Liposarcoma is the second most common soft tissue sarcoma in adults after fibrosarcoma. Extremities and retroperitoneum are the most common sites. Intraabdominal and particulary mesocolic liposarcoma is a rare localisation. We report the case of a 64-year-old woman with a localized grade 1 liposarcoma of the right mesocolon treated by an extended right hemicolectomy. No further treatment was done because of the low grading and the disease-free margins. The patient is without any evidence of recurrence after one year.

Primary neoplasms of the mesentery are very rare. They are usually of mesenchymal origin and include desmoid tumor, lipoma, liposarcoma, and fibrosarcoma. Large defects of the hard palate can result from a congenital abnormality, trauma, or surgical treatment of oral masses. Closure of these defects can be challenging as dehiscence is common. Large, inoperable hard palate defects may be managed with prosthetic obturators, which recreate the separation between the oral and nasal cavities. This report describes the use of a palatal obturator to manage a large palatal defect that persisted after resection of a palatal fibrosarcoma. Three prior attempts at surgical closure of the defect had failed.

Cauda equina nerve sheath tumors are usually small, well-encapsulated tumors. Sometimes they may attain very large proportions, cause extensive bony changes, and resemble ependymomas in the cauda equina. They may also infiltrate into adjacent soft tissue planes and retroperitoneal spaces and yet be histologically benign. An awareness of this entity ensures aggressive surgical removal at the time of exploration. Primary neuro-fibrosarcomas or malignant changes in primary nerve sheath tumors of the cauda equina are seen in patients with neurofibromatosis.

Two sarcomas that appeared as distinct solitary nodules in the walls of ovarian mucinous cystic tumors are described. One of the tumors was a fibrosarcoma associated with a mucinous cystadenoma; the other was an undifferentiated sarcoma in a mucinous cystadenocarcinoma. Both patients died within 1 1/2 years of their operations with distant metastasis; one of them had had metastatic sarcoma in the para-aortic lymph nodes at the time of exploration. These two cases are the only well-documented examples of this unusual combination of tumor types.

Specimens of human breast cancers and fibrosarcomas were incubated for 4 to 72 hours as organ cultures. The effect of various concentrations of testosterone, progesterone, and 17-beta-estradiol on cell survival and multiplication was measured as changes in incorporation of H3-TdR into DNA. Both types of tumor reacted to the hormones; both stimulations and inhibitions were recorded. Statistical analysis of data demonstrated possible influence of factors other than hormone treatment. The specificity of hormone sensitivity assays in vitro is questioned.

In an experimental model of lung metastasis we have observed that more metastatic tumors are located on the pleura of the lung than in the parenchyma. The Flemish painter and sculptor Rik Wouters was born in Mechelen. He died from a fibrosarcoma of the right maxillary sinus at the age of 33. At the time, he was a soldier with the 9th Regiment of the Line of the Belgian Army during the Great War and he was imprisoned in Holland. His symptoms are reviewed; some comments are made relating to the errors in diagnosis, the quality of the treatment, its poor results, the optimism of the patient and his lucidity, and finally the moving confidence demonstrated by him in his successive physicians (Figures 1-4).

Data from 27 autopsy cases of renal sarcoma were investigated concerning the mode of metastases. The incidence was 1% in 2,651 cases of new growths of the kidney. Histologically nine were leiomyosarcoma, and five each were rhabdomyosarcoma and fibrosarcoma. The lungs, lymph nodes and liver were the most frequent sites of metastases. No significant differences in metastatic sites were noted among the histological types. Two cases or 7% had no metastasis and this percentage is comparable to that for other new growths of the kidney.
