Hemipelvectomy was successfully avoided in a patient with extensive necrotic groin recurrence of vulvar cancer after prior radiation therapy. Tumor-free resection margins were achieved by wide excision of the recurrence including resection of the pubic bone and adjacent muscles. Groin node dissection was done in an 80-year-old woman who had bilateral groin metastasis from squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva. After this procedure, laparoscopic pelvic lymphadenectomy was performed because of bilaterally positive groin nodes. Postoperatively, a strangulated femoral hernia occurred.

Two patients with osteoid osteomas were evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging at 1.5 T using both conventional spin-echo (SE) and short TI inversion-recovery (STIR) sequences. On plain films the classic findings of a radiolucent nidus with a dense surrounding reactive zone of sclerosis were absent. The diagnosis was suspected on observing the presence of marked marrow oedema in the involved bone. Conventional SE images were unimpressive in detecting the bone marrow changes. We present two unusual cases of sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis (SCCH) in conjunction with palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) and additional tumour like manifestations in a scapula and a femur respectively. The association of SCCH with complexes of signs and symptoms such as chronic multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO), or other nosological entities such as seronegative spondylarthropathies, is discussed.

The size and shape of the patella make it suitable for the partial replacement of a femoral or tibial condyle resected for tumour, or destroyed by trauma. It can provide a good articular surface and may give satisfactory knee function. Nineteen cases of patellar grafts are presented, with follow-up from two to nine years. Endoprostheses of the knee (14) and hip (after Sivash ) (2) joints were used in the treatment of 16 children operated on for osteogenic sarcoma at the Center Clinic. Postoperative complications leading to amputation occurred in two cases of lesions of the proximal part of shinbone . Good functional results were obtained: knee joints supplied with endoprosthesis flexed through 80 degrees. The results are only preliminary considering the relatively short period of the study but they are encouraging enough.

As shown in earlier studies, the lodgement of circulating tumour cells in the lungs is reduced by thrombocytopenia in both normal and traumatized rats. Other experiments have shown that thrombocytopenia and antiserotonin treatment with ketanserin, which has a selective effect on 5-HT2 receptors, decrease the hepatic lodgement of intraportally injected tumour cells. The present studies show that treatment with ketanserin also reduces the lodgement of i.v.-injected tumour cells in the lungs in both normal and traumatized rats.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of atypical femoral fractures in breast cancer patients is theoretically expected to be significantly higher than in those with primary osteoporosis. This is due to the prolonged and higher dosages of bisphosphonates used for post-operative bone protection and secondary osteoporosis. CASE: We report a 15-year-old boy with primary hyperparathyroidism and hypercalcemia, caused by a parathyroid adenoma, identified during evaluation for slipped capital femoral epiphyses (SCFEs). Atypical SCFE presentation, including late pubertal presentation, nephrolithiasis, and normal BMI, prompted metabolic investigation. Hypercalcemia was managed with fluids, calcitonin, pamidronate, and cinacalcet, followed by parathyroidectomy and SCFE surgery, leading to normalized calcium levels.

Transthoracic, transesophageal, and intracardiac echocardiography are applicable imaging tools used for increasing the accuracy of tumor positioning during transvenous intracardiac tumor biopsy. However, incorporating echo-images in the extremely rare procedures is usually not easy. By using a contralateral catheter for simultaneous contrast injection and tip positioning, we demonstrated tumor biopsy safely and effectively in 4 cases without the guidance of echocardiography.

Parathyroid carcinoma is an uncommon cause of primary hyperparathyroidism; however, when this condition is severe, cancer must be suspected. We report on a 28-year-old male with severe hypercalcemia, cachexia, acute pancreatitis, urolithiasis, anemia and a severe skeletal involvement with multiple fractures.
