BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis is a potentially fatal infection of β hemolytic Group-A Streptococcus, often occurring in patients with other comorbidities, but can occur in healthy individuals as well. It commonly affects the extremities, perineum, and abdominal wall. The aim of this study was to highlight various presentations of necrotizing fasciitis in unusual anatomical sites with delayed diagnosis and treatment.
METHODS: In a retrospective analysis, seven cases of unusual presentations of necrotizing fasciitis were enrolled during a period of five years treated in a tertiary centre.

We present here a case of extensive necrotizing fasciitis during sorafenib treatment in a patient with HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma. Despite emergent extensive surgical debridement, the patient's clinical status progressive worsened until interruption of sorafenib therapy. The patient was successfully treated with temporal interruption of sorafenib therapy. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of sorafenib-associated necrotizing fasciitis. Given the life-threatening nature of the infection and the necessity for urgent intervention, clinicians should be aware of this possible…

Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe infection of the subcutaneous tissue characterized by necrosis of the superficial fascia and overlying skin and is usually associated with previous trauma and comorbidities. Periorbital necrotizing fasciitis is rare and commonly causes visual loss and soft tissue defects. A better prognosis relies critically on early diagnosis, prompt medical treatment, and timely surgical intervention. We describe a rare case of periorbital necrotizing fasciitis in the absence of an inciting event. A 55-year-old female patient presented with acute painful swelling and redness…

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare infection (0,2 to 0,4/100,000 adults) of the dermis and hypodermis extending along muscular fascia1. The absence of pathognomonic symptoms makes its diagnosis difficult. Rapidly progressive, it is a life-threatening emergency whose prognosis is letal in 30 % of cases. Treatment of necrotizing fasciitis is mixed and involves aggressive surgical debridement and medical treatment with antibiotics and supportive agents. This article is presenting the case of a young woman who developed abdominal necrotizing fasciitis following a caesarean section. In forty-eigh…

INTRODUCTION: Cervical necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but very severe infection that affects the soft-tissues of the cephalic extremity. Cervical necrotizing fasciitis most frequently occurs secondarily to inflammatory odontogenic disorders and represents the most severe infection of maxillofacial spaces, with a high lethal potential.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we selected 55 patients with confirmed cervical necrotizing fasciitis of odontogenic origin, treated in the Clinic of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Cluj-Napoca during January 1996-December 2012.
RESULTS: In the majorit…

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis is a soft tissue infection characterized by rapid progression and a high mortality rate. The objective of this study was to investigate diagnosis, causative microbial agents, comorbidities, antibiotic regimen and outcome regarding this disease at Skåne University Hospital in Malmö, Sweden.
METHODS: From medical records, we identified 33 patients treated from January 2003 to January 2013, 31 of whom could be included in our investigation.
RESULTS: The infections were monomicrobial in 87% of the cases, and most were caused by group A streptococci. The rate of …

Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a rare, progressive, and life-threatening hematopoietic stem cell disorder characterized by com … ssue destruction, purulent discharge, and necrotic patches, led to a later diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumonia infection. Courses of broad-spectrum antibiotics, surgical debridement, and superficial skin grafting were applied with successful effect during ongoing eculizumab therapy. This case highlights …

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare, rapidly progressive severe bacterial soft tissue infection with a high mortality rate. While necrotizing fasciitis classically involves the trunk, groin/perineum, lower limbs, and postoperative wound sites, primary involvement of the eyelids is a rare but well known entity. We present a 33-year-old female patient who developed periocular necrotizing fasciitis after local retrobulbar anesthesia injection and facial block for cataract surgery in the left eye and canthotomy/cantholysis for treatment of moderate retrobulbar hemorrhage in the same eye. Surgical debr…

A 73 year-old immunocompromised male was admitted to the intensive care unit with signs of necrotising fasciitis and septic shock. Prompt surgery was performed. Cultures showed Salmonella Enteritidis. Relevant antibiotics were given in a course of 14 days. A few weeks later the patient had a relapse of fever. Again blood cultures showed S. Enteritidis. This case presents a rare manifestation of extraintestinal infection with S. Enteritidis, and implicates the need for long-term antibiotic therapy to prevent relapse.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF), a life-threatening rare infection of the soft tissues, is a medical and surgical emergency. It is characterized by subtle, rapid onset of spreading inflammation and necrosis starting from the fascia, muscles, and subcutaneous fat, with subsequent necrosis of the overlying skin. Once suspected, immediate and extensive radical debridement of necrotic tissues is mandatory. Appropriate antibiotics and intensive general support avoid massive systemic diffusion of the infective process and are the key for successful treatment. However, early diagnosis is missed or delayed…

The skin changes outlined in this article can be important clues to an underlying malignancy. Paraneoplastic dermatoses are skin disorders associated with an underlying neoplasm and whose course parallels that of the neoplasm. Recognizing these skin presentations leads to early diagnosis and management of the underlying malignancy. Effective treatment of the associated neoplasm often leads to improvement of the cutaneous manifestations and should be the primary focus of each patient's management.
