All surgical cases from 1965 to 1980 and autopsy cases from 1974 to 1980 diagnosed at Howard University Hospital as necrotizing fasciitis (NF) were reviewed. Eight patient fulfilled the criteria for NF, which included (1) fascial necrosis, (2) spreading cellulitis with undermining of fascial planes, and (3) systemic toxicity as evidenced by altered mental state and hyperthermia. Bacteroides fragilis was commonly found in our most recent cases. Poor prognostic signs included (1) documented bacteremia, (2) preoperative hypotension (systolic blood pressure lower than 80 mmHg), and (3) hypocalcemi

We report the case of a 55-year-old female with a history of invasive urothelial carcinoma, hepatic and lymph node metastases, and prior radical cystectomy. The patient was admitted with a two-day history of fever, two weeks after undergoing percutaneous nephrostomy. Upon examination, she presented with hypotension, tachycardia, and abdominal pain. She was found to have severe lactic acidosis, acute renal failure, and a necrotizing soft-tissue infection confirmed via imaging. Blood cultures identified a multi-drug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae infection, and the patient was treated with flui

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare but life-threatening condition in which extensive soft tissue destruction can occur very quickly if left untreated. Therefore, timely broad-spectrum antibiotic administration is of prognostic importance in addition to radical surgical debridement.
AIM: This study evaluates the cases of NF in our hospital during the last ten years retrospectively with respect to the pathogens involved and their antimicrobial resistance. This approach aims to provide guidance regarding the most targeted initial antibiotic therapy.
METHODS: We performed a retrosp

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive, life-threatening soft tissue infection that needs acute surgical intervention and other types of supportive care. The upper extremities are a less frequent site for this infection than the lower extremities. Axillary necrotizing fasciitis is quite rare and bears a high risk of iatrogenic neurovascular injuries. We report a severe case of a 39-year-old man with a right axillary necrotizing fasciitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes. While dealing with important nerves and blood vessels at the initial emergency surgery, we marked and preserved them

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is part of the class of necrotizing soft tissue infections characterized by rapid fascial spread and necrosis of the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and superficial fascia. If left untreated, NF can rapidly deteriorate into multiorgan shock and systemic failure. NF most commonly infects the trunk and lower extremities, although it can sometimes present in the head and neck region. This review provides an overview of NF as it relates specifically to the head and neck region, including its associated clinical features and options for treatment. Noma, a related but relativel

Necrotizing fasciitis of the face and scalp is a severe bacterial infection that can result in long-term morbidity or even mortality if not properly managed. In a third-world country like Ghana, where most of the population relies on daily income for livelihood, citizens with diseases that have long-term morbidity suffer financial difficulty, particularly when the patient is the breadwinner. This brief clinical study demonstrates the severity of necrotizing fasciitis of the face and scalp originated from oral infection, and its capability to affect any part of the body if proper treatment is no

Lymphedema is a chronic edema that sometimes occurs after treatment of gynecologic cancer, and cellulitis often occurs concomitantly with lymphedema. On the other hand, necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a relatively rare, but life-threatening disease. The symptoms in cellulitis and NF are very similar. In this case report, we describe a case in which the diagnosis of NF in a lymphedematous limb was difficult. A 70-year-old woman had secondary lymphedema in bilateral legs and consulted our department. On the first day of lymphedema therapy, the patient complained of vomiting, diarrhea, and fever (3

Background: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare, rapidly progressing, and potentially fatal tissue infection involving subcutaneous tissue, superficial fascia, and the overlying skin. Breast NF is often misdiagnosed because of the thick breast tissue between the skin and deep fascia. Only early diagnosis followed by prompt antibiotic treatment and surgical therapy can prevent disastrous consequences. There are many case reports on breast NF, but a systematic review is lacking. Methods: Using PubMed and Scopus we performed a systematic review of the literature covering a period of 20 years. We

Necrotizing fasciitis is a potentially fatal soft tissue infection that may affect the upper and lower extremities, scrotum, perineum and abdominal wall. Typically, the infection demonstrates rapid spreading along the fascial planes leading to sepsis with mortality rates of 15-46%. Without adequate treatment, the mortality rate increases to close to 100%. There are four groups of pathogens that can lead to necrotizing fasciitis, namely beta-hemolytic group A streptococci, mixed infections with obligate and facultative anaerobes, clostridium species and fungal infections. Clinical signs may inc

We describe a rare case of necrotizing fasciitis of the ear in an otherwise generally healthy 39-year-old man. The ear is rarely involved in this often-fatal disease. The diagnosis was suspected on the basis of clinical examination and confirmed by computed tomography and pathology of a biopsy specimen, which revealed subcutaneous gas formation and dermal infiltration of inflammatory cells, respectively. The patient was promptly treated with surgical debridement, intravenous antibiotics, and hyperbaric oxygen. He recovered well and subsequently underwent otoplastic reconstruction with very sat

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare and aggressive soft tissue infection involving the fascia and subcutaneous tissues. It carries a high mortality and morbidity rate. In literature, the few case reports on necrotizing fasciitis of the breast, describe the need for a mastectomy in 90% of the cases. We report on a case of a 72-year old Caucasian women with an atypical presentation of necrotizing fasciitis of the breast in combination with an acute abdomen, successfully treated with breast-conserving debridement and secondary wound closure.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a severe, rare, potentially lethal soft tissue infection that develops in the scrotum and perineum, the abdominal wall, or the extremities. The infection progresses rapidly, and septic shock may ensue; hence, the mortality rate is high (median mortality 32.2%). Prognosis becomes poorer in the presence of co-morbidities, such as diabetes mellitus, immunosuppression, chronic alcohol disease, chronic renal failure, and liver cirrhosis. NF is classified into four types, depending on microbiological findings. Most cases are polymicrobial, classed as type I. The clinica

Few studies have analyzed necrotizing fasciitis in children, and all have relied on cases of necrotizing fasciitis in the abdomen, head, and neck region. The authors sought to correlate the preoperative values of several laboratory tests previously validated in the adult literature, such as the Laboratory Risk Indicator for Necrotizing Fasciitis, with surgically confirmed necrotizing fasciitis in children to provide clinical guidance for the preoperative laboratory workup of necrotizing fasciitis. A retrospective chart review was performed on consecutive patients younger than 18 years with a d

INTRODUCTION: Multifocal necrotizing fasciitis is a condition in which there is more than one non-contiguous body area affected, and it is usually the result of the dissemination of septic emboli.
CLINICAL CASE: We present a 67 year-old patient, on oral corticosteroid treatment, who was admitted with a septic shock. The previous week he had been operated on due to the perforation of a colon diverticulum. He had signs that suggested necrotizing fasciitis on all four limbs which progressed quickly. Emergency fasciotomies on all limbs were performed, and empirical antibiotic treatment was starte
