Fear as a translational mechanism in the psychopathology of anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an often chronic and potentially lethal psychiatric disorder, for which the precise etiology remains elusive. While current treatment outcomes are modest at best, it is thought that the identification of translational mechanisms driving the psychopathology of AN will assist in the development and optimization of novel treatments. AN is a disorder characterized by fear and avoidance, hypervigilant scrutiny of one's body, and an unnatural fear of weight gain. Moreover, a suite of anxious traits and regimentation of behavior are atypically common well in advance of the on

Coping with Fear of and Exposure to Terrorism among Expatriates.

This paper examines existing research on the impact of terrorism on expatriate coping strategies. We consider pre-assignment fear of terrorism, in-country coping strategies, and anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) associated with repatriation. The extant research is small but growing. Our model for expatriate coping at the pre-departure, in-country, and repatriation stages includes strategies specific to each stage. Preparation using proactive coping, systematic desensitization, problem and emotion focused coping, social support, and virtual reality explorations are recommended. S

Effects of Dark Brooders on Behavior and Fearfulness in Layers.

Chicks require heat to maintain body temperature during the first weeks after hatch. This may be provided by dark brooders; i.e. , horizontal heating elements equipped with curtains. The objective was to test effects of rearing layer chicks with dark brooders on time budget and fearfulness. Behavioral observations were performed during the first six weeks of age. Three different fear tests were conducted when the birds were age 3-6, 14-15 and 26-28 weeks. During the first four days, brooder chicks rested more than control chicks whereas they spent less time drinking, feather pecking and on loc

[Septic arthritis and spondylodiscitis : Rare but feared diseases].

Septic arthritis and spondylodiscitis are relatively rare but severe diseases with increasing incidence. Septic arthritis is an emergency situation with high morbidity (40 %) and fatality rates (11 %). The infection occurs via a hematogenous route by direct inoculation or per continuitatem. Patients with pre-existing destructive joint diseases or under immunosuppressive treatment are particularly at risk. It is mandatory to sample synovial fluid for isolation of the relevant pathogen and quantification of leucocytes before starting antibiotic therapy. In order to preserve the joint, early evac

Development and Validation of the Athlete Fear Avoidance Questionnaire.

CONTEXT: The fear-avoidance model was developed in an attempt to explain the process by which "pain experience" and "pain behavior" become dissociated from the actual pain sensation in individuals who manifest the phenomenon of exaggerated pain perception. High levels of fear avoidance can lead to chronic pain and disability and have successfully predicted rehabilitation time in the work-related-injury population. Existing fear-avoidance questionnaires have all been developed for the general population, but these questionnaires may not be specific enough to fully assess fear avoidance in an at

Fear and the Defense Cascade: Clinical Implications and Management.

Evolution has endowed all humans with a continuum of innate, hard-wired, automatically activated defense behaviors, termed the defense cascade. Arousal is the first step in activating the defense cascade; flight or fight is an active defense response for dealing with threat; freezing is a flight-or-fight response put on hold; tonic immobility and collapsed immobility are responses of last resort to inescapable threat, when active defense responses have failed; and quiescent immobility is a state of quiescence that promotes rest and healing. Each of these defense reactions has a distinctive neu

Fears of violence during morning travel to school.

PURPOSE: Children's safety as they travel to school is a concern nationwide. We investigated how safe children felt from the risk of being assaulted during morning travel to school. METHODS: Children between 10 and 18 years old were recruited in Philadelphia and interviewed with the aid of geographic information system (GIS) mapping software about a recent trip to school, situational characteristics, and how safe they felt as they travelled based on a 10-point item (1 = very unsafe, 10 = very safe). Ordinal regression was used to estimate the probability of perceiving different levels of safe

The effect of a retrieval cue on the return of spider fear.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Exposure therapy is often used as treatment for anxiety disorders. However, a change in context after exposure can result in fear renewal. This renewal can be attenuated by using retrieval cues stemming from the exposure context. The present study investigated the effect of such a cue in spider-fearful persons. METHODS: Thirty-three participants underwent an in vivo exposure session while wearing a bracelet (retrieval cue). After exposure, half of the participants continued to wear the bracelet at home until follow-up (cue groups); the other half handed over the bra

Dentists' skills with fearful patients: education and treatment.

The aims were to explore dentists' skills in dental fear, current strategies when treating fearful adult patients, and the possible need for additional education among dentists working in Sweden. A sample of 1,293 members of the Association of Public Health Dentists in Sweden were asked to respond to a Web survey concerning dental fear. The response rate was 69% (n = 889); 91% trained in Sweden and 9% trained in another country. The most frequently used pharmacological anxiety-reducing techniques were medication with a midazolame mixture (72%) and benzodiazepine tablets (77%), and the most com

Fear bradycardia and activation of the human periaqueductal grey.

Animal models of predator defense distinguish qualitatively different behavioral modes that are activated at increasing levels of predation threat. A defense mode observed at intermediate threat levels is freezing: a cessation of locomotion that is characterized by a parasympathetically dominated autonomic nervous system response that causes heart rate deceleration, or fear bradycardia. Studies in rodents have shown that freezing depends on amygdalar projections to the periaqueductal grey (PAG). In humans, freezing-like behaviors are implicated in development and maintenance of psychopathology

Impairment of fear memory consolidation and expression by antihistamines.

Antihistamines are widely used to treat allergy symptoms. First-generation antihistamines have adverse effects on the central nervous system (CNS), such as hypnotic and amnesic effects, whereas second-generation antihistamines have poor brain penetration, and therefore, have fewer CNS-related adverse effects. Memory consists of several phases, including acquisition, consolidation, expression, and extinction. It remains unclear whether these phases are affected by antihistamines. We investigated the effects of diphenhydramine, a first-generation antihistamine, and levocetirizine and olopatadine

[Fear of progression in partners of chronically ill patients].

Fear of progression (FoP) is one of the most prevalent symptoms in patients with chronic diseases. Little is known about FoP in partners of chronically ill patients. Therefore, this study assessed FoP in 332 partners of lung, colon cancer, migraine and rheumatism patients. Objectives were to ascertain the influence of individual, dyadic and disease related factors on FoP. 49% of partners were experiencing high levels of FoP varied according to the nature of the disease (highest FoP in spouses of lung cancer patients, lowest in partners of migraine patients). As significant predictors emerged m

Gelotophobia in Israel: on the assessment of the fear of being laughed at.

Gelotophobia is defined as the fear of being laughed at. Empirical studies revealed that it is a valid and useful concept which deserves further attention. Furthermore, gelotophobia is of relevance among nonclinical groups, and it should be best conceptualized as an individual differences phenomenon that ranges on a dimension from low to high fear of being laughed at. The present study presents the first empirical data on the fear of being laughed at in Israel (N = 220). It describes the adaptation of an instrument for the subjective assessment of gelotophobia to Hebrew. The translation yielde

Evidence for an encounter expectancy bias in fear of spiders.

Whereas research has demonstrated that phobic or fearful individuals overestimate the likelihood of incurring aversive consequences from an encounter with feared stimuli, it has not yet been systematically investigated whether these individuals also overestimate the likelihood (i.e., the frequency) of such encounters. In the current study, spider-fearful and control participants were presented with background information that allowed them to estimate the overall likelihood that different kinds of animals (spiders, snakes, or birds) would be encountered. Spider-fearful participants systematical

Heightened fear of uncertainty in anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To test whether intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is related to eating disorder (ED) pathology. METHOD: Thirty individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), 19 with bulimia nervosa (BN), and 28 healthy control women (CW) completed the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS). RESULTS: AN and BN groups showed higher IU compared with CW. In AN and BN, Harm Avoidance and Depression scores were positively correlated with IU. In AN but not BN, IU was related positively to Drive for Thinness and Body Dissatisfaction. DISCUSSION: Elevated IU is associated with AN and BN. Anxious traits may be inh

Is there a place for fear of blushing in social anxiety spectrum?

BACKGROUND: Fear of blushing (FB) in front of other people is a frequent and potentially incapacitating problem, but is not yet described as a specific diagnosis in psychiatric classifications. This can be explained by a lack of comparative studies with other forms of social anxiety disorder (SAD). Our aim was thus to explore the specificity of FB in patients with SAD. METHODS: SAD patients with FB but without other social threat (n = 142), the majority of whom were referred by a department of surgery after an initial request of sympathetic block for facial blushing, were compared to SAD pati
