Body proportions for the facilitation of walking, running and flying: the case of partridges.

BACKGROUND: Predation is one of the most important natural selection forces. Prey species can optimize feeding behavior and escape from predators based on mobility conditioned by body proportions. With age, mobility capacity increases and individuals are more efficient in finding resources and safety (e.g., food and refuge). Birds' mobility is driven by the dimensions, of the head and torso, as well as the extremities and flight feathers. To assess the relationship between body traits and to understand how body proportions are organized in wild Red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa), we used b…

Chronic stress and fear in fast- and slow-growing broilers as they age and gain weight when raised in simple or complex environments.

The objective was to assess how environmental complexity influences fear and chronic stress in fast- and slow-growing broiler chickens as they age and gain weight. Six-hundred fast-growing (Ross 708) and 600 slow-growing (Hubbard Redbro Mini) broilers were raised in 24 pens with simple (standard) or complex (permanent and temporary enrichments) pens. Tonic immobility (TI) tests were performed on 6 broilers/pen to assess fear, with 3 sampled for primary wing feathers to assess feather corticosterone (fCORT) concentration at 4, 5, and 6 weeks of age and 1, 2, and 3 kg of body weight, resulting i…

L. rhamnosus improves the immune response and tryptophan catabolism in laying hen pullets.

In mammals, early-life probiotic supplementation is a promising tool for preventing unfavourable, gut microbiome-related behavioural, immunological, and aromatic amino acid alterations later in life. In laying hens, feather-pecking behaviour is proposed to be a consequence of gut-brain axis dysregulation. Lactobacillus rhamnosus decreases stress-induced severe feather pecking in adult hens, but whether its effect in pullets is more robust is unknown. Consequently, we investigated whether early-life, oral supplementation with a single Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain can prevent stress-induced fe

Early-life exposure to artificial light at night elevates physiological stress in free-living songbirds☆.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) can disrupt adaptive patterns of physiology and behavior that promote high fitness, resulting in physiologi … birds, by exposing nestling great tits (Parus major) to ALAN inside nest boxes. We measured CORT in feathers grown over the timeframe of the experiment (7 nights), such that CORT concentrations represent an integrative metric of hormone release over the period of nocturnal light exposure, and of development. We also assessed the relationships between feath …

Inferior Spear-like Lens Opacity as a Sign of Keratoconus.

PURPOSE: To report 21 cases of typical inferior feather-shape lens opacity associated with keratoconus. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated the association of keratoconus with inferior feather-shape lens opacity in refractive surgery candidates. Visual acuity, demographic, refractive, and topographic characteristics of 26 eyes of 21 patients with inferior feather-shape lens opacity were evaluated in detail. Pedigree analysis was also performed to assess possible inheritance. RESULTS: Overall, 2122 out of 33,368 cases (6.4%) without lens opacity had keratoconus, while 20 out

Endocervical glandular cell abnormalities in conventional cervical smears: evaluation of the performance of cytomorphological criteria and HPV testing in predicting neoplasia.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the correlation between cytomorphological criteria in smears with atypical glandular cells (AGC) or adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) and human papillomavirus (HPV) reflex test results with different neoplastic histological diagnoses, particularly to distinguish between glandular and squamous neoplasia. METHODS: A series of 155 women with glandular abnormalities in their conventional cervical smears was included: 106 with AGC, 35 with AGC associated with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) and 14 with AIS. Two reviewers evaluated 35 cytomorphological criteria an

The oral bioavailability and toxicokinetics of methylmercury in common loon (Gavia immer) chicks.

We compared the toxicokinetics of methylmercury in captive common loon chicks during two time intervals to assess the impact of feather growth on the kinetics of mercury. We also determined the oral bioavailability of methylmercury during these trials to test for age-related changes. The blood concentration-time curves for individuals dosed during feather development (initiated 35 days post hatch) were best described by a one-compartment toxicokinetic model with an elimination half-life of 3 days. The data for birds dosed following completion of feather growth (84 days post hatch) were best fi

DETERMINING RAPTOR SPECIES AND TISSUE SENSITIVITY FOR IMPROVED WEST NILE VIRUS SURVEILLANCE.

Raptors are a target sentinel species for West Nile virus (WNV) because many are susceptible to WNV disease, they are easily sighted because of their large size, and they often occupy territories near human settlements. Sick and dead raptors accumulate at raptor and wildlife rehabilitation clinics. However, investigations into species selection and specimen type for efficient detection of WNV are lacking. Accordingly, we evaluated dead raptors from north-central Colorado, US and southeast Wyoming, US over a 4-yr period. Nonvascular mature feathers ("quill"), vascular immature feathers ("pulp")…

Persistent organic pollutants and inorganic elements in the Balearic shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus wintering off Portugal.

This study presents the first data on trace element and organic pollutant concentrations in the Critically Endangered Balearic shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus collected in 2010 and 2011 in Portugal. Trace element levels were below the threshold levels for adverse effects on birds, despite the Hg concentrations in feathers (4.35μg·g-1ww). No significant differences were detected between individuals from 2010 and 2011 except for Se concentrations in liver, feathers and muscle (higher in 2010) and Ag in liver and muscle (higher in 2011). No significant differences were detected in total concentr…

Evaluation of the potential growth and body composition of the Cobb MV x500 genotype.

The potential growth and body composition of modern broiler genotypes must be periodically re-evaluated to quantify the effects of continued … ody. The hypothesis that, within a sex, all chemical and physical components of the body other than feathers could be described using a common rate of maturing was corroborated by the evidence presented. Water and lipid deposition differed markedly between sexes, whereas protein and ash contents remained relatively constant throughout growth. The resulting …

Transcriptome analysis of genes potentially associated with white and black plumage formation in Chinese indigenous ducks (Anas platyrhynchos).

1. Plumage colour is an important recognisable characteristic of duck (Anas platyrhynchos), but the colouration mechanisms remain largely unknown. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the formation of black and white plumage, the following study applied RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) to catalogue the global gene expression profiles in the duck feather bulbs of black and white colours.2. Black feather bulbs were collected from Putian Black ducks (B-PTB) and black Longsheng Jade-green ducks (B-LS), while white feather bulbs were collected from Putian White ducks (W-PTW), Putian Black ducks

Assessing the welfare consequences of providing litter for feed-restricted broiler breeders.

1. Broiler breeder females were fed restricted allocations of a standard wheat-soy ration to meet target body weights. They were housed on raised plastic slotted floors (S) or wood shavings litter (L) from hatch to 8 weeks when each pen of 12 birds was transferred to another pen in the same block in a 2 x 2 factorial experiment (LL, LS, SL and SS). Measures of bird welfare were taken at 4 weeks of age, and at 9 and 10 weeks following transfer to the new pens. 2. At 4 weeks of age, birds reared on S spent more time standing, pecking the feeder, the wall and other birds and less time pecking the

Acute exacerbation in chronic bird fancier's lung with pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis.

A 71-year-old non-smoker woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of a six-month history of dry cough. She had kept java sparrow for nine years and has been raising budgerigars for the previous eight months. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) images of the chest revealed reticulonodular lesions predominantly in the bilateral upper lobes. Surgical lung biopsy specimens showed non-caseous epithelioid cell granulomas in the alveolar spaces, including irregular and centrilobular fibrosis with pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis. When she started using a duck feather duvet at home, she d

Lattice-based flow field modeling.

We present an approach for simulating the natural dynamics that emerge from the interaction between a flow field and immersed objects. We model the flow field using the Lattice Boltzmann Model (LBM) with boundary conditions appropriate for moving objects and accelerate the computation on commodity graphics hardware (GPU) to achieve real-time performance. The boundary conditions mediate the exchange of momentum between the flow field and the moving objects resulting in forces exerted by the flow on the objects as well as the back-coupling on the flow. We demonstrate our approach using soap bubb

Zinc deficiency in pheasant chicks fed practical diets.

A disease syndrome characterized by abnormal feathering and varus deviation of the tarsometatarsus spontaneously occurred in pheasant chicks fed a practical commercially prepared diet. The addition of supplemental Zn to the commercial diet was effective in alleviating the clinical signs, even though the commercial mix had Zn levels that met the published pheasant chick requirement. Supplemental arginine was ineffective in reducing the severity of the clinical signs. Also, when the diet was mixed in a laboratory setting, pheasant chicks did not develop abnormal feathering and leg bones. Clinica

Performance and mechanism of enhanced phosphorus release and volatile fatty acid production from Fe-P sludge via co-fermenting with agricultural wastes.

Anaerobic fermentation is an efficient method to extract phosphorus from excess sludge, thereby facilitating its recovery and mitigating the phosphorus resource shortage. However, the prevalent metal-bound phosphorus species within sludge was difficult to release into the fermentation liquor. To address this, this study evaluated the enhanced phosphorus release performance from sludge containing iron-phosphorus compounds (Fe-P) via co-fermenting it with agriculture wastes. Specifically, protein-rich feather (Feather Group) and polysaccharide-rich tea residue (Tea Group) was respectively dosed

Assessing mercury exposure and effects to American dippers in headwater streams near mining sites.

To evaluate mercury (Hg) exposure and possible adverse effects of Hg on American dipper (Cinclus mexicanus) reproduction, we collected eggs and nestling feathers and the larval/nymph form of three Orders of aquatic macroinvertebrates (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera = EPT) important in their diet from three major headwater tributaries of the upper Willamette River, Oregon in 2002. The Coast Fork Willamette River is contaminated with Hg due to historical cinnabar (HgS) mining at the Black Butte Mine; the Row River is affected by past gold-mining operations located within the Bohemia M…

Alpine accentors as monitors of atmospheric long-range lead and mercury pollution in alpine environments.

Mercury and lead are deposited in the West Carpathians as long-range transported air pollution. The Alpine accentor (Prunella collaris) was recognized as a cost-effective biomonitor, and used to investigate the bioavailability of contaminants in large alpine areas. The outer tail feathers and blood of the alpine accentors were used for assessment of atmospheric mercury and lead contamination, respectively. Mean mercury levels in feathers of accentors averaged at 1.15 μg/g (SE = 0.105, n = 40). There were no temporal variations in mercury concentrations. Mean blood lead levels were at 5.2 μg/dL…
