Bilateral femur neck fractures in young adult patients are very rare in atraumatic circumstances. We report a young premenopausal female with osteomalacia secondary to vitamin D deficiency and spontaneous bilateral femur neck fractures. Patients had no reported risk factors for osteomalacia but hypovitaminosis D was noted on laboratory evaluation. Osteomalacia secondary to low serum levels of vitamin D may lead to stress and fragility fractures. Identification and treatment of at risk patients may decrease the incidence of stress fractures and its possible complications.

BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of the femoral version can be challenging in the operating room. We evaluated if an observer can reliably and accurately determine when a femoral neck is parallel to the floor with a modified C-arm technique. We compared this technique to the previously reported modified Ogata-Goldsand technique for determining the intraoperative femoral version.
METHODS: To evaluate if an observer can determine when the femoral neck is level to the ground, 72 cadaveric femurs were photographed laterally at the proximal femur with the bone rotated to simulate a version ranging

Regular exercisers have lower fracture risk, despite modest effects of exercise on bone mineral content (BMC). Exercise may produce localized cortical and trabecular bone changes that affect bone strength independently of BMC. We previously demonstrated that brief, daily unilateral hopping exercises increased femoral neck BMC in the exercise leg versus the control leg of older men. This study evaluated the effects of these exercises on cortical and trabecular bone and its 3D distribution across the proximal femur, using clinical CT. Fifty healthy men had pelvic CT scans before and after the ex

INTRODUCTION: The Girdlestone resection arthroplasty procedure is one of the options for treating an infected hip arthroplasty. It is a surgical procedure that involves resection of the head and neck of the femur, resulting in pseudarthrosis of the hip joint. This is often kept as a last resort for patients with significant co-morbidities or when other treatments have been ineffective. This procedure should be considered a salvage procedure, primarily aimed at pain relief and infection control.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 73-year-old male who sustained a fracture of the neck of the fem

We report a method of surgical treatment of sequela of septic hips and osteomyelitis of the proximal end of the femur in seven children. Roentgenologic and clinical studies before operation showed unstable hip with loss of the femoral neck and head. Reconstruction osteotomy of remnants of the neck and/or head of the femur and a callus distraction procedure in the direction of the acetabulum with the Kalnberz external fixation device was performed. This allowed stabilization of the hip joint, new bone formation in anatomic place of the femoral head, and retention of hip joint function.

For evaluation of the community health program, 1543 inhabitants aged 40-79 years were recruited as cohort members in Miyama Village, Wakayama Prefecture. In this cohort, bone mineral density (BMD) of 400 subjects, 50 males and 50 females each randomly selected from each of four age strata, was measured at the lumbar spine and femur neck by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Information on exposure to possible risk factors was obtained from a self-administered questionnaire. The results were as follows; BMD at the lumbar spine and femur neck in women aged 70-79 who maintained an exercise habit

OBJECTIVE: Growth disorders (e. g. caused by congenital hip dislocation, Perthes disease or bacterial coxitis) often lead to an infantile deformity of the proximal femur with a shortened femoral neck and displaced grater trochanter. In 1988, Morscher and Buess described a femoral neck lenghtening osteotomy for treatment of adults. For the first time, we show a modification of this osteotomy for children and adolescents with a locking plate system. The aim is to restore the normal anatomy of the femoral neck and biomechanics of the proximal femur.
INDICATIONS: All symptomatic deformities of th

INTRODUCTION: Bilateral femoral neck fracture in children is uncommon and is extremely rare in the absence of significant injury or any underlying systemic and local bone disease. Diagnosis in these healthy children is usually delayed due to the presence of mild symptoms and lack of suspicion for a fracture.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of 13-year-old girl with a bilateral neck of femur fracture without any history of trauma or any underlying systemic or local disease. The child presented to us 6 months after the onset of symptoms and was managed by osteosynthesis and valgus intertrochanteri

The stability of internal fixation of femoral neck fractures can be obtained through surgical techniques, the configuration of screws and bone grafting, etc. However, the blood supply injury caused by fractures could not be completely reversed by the current medical management. Hence, the comprehensive evaluation of the residual blood supply of the femoral neck, to perioperatively avoid further iatrogenic injury, has become a hotspot. The anatomy of the extraosseous blood supply of the femoral neck has been widely reported, while its clinical application mostly involved the assessment of the m

Femoral neck fractures are a massive personal and health programme burden. Methods to study femoral neck strength, across its combined trabecular and cortical components are therefore essential. Rodent ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis models are commonly coupled with ex vivo 3-/4-point bending methods to measure changes in femoral cortical diaphysis. The loading direction used to assess these properties are often non-physiologic and, moreover, these ovariectomy models are linked to marked weight gain that can influence the biomechanical properties. Herein, we explore whether more physiological

PURPOSE: The optimal fixation method for Pauwels type Ⅲ femoral neck fractures remains controversial. The finite element study aimed to compare the biomechanical performance of four internal fixation techniques: Interlocking Hip Screw (IHS), Femoral Neck System (FNS), Biplane Double-Supported Screw Fixation (BDSF), and Four Cannulated Screws (FCS).
METHODS: A full-length computed tomography (CT) scan of one volunteer's femur was selected and analyzed by Mimics. The femur model was reconstructed with Geomagic Studio, while SolidWorks enabled modeling of both the Pauwels Ⅲ fracture pattern and

The aim of this study was to evaluate in a large size cohort of SSc patients bone mineral density (BMD) and to analyze its possible determinants. 106 consecutive outpatients affected by SSc were enrolled and completely evaluated for bone metabolism and SSc characteristics. For the statistical analysis, we preferred Z score to BMD or T score since the population was composed of patients of different ages and of both sexes. Mean neck Z score was significantly lower than 0. No significant differences were found for other sites. Female patients were shown to have a total femur and neck Z score sig
