Eating and feeding problems in children with cancer: Prevalence, related factors, and consequences.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: During treatment for cancer, children experience many side effects such as lack of appetite, nausea, and vomiting. As a result, ensuring adequate intake puts pressure on both the child and the parent. This study aims to determine the prevalence, causes and consequences of eating and feeding problems in children treated for cancer. METHODS: Parents of 85 children with cancer completed the Behavioral Pediatrics Feeding Assessment Scale (BPFAS) and symptoms, BMI, energy intake, feeding style, and parental distress were measured at 0, 3, 6 and 12 months after diagnosis. RESULT

Behavioral effects of bombesin administration in rats.

Bombesin (BBS, 0.1-4.0 micrograms) administered to the lateral cerebral ventricle (IVT) of rats decreased food intake and feeding behavior. Grooming behavior increased and resting behavior decreased as doses greater than or equal to 0.01 microgram. IVT BBS (4.0 micrograms) caused greater suppression of food-deprivation-induced food intake and feeding behavior than the same dose and volume administered intraperitoneally (IP). After IVT BBS, rats displayed more grooming and less resting than normal, but after IP BBS, rats displayed a normal frequency of grooming and more resting. IVT BBS (greate…

Glial hypothalamic inhibition of GLUT2 expression alters satiety, impacting eating behavior.

Glucose is a key modulator of feeding behavior. By acting in peripheral tissues and in the central nervous system, it directly controls the secretion of hormones and neuropeptides and modulates the activity of the autonomic nervous system. GLUT2 is required for several glucoregulatory responses in the brain, including feeding behavior, and is localized in the hypothalamus and brainstem, which are the main centers that control this behavior. In the hypothalamus, GLUT2 has been detected in glial cells, known as tanycytes, which line the basal walls of the third ventricle (3V). This study aimed t…

Prey capture kinematics of horned frogs (Anura: Ceratophryidae).

Horned frogs, members of the Ceratophryidae family, encompass a group of anurans varying in size and behavior, yet unified by morphological and behavioral traits enabling them to adopt a megalophagous diet (i.e., large prey feeding). Although the group has been the focus of numerous studies, our understanding of its feeding behavior remains limited. In this study, we characterize the feeding mechanism in five species representing the three extant genera of ceratophryid anurans, both in terrestrial and aquatic environments. We also explore the ability of Chacophrys pierottii to adjust feeding b…

Frustrated appetitive foraging behavior, stereotypic pacing, and fecal glucocorticoid levels in snow leopards (Uncia uncia) in the Zurich Zoo.

This study hypothesized that permanently frustrated, appetitive-foraging behavior caused the stereotypic pacing regularly observed in captive carnivores. Using 2 adult female snow leopards (Uncia uncia), solitarily housed in the Zurich Zoo, the study tested this hypothesis experimentally with a novel feeding method: electronically controlled, time-regulated feeding boxes. The expected result of employing this active foraging device as a successful coping strategy was reduced behavioral and physiological measures of stress, compared with a control-feeding regime without feeding boxes. The study

The effect of dietary alterations during rearing on growth, productivity, and behavior in broiler breeder females.

Parent stocks of meat birds are severely feed restricted to avoid obesity-related health and fertility problems. This restriction often leads to chronic hunger, accompanied by stereotypic behavior. Research based in the United Kingdom has shown that using diets containing fiber and appetite suppressants may relieve some of the symptoms of hunger. However, few data are available regarding North American-sourced ingredients or nondaily feeding regimens. This study investigated the effects of 2 alternative diets, in combination with 2 feeding frequencies on growth, productivity, and behavior in b

Effects of intracerebroventricular administration of aliphatic diamines on ingestive behavior in the rat.

We examined the pharmacological effects of intracerebroventricularly administered aliphatic diamines on ingestive behavior in male rats adapted to a 4 hr per day feeding and drinking schedule. 1,2-Ethanediamine (ETD), 1,3-propanediamine (PRD), 1,4-butanediamine (putrescine, PUT), 1,5-pentanediamine (cadaverine, CAD) and 1,6-hexanediamine (HED) suppressed feeding and drinking behavior in a dose-dependent manner, but not unless a relatively high dose (over 80 micrograms) was given. The approximate anorectic potency was HED greater than CAD divided by PUT greater than ETD greater than PRD. A seda

Lateral parabrachial nucleus astrocytes control food intake.

Food intake behavior is under the tight control of the central nervous system. Most studies to date focus on the contribution of neurons to this behavior. However, although previously overlooked, astrocytes have recently been implicated to play a key role in feeding control. Most of the recent literature has focused on astrocytic contribution in the hypothalamus or the dorsal vagal complex. The contribution of astrocytes located in the lateral parabrachial nucleus (lPBN) to feeding behavior control remains poorly understood. Thus, here, we first investigated whether activation of lPBN astrocyt…

Feeding responses to free-flow formula in term and preterm infants.

OBJECTIVES: Although introducing freely flowing formula into the infant's mouth is a common feeding practice, its effect on feeding behavior is largely unknown. We evaluated the effects of free flow of formula from the nipple on infant feeding activity (sucking, swallowing, ingestion rate) and documented potential adverse behaviors such as cough, restless behavior, drooling, apnea, and bradycardia. METHODS: We studied 13 preterm and 7 term infants. During a feeding, bottle pressure was adjusted every 2 to 3 minutes to increase or decrease free flow from the nipple. RESULTS: Increase in free …

Tongue twisters: feeding enrichment to reduce oral stereotypy in giraffe.

Stereotypic behavior has been well-studied and documented in a variety of animals including primates, carnivores, and domesticated ungulates … to be related to feeding and rumination and may be a result of the inability of a highly motivated feeding behavior pattern, tongue manipulation, to be successfully completed. To test this hypothesis, the indoor and outdoor feeders for three giraffe housed at Zoo Atlanta were modified to require the giraffe to perform more naturalistic and complex foraging behavi …

Elevated activity of the mesolimbic dopamine system promotes feeding during pregnancy in mice.

The pregnancy period is accompanied by increased feeding behavior to accommodate the elevated energy demands associated with fetal growth and development. However, the underlying neural circuitry and molecular mechanisms mediating increased feeding during pregnancy are largely unknown. Here, we utilized a combination of fiber photometry, chemogenetics, and mouse behavioral assays to characterize altered feeding behavior during pregnancy in mice. We uncover that pregnancy increases the average activity of the mesolimbic dopamine system during feeding behavior in mice. VTA dopamine neurons promo…

Neuropeptide Y2 receptor (NPY2R) expression in saliva predicts feeding immaturity in the premature neonate.

BACKGROUND: The current practice in newborn medicine is to subjectively assess when a premature infant is ready to feed by mouth. When the assessment is inaccurate, the resulting feeding morbidities may be significant, resulting in long-term health consequences and millions of health care dollars annually. We hypothesized that the developmental maturation of hypothalamic regulation of feeding behavior is a predictor of successful oral feeding in the premature infant. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed the gene expression of neuropeptide Y2 receptor (NPY2R), a known hypothalamic regulator of …

Effects of the antiestrogen, RU 58668, on female sexual behavior in rats.

RU 58668 is a steroidal antiestrogen believed to be devoid of any partial agonist activity. Most of the work with RU 58668 has focused on its potential as an antineoplastic agent in the treatment of breast cancer, but it has not been tested for its effects on the brain and behavior. Other antiestrogens are problematic because most are either partial agonists or do not cross the blood-brain barrier. The purpose of this study was to test if RU 58668 blocks two classic estrogen-dependent behaviors: female sexual behavior and feeding behavior. We used a repeated measures design to examine if RU 58…

Acute nicotine activates orectic and inhibits anorectic brain regions in rats exposed to chronic nicotine.

Nicotine use produces psychoactive effects, and chronic use is associated with physiological and psychological symptoms of addiction. However, chronic nicotine use is known to decrease food intake and body weight gain, suggesting that nicotine also affects central metabolic and appetite regulation. We recently showed that acute nicotine self-administration in nicotine-dependent animals produces a short-term increase in food intake, contrary to its long-term decrease of feeding behavior. As feeding behavior is regulated by complex neural signaling mechanisms, this study aimed to test the hypoth…

A pair of interneurons influences the choice between feeding and locomotion in Drosophila.

The decision to engage in one behavior often precludes the selection of others, suggesting cross-inhibition between incompatible behaviors. For example, the likelihood to initiate feeding might be influenced by an animal's commitment to other behaviors. Here, we examine the modulation of feeding behavior in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, and identify a pair of interneurons in the ventral nerve cord that is activated by stimulation of mechanosensory neurons and inhibits feeding initiation, suggesting that these neurons suppress feeding while the fly is walking. Conversely, inhibiting a…

Implications of successive blood feeding on Wolbachia-mediated dengue virus inhibition in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

Wolbachia is a promising strategy to inhibit dengue virus (DENV) transmission by Ae. aegypti mosquitoes. Laboratory studies assessing DENV inhibition by Wolbachia typically have not considered natural frequent mosquito blood feeding behavior. Here, we determine the impact of successive feeding on DENV-2 transmission by Ae. aegypti in the presence or absence of Wolbachia (wAlbB and wMelM strains). We show that successive feeding shortens the extrinsic incubation period (EIP) in wildtype (WT; without Wolbachia) and wAlbB mosquitoes through enhanced dissemination. Feeding empirical data into mode…
