other pain disorders with trigeminal distribution, such as migraine, of whic

Transection of the rat sciatic nerve induces retrograde changes in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons and in the motoneurons in the ventral grey matter of the lumbar L4-L6 spinal cord segments. In the ipsilateral dorsal grey matter and in the ipsilateral nucleus gracilis, transganglionic changes occur in the terminal fields of the centrally projecting axons of injured DRG neurons. As revealed by immunocytochemistry, the neuronal reactions were associated with a rapid proliferation and activation of microglial cells in the lumbar spinal cord as well as in the nucleus gracilis. The world view of rodents is largely determined by sensation on two length scales. One is within the animal's peri-personal space; sensorimotor control on this scale involves active movements of the nose, tongue, head, and vibrissa, along with sniffing to determine olfactory clues. The second scale involves the detection of more distant space through vision and audition; these detection processes also impact repositioning of the head, eyes, and ears. Here we focus on orofacial motor actions, primarily vibrissa-based touch but including nose twitching, head bobbing, and licking, that control se

Persistent pain following orofacial surgery is not uncommon. High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), an alarmin, is released by peripheral immune cells following nerve injury and could be related to pain associated with trigeminal nerve injury. Distal infraorbital nerve chronic constriction injury (dIoN-CCI) evokes pain-related behaviors including increased facial grooming and hyper-responsiveness to acetone (cutaneous cooling) after dIoN-CCI surgery in mice. In addition, dIoN-CCI mice developed conditioned place preference to mirogabalin, suggesting increased neuropathic pain-related aversion. Tre

Comprehending orofacial referred pain requires an understanding of the neuroanatomy of the trigeminal nerve and associated cranial nerves. It also requires knowledge of the concept of neuronal convergence as well as the recognition that the caudalis is laminated and is therefore responsible for sensory receptive fields-that one interneuron may receive multiple sensory inputs and that structures within a lamina have sensory neurons which project into the caudalis and may share the same interneuron.

Occlusal disharmony has a negative impact on emotion. The mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (Vme) neurons are the primary afferent nuclei that convey proprioceptive information from proprioceptors and low-threshold mechanoreceptors in the periodontal ligament and jaw muscles in the cranio-oro-facial regions. The dorsomedial part of the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus (Vpdm) and the ventral posteromedial nucleus (VPM) of thalamus have been proven to be crucial relay stations in ascending pathway of proprioception. The VPM sends numerous projections to primary somatosensory areas (SI), which

Injection of endothelin-1 (9 pmol) into the lateral cerebral ventricle of rats produced barrel-rotations, convulsions, tonic hindlimb extensions, facial clonus, and kinetic ataxia for up to 45 min. Quantitative metabolic autoradiographs produced from the [14C]deoxyglucose method and analyzed over 60 individual brain structures or subregions revealed intense hypermetabolism in periventricular tissues close to the injection site and in many of their efferent projection sites. Histological examination of these areas proved that this dose of endothelin was without toxic or ischemic effects on neur

Neurosarcoidosis when encountered by neurologists most commonly presents as cranial neuropathy, peripheral mononeuropathy, polyneuropathy, myopathy, meningitis or myelopathy. There are limited reports in the current literature on the cases of neurosarcoidosis patients presenting with ischaemic stroke. We discuss a 52-year-old patient with a known previous history of cutaneous sarcoidosis presenting with an acute third nerve palsy, facial weakness and ataxia. His magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain demonstrated focal signal changes in the midbrain consistent with an acute ischaemic event in t

BACKGROUND: Trichorhinophalangeal syndrome (TRPS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder, three types of which have been described in the literature. All of them are characterized by alopecia, facial dysmorphism and bone deformities. Deletions and nonsense mutations of the TRPS1 gene are responsible for most of the TRPS I and III cases with no clear genotype-phenotype correlation. The majority of missense mutations have been described at TRPS1 exon 6, encoding a presumptive GATA DNA-binding domain, and are known to be associated with the most severe forms of the phenotypic spectrum of TRPS. Mut

Gaucher's disease is caused by a lack of glucocerebrosidase, and in type 2 various neurological symptoms can occur;however, the detailed pathogenesis of the condition remains undetermined. Here we performed neurophysiological examinations in an 18-month-old girl with Gaucher's disease type 2 to specify the brainstem lesions. Developmental delay occurred from the age of 8 months, and the patient subsequently showed strabismus, loss of head control, failure to thrive and irregular respiration. She was admitted to our hospital at the age of 18 months. A definite diagnosis of Gaucher's disease typ

Sensory and motor events are important for mating, and several cranial nerve nuclei mediating these events contain androgen receptors (AR). Since mating behavior declines with age, we tested whether AR binding is decreased in cranial nerve nuclei of old male rats. Cytosol and cell nuclear androgen receptor (AR) binding was assessed in the cochlear, hypoglossal and facial nuclei in young (4 months) and old (20 months) male Fischer 344 rats. For comparison with other neural and non-neural tissue, AR binding in combined hypothalamus, preoptic area and amygdala (HPA), and muscle tissue from tongue

The present study compares the phonatory ability of a patient with a deep-reaching left-sided lesion in the region of the cortical face area with that of two squirrel monkeys in which the patient's lesion has been reduplicated bilaterally. The lesion involved Broca's area, the inferior pre- and postcentral cortex, rolandic operculum, inferior parietal cortex insula, claustrum, parts of the putamen and white matter underlying the inferior frontoparietal and insular cortex. While the squirrel monkey did not show any phonatory deficits, the patient became aphonic for more than 10 weeks following

Sheep, goat and bovine skins, as leather, were examined. The surface contours of dermal response to sunburn, facial eczema, rape scald, and demodicosis are illustrated. In sunburn, demodicosis and rape scald, finger-like and ridge pattern projections had developed. In the photo-sensitive condition of rape scald and facial eczema distension was apparent, and in addition in rape scald reactions of contrasting nature involving hair follicles indicated a considerable disorientation of the skin. The transition from str. basale to str. corneum in bovine epidermis has been examined in leather from wh

Nitric oxide has been implicated in both normal neuronal aging as well as nerve repair events because of its known roles in synaptic plasticity, synaptogenesis and neuroplathologic processes. In this study, we have determined the effect of aging, by comparing brainstem facial motor neurons (FMNs) as well as blood vessels, from adult F344 rats to those in old animals. Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression was determined both by immunohistochemistry using an antibody to iNOS on tissue sections and slot blots. In adult rats, iNOS expression was detectable only in FMNs and not in blood
