"Balancing within a closed family system": a grounded theory study of how family life is affected by having a family member with an eating disorder.

BACKGROUND: This qualitative study explores how having an adult daughter or sister with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa affects the family's daily life. Previous research has focused on the family's role in the development of an eating disorder, while more recently the focus has been on the illness's impact on the family. Caring for an individual with an eating disorder can involve distress, guilt, extra burdens, and unmet needs. By interviewing the family members of adults with eating disorders this study aims to gain insights into how the family members experience the impact of the eatin…

A Family Centered Approach to Mandated Reporting: An Anticarceral Praxis for Couple and Family Therapists Working With BIPOC Families.

This paper examines how current therapist training in mandated reporting (MR) and child welfare may inadvertently perpetuate oppression for … conditioning of therapists. This paper advocates for an anticarceral praxis and proposes an ethical family centered model. It encourages therapists to critically reflect on their roles within carceral paradigms, explore alternative supportive methods for working with BIPOC clients, and review transformative justice, abolitionist approaches, and community …

Family resiliency and family functioning in Non-Hispanic Black and Non-Hispanic White families of preterm infants.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between resiliency factors and family functioning in families of preterm infants (< 37 weeks gestation) from two different racial groups hospitalized in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). DESIGN AND METHODS: A cross-sectional design was used at five Level III/IV NICUs in a Midwestern city/suburbs. Seventy-nine family units (24 Non-Hispanic Black and 55 Non-Hispanic White) completed four instruments that assessed families' use of specific resiliency factors and a measure of family functioning. Demographic data were also col…

Family-specific aggregation of lipid GWAS variants confers the susceptibility to familial hypercholesterolemia in a large Austrian family.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hypercholesterolemia confers susceptibility to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Both serum total cholesterol (TC) and LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) exhibit a strong genetic component (heritability estimates 0.41-0.50). However, a large part of this heritability cannot be explained by the variants identified in recent extensive genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on lipids. Our aim was to find genetic causes leading to high LDL-C levels and ultimately CVD in a large Austrian family presenting with what appears to be autosomal dominant inheritance for familial hypercholesterolemia…

High familial risk of atrial fibrillation/atrial flutter in multiplex families: a nationwide family study in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Although the heritability of atrial fibrillation/atrial flutter (AF/AFl) has been determined, the familial risk in multiplex fam … d AF/AFl in ≥2 siblings, respectively. The overall spouse OR was 1.16 (1.13 to 1.19). CONCLUSIONS: Family history of AF/AFl increases the odds of AF/AFl in first-degree relatives. High familial risks were observed in multiplex families.

Familial 22q11.2 duplication: a three-generation family with a 3-Mb duplication and a familial 1.5-Mb duplication.

We report two familial cases of 22q11.2 duplication detected using multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA). In the first case, eight individuals from a three-generation family were found to carry a 3-Mb 22q11.2 duplication. The individuals carrying the duplication show phenotypic variation. This phenotypic variation includes heart defect (1 in 8 individuals, 1/8), submucous cleft palate (2/8), intellectual disability (2/8), speech delay (2/8), behaviour problems (3/8) and brachydactyly (3/8). In the second case, a 1.5-Mb 22q11.2 duplication was detected in a neonate and her nor…

A Comparison of Family Management Between Families of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder and Families of Children With Down Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: This cross-sectional study aimed to (1) compare family management between families of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or Down syndrome and (2) evaluate the contribution of the child (ASD behaviors, feeding difficulties, sleep disturbances), caregiver (mental health) and family (social support) factors to the caregiver's perceived condition management ability and effort. METHOD: Eighty-five caregivers (56 ASD, 29 Down syndrome) completed quantitative instruments online. Data analysis included independent samples t-tests and multiple linear regression. RESULTS: There…

Familial MPGN - a case series: a clinical description of familial membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis amongst three Irish families.

Genetic factors have been implicated in the pathogenesis of certain cases of MPGN. Familial cases of all three histological subtypes have been described. Genetic defects in the control of complement pathways appear to be at the root of many hereditary forms of MPGN. Here we describe a series of three families with familial MPGN. We have identified 3 individuals with a diagnosis of idiopathic MPGN, each with a sibling with the same diagnosis. Data collected included age at presentation, histological findings and age at commencement of renal replacement therapy. A family pedigree was generated f…

Familial Hypercholesterolemia.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a semi-dominant, autosomal, monogenic lipoprotein disorder characterized by severe elevations in low-d … type 9 (PCSK9). Other genes account for a minority of cases. Diagnosis is based on LDL-C levels, a family history of elevated LDL-C or premature ASCVD, supportive physical findings such as tendinous xanthomas, and, when available, molecular confirmation of a pathogenic FH-causing variant. Prompt recognition and treatment with statins, often combined wit …

Familial dysautonomia.

Familial dysautonomia (FD) is an autosomal recessive hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy (HSAN, type 3) expressed at birth with profound sensory loss and early death. The FD founder mutation in the ELP1 gene arose within the Ashkenazi Jews in the sixteenth century and is present in 1:30 Jews of European ancestry. The mutation yield a tissue-specific skipping of exon 20 and a loss of function of the elongator-1 protein (ELP1), which is essential for the development and survival of neurons. Patients with FD produce variable amounts of ELP1 in different tissues, with the brain producing m

Familial FSGS.

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) and nephrotic syndrome can be caused by rare highly penetrant mutations in number of genes. FSGS can follow both recessive and dominant inheritance patterns. In general, recessive forms present early, whereas the autosomal dominant forms present in adolescence or adulthood. Many of the genes found to be mutated in FSGS and nephrotic syndrome patients encode proteins essential for normal podocyte structure and/or function. An exception appears to be APOL1, which harbors common variants responsible for the high rate of FSGS and other nephropathies in peo

Familial osteopoikilosis.

Osteopoikilosis (OPK) is a rare, autosomally inherited, benign sclerosing bone dysplasia of unknown etiology. It is usually found incidentally on radiological examination, presenting as multiple, small, well-defined,variably shaped and widely distributed sclerotic areas throughout the skeleton. In this study, we present a case report of a 56-year-old man suffering from low back pain who was radiologically diagnosed with OPK. His daughter was likewise diagnosed with OPK.

Familial paraganglioma.

Paragangliomas are unusual tumors that are sometimes familial. We treated a family who exhibited multiple head and neck paragangliomas (HNPGs) and pheochromocytomas. The purpose was to determine the clinical characteristics of paragangliomas with familial history and to define a better standardized proceeding in the management of these tumors. Patients diagnosed with head and neck paragangliomas and identified retrospectively through clinical otolaryngology practices were given a medical and family history questionnaire. We studied a family who exhibited familial paragangliomas. This relations…

[Familial hyperaldosteronism].

Primary aldosteronism is a disorder characterized by hypertension and hypokalemia due to aldosterone secretion out of renin-angiotensin control. It is generally caused by aldosterone-producing adenoma or adrenocortical hyperplasia but, in some cases, it is due to genetic alterations. Familial type I hyperaldosteronism is the result of anomalous regulation of aldosterone secretion from ACTH (which normally regulates cortisol synthesis). Aldosterone hypersecretion can be suppressed by exogenous glucocortcoids such as dexamethasone. This autosomal dominant disorder is caused by unequal cross-over

[Familial hypobetalipoproteinemia].

We present the case of a 5-month-old girl, with consanguineous parents, who was born at 28 weeks of gestation and who showed intermittent signs of abdominal distension accompanied by increased regurgitation and vomiting after food intake. Significant biochemical alterations (reduced levels of triglicerides, cholesterol, and vitamin A and absence of apolipoprotein B and vitamin E) led to the diagnosis of homozygous hypobetalipoproteinemia, which was subsequently confirmed by genetic studies.

Familial intussusception.

Intussusception, although a common cause of emergency in pediatric surgery, occurs rarely in more than one member in the same family. A genetic predisposition has been suggested in some cases. The authors report on 4 members of a family in 3 generations who suffered each an episode of idiopathic ileocolic intussusception over a period of 52 years. This is the only instance we found after reviewing 99 cases of intussusception in our hospital during the last 10 years. There was no recurrence of intussusception in any case, and no underlying anatomic abnormality was found in the 2 patients who un…
