Adolescents' perceptions of attachments to their mothers and fathers in families with histories of domestic violence: a longitudinal perspective.

OBJECTIVE: The effects of both childhood and teenage experiences of domestic violence on adolescent-parent attachments were examined. METHOD: Israeli adolescents (M = 15.9 years) who were either victims of physical abuse, witnesses of physical spouse abuse, victims and witnesses of abuse, or neither victims nor witnesses of abuse were questioned about attachments to their parents using the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment [IPPA; Armsden, G. C., & Greenberg, M. T. (1987). The inventory of parent and peer attachment: Individual differences and their relationship to psychological well-bei

Adolescent attachment to parents and peers in singletons and twins born with assisted and natural conception.

STUDY QUESTION: Does adolescent attachment to parents and peers differ between singletons and twins born with ART or natural conception (NC)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Adolescent attachment anxiety with the father was higher among NC singletons than among ART and NC twins, whereas attachment avoidance with the father was higher in ART singletons than in NC singletons and NC twins. No differences were found in attachment to the mother, best friend or romantic partner. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Most studies have not found differences between ART and NC singletons in parent-adolescent relationships, but twi

Child homicide in Cairo from 2006 to 2010: characteristics and trends.

BACKGROUND: Crimes towards children have drawn public attention over the decades. Several studies have been conducted to determine the risk factors of victimizing children. Conducting studies of this crime in Cairo, the capital city of Egypt, would help in understanding the motives behind it in such a densely populated area. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY: A review of death charts was conducted in Zeinhom morgue in the years of 2006-2010 to study the trends and characteristics of child homicide in Cairo. The cut-off for a child age was at 18 years. Data related to the victim and offender was

Victims or perpetrators? Young mothers who survived intimate partner violence and their involvement with the child welfare system in Ontario.

Adolescent and young adult mothers investigated by child welfare experience multiple challenges, including high concentrations of poverty, housing instability, social isolation, mental health issues, and intimate partner violence (IPV). However, little is known about the lived experiences of young mothers involved with the child welfare system who have also encountered IPV. This study begins to address this gap by analyzing interview data of young mothers who had child welfare involvement in Ontario while pregnant or parenting and who noted experiencing IPV (n = 10). Interpretative phenomenolo

Social Support Is Protective Against the Effects of Discrimination on Parental Mental Health Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Discrimination, or unfair treatment based on individual characteristics such as gender, race, skin color, and or sexual orientation, is a pervasive social stressor that perpetuates health disparities by limiting social and economic opportunity and is associated with poor mental and physical health outcomes. AIMS: The purpose of the present study is to (1) examine the association between maternal experiences of discrimination and paternal experiences of discrimination; (2) explore how discrimination relates to parental (maternal and paternal) stress and depressive symptoms; and (3)

Individual and combined effects of postpartum depression in mothers and fathers on parenting behavior.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric anticipatory guidance has been associated with parenting behaviors that promote positive infant development. Maternal postpartum depression is known to negatively affect parenting and may prevent mothers from following anticipatory guidance. The effects of postpartum depression in fathers on parenting is understudied. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose with this work was to examine the effects of maternal and paternal depression on parenting behaviors consistent with anticipatory guidance recommendations. METHODS: The 9-month-old wave of data from a national study of children and t

[Experiences and changes in parents of children with infant cerebral palsy: a qualitative study].

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of infant cerebral palsy (ICP) is a traumatic event that can provoke multiple effects and changes in the family. The aim of the study is to discover the difficulties that parents face in the process of parenting, especially in the initial period following diagnosis. METHODS: A qualitative study was carried out through semi-structured interviews. Sixteen mothers and fathers whose children were diagnosed with cerebral palsy participated in the study. Data analysis was performed with Atlas.ti 6.2 software following a strategy of open coding. RESULTS: The reception of t

A Case Study of Paternal Filicide-Suicide: Personality Disorder, Motives, and Victim Choice.

Although evidence with respect to its prevalence is mixed, it is clear that fathers perpetrate a serious proportion of filicide. There also seems to be a consensus that paternal filicide has attracted less research attention than its maternal counterpart and is therefore less well understood. National registries are a very rich source of data, but they generally provide limited information about the perpetrator as psychiatric, psychological and behavioral data are often lacking. This paper presents a fully documented case of a paternal filicide. Noteworthy is that two motives were present: spo

Parent-infant psychotherapy for improving parental and infant mental health.

BACKGROUND: Parent-infant psychotherapy (PIP) is a dyadic intervention that works with parent and infant together, with the aim of improving the parent-infant relationship and promoting infant attachment and optimal infant development. PIP aims to achieve this by targeting the mother's view of her infant, which may be affected by her own experiences, and linking them to her current relationship to her child, in order to improve the parent-infant relationship directly. OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the effectiveness of PIP in improving parental and infant mental health and the parent-infant relatio

Does early paternal involvement predict offspring developmental diagnoses?

BACKGROUND: A long line of research has illustrated that fathers play an important role in the development of their children. Few studies, however, have examined the impact of paternal involvement at the earliest stages of life on developmental diagnoses in childhood. AIMS: The present study extends this line of research by exploring the possibility that paternal involvement prenatally, postnatally, and at the time of birth may influence offspring risk for various diagnoses in childhood. STUDY DESIGN: A quasi-experimental, propensity score matching design was used to create treatment and con

[Hereditary pancreatitis in a child].

Hereditary pancreatitis is defined as a family history of two or more relatives with pancreatitis and clinical, biochemical, or radiologic evidence of pancreatitis. This is the fourth family described with hereditary pancreatitis related to mutation c.364C>T (p.R122C) of PRSS1 gene. The index case was a four year old child who had had his first episode of abdominal pain at age three. At that time he was admitted in hospital for two days and he improved with analgesic treatment only. One year later, in a second similar episode, he had been diagnosed with pancreatitis. His father was submitted t

Early intervention program reduces stress in parents of preterms during childhood, a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: It is well documented that heightened levels of parenting stress have a negative influence on children's socio-emotional and behavioral development. Parenting stress may therefore be regarded as an outcome variable in its own right. This study investigated whether a sensitizing intervention influences stress reported by parents of prematurely born children until the children were age nine. METHODS: Preterm infants (N = 146, birth weight <2,000 g) were randomized to intervention (N = 72) with the Mother-Infant Transaction Program (MITP) or a preterm control group (N = 74) that rece

Tests of the mitigating effects of caring and supportive relationships in the study of abusive disciplining over two generations.

PURPOSE: To examine evidence of the continuity in abusive discipline across two generations (G1 and G2) and the role of safe, stable, and nurturing relationships (SSNRs) as protective factors. METHODS: Data are from the Lehigh Longitudinal Study, a prospective investigation of the causes and consequences child maltreatment that began in the 1970s with a sample of 457 children and their parents. Data were most recently collected in 2008-2010 from 80% of the original child sample (N = 357) when they were adults age 36 years on average. Of those assessed as adults, 268 participants (G2s) were pa

Sleep Problem Trajectories and Cumulative Socio-Ecological Risks: Birth to School-Age.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether there are distinct childhood sleep problem trajectories from birth to 10-11 years and to assess associations with cumulative socio-ecological risks (child, family, context). STUDY DESIGN: Participants were 5107 children from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children-Birth Cohort. At birth, cumulative risk indexes were generated for birth, parenting, family, socioeconomic, and neighborhood risks. Parent-reported child sleep problems were assessed biennially from ages 0-1 to 10-11 years. Sleep problem trajectories were derived using latent class analysis. Mul

A conceptual model predicting internalizing problems in middle childhood among children of alcoholic and nonalcoholic fathers: the role of marital aggression.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test a conceptual model predicting children's anxiety/depression in middle childhood in a community sample of children with parents who had alcohol problems (n = 112) and those without alcohol problems (n = 101). The conceptual model examined the role of parents' alcohol diagnoses, depression, and antisocial behavior among parents of children ages 12 months to kindergarten age in predicting marital aggression and parental aggravation. Higher levels of marital aggression and parental aggravation were hypothesized to predict children's depression/anxie

Psychological distress in single fathers and mothers - a Swedish population-based study.

AIMS: The primary aim of the present study was to explore the prevalence of psychological distress among single fathers and single mothers in comparison to parents living together, and the factors contributing to the differences between single and partnered parents. A secondary aim was to investigate the perceived need for parental support in relation to severe psychological distress in these groups. METHODS: A survey questionnaire was sent to a random population sample in Sweden in 2022 and 5750 parents aged 18-69 years participated. The outcome was severe psychological distress, measured by

Parent training interventions for parents with intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that the number of intellectually disabled people with children is increasing. Intellectual disabilities do not inevitably cause parenting difficulties, but it may impact on an individual's capacity to parent a child effectively. Children of parents with intellectual disabilities may be at increased risk of neglectful care, which could lead to health, developmental and behavioural problems, or increased risk of intellectual disability. Compared with other parents, those with intellectual disabilities are more likely to be involved in care proceedings. OBJECTIVES:
