Clinical and economic burden of respiratory syncytial virus in Spanish children: the BARI study.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection is a major cause of morbidity in children. However, its disease burden remains poorly understood, particularly outside of the hospital setting. Our study aimed to estimate the burden of medically attended acute lower respiratory infection (ALRI) cases potentially related to RSV in Spanish children. Longitudinal data from September 2017 to June 2018 of 51,292 children aged < 5 years old from the National Healthcare System (NHS) of two Spanish regions were used. Three case definitions were considered: (a) RSV-specific; (b) RSV-specific and unspecified

Racial/Ethnic and Nativity Inequalities in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: The Role of Psychosocial Stressors.

INTRODUCTION: Racial/ethnic and nativity disparities in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) persist in the United States. Identified factors … ic women reported higher stressors relative to U.S.-born White women. In fully adjusted models, the financial stress construct was associated with a 51% increased adjusted risk of GDM, and adding all stressors doubled the risk. Psychosocial stressors did not explain the elevated risk of GDM among foreign-born Black (adjusted risk ratio, 2.18; 95% confidence interv …

Grief and Economic Stressors by Sex, Gender, and Education: Associations With Alzheimer Disease-Related Outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The prevalence and impact of stressful life events (SLEs) on age-related and Alzheimer disease (AD)-related pathways may depend on social determinants including gender and education. We investigated whether specific SLEs are associated with AD pathology and neurodegeneration and how these associations differ by gender and education. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included cognitively unimpaired participants, most with a family history of sporadic AD, from the ALzheimer's and FAmilies (ALFA) cohort, based in Barcelona, Spain. Participants had available assessmen

Connecting psychosocial and personality characteristics with mental health outcomes. An Italian co-twin control study.

Exposure to stressful life events is common, and it is linked to increased psychological issues. As most likely people respond to stressors depending on environmental and genetic factors, we assessed in a twin study the association of some personal characteristics such as resilience and self-perception with anxiety, depression and stress in the late Covid pandemic period, to verify the underlying genetic and shared familial components. With this design, the strength of the associations was compared between individual-level and intrapair-level analyses. From June 2020 to December 2021, the Ital

Modeling costs and burden of informal caregiving for persons with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Informal caregiving contributes significantly to the health and well being of chronically ill persons. While a vast literature demonstrates this connection, the cost and financial burden of informal caregiving has received considerably less research attention, especially as it-pertains to bipolar disorder. AIMS OF THE STUDY: This paper develops an integrated burden model of informal caregiving, which is contrasted with other more traditional models of caregiving costs, and then uses these models to estimate the financial burden of bipolar disorder. The "goodness" of these various

The Medicine Success fund: financial support for widening participation medical students improves wellbeing and increases sense of belonging.

BACKGROUND: UK medicine is an elite profession engaging in widening participation (WP) efforts to diversify the workforce so as to better represent the society it serves, and thus, enhance patient care. Despite years of sector-wide efforts, medical students and doctors from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds remain minoritised in medicine. WP activities primarily focus on increasing access to medical degrees, while widening success for WP students once at university is underexplored or addressed. Socio-economic disadvantage shapes the experiences of WP medical students, who face unique f

Helping financially under-resourced unmarried mothers move forward and flourish: Feasibility findings from an innovative coaching-centered place-based initiative.

Longer-duration, holistic, cohort-based, coach-led interventions may be particularly effective in promoting both economic health and emotional well-being among unmarried mothers living in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. Aligning with the 1999 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) framework for program evaluation, this study presents a non-random pragmatic feasibility trial of Moms Moving Forward (MMF), a 12-month, community-centered, place-based initiative. MMF aims to improve financial stability and maternal mental health by building life skills and strengthening participants' sense of

Virtual Money and Emotional Reality: A Qualitative Analysis of Symbolic Issues in a Stock Market Simulation.

This article analyzes how novice investors emotionally experience a stock market simulation conducted with virtual money. Financial simulations are sometimes criticized because they do not reproduce the real financial consequences of investment decisions. However, the fifteen semi-structured interviews conducted after the simulation show that the absence of monetary loss does not eliminate the emotional intensity of the experience. Participants report stress, fear, frustration, disgust, disappointment, satisfaction, and pride. This article argues that virtual money shifts emotional responses t

The age-related changes in cartilage and osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is closely associated with aging, but its underlying mechanism is unclear. Recent publications were reviewed to elucidate the connection between aging and OA. With increasing OA incidence, more senior people are facing heavy financial and social burdens. Age-related OA pathogenesis is not well understood. Recently, it has been realized that age-related changes in other tissues besides articular cartilage may also contribute to OA development. Many factors including senescence-related secretory phenotypes, chondrocytes' low reactivity to growth factors, mitochondrial dysfunc

The impact of learning motivation on academic performance among low-income college students: the mediating roles of learning strategies and mental health.

Financial hardship can hinder university achievement, yet the mechanisms linking motivation to performance among low-income undergraduates remain underexplored. This two-wave study tracked 316 students from three public universities in eastern China over a six-month period. Measures included intrinsic, extrinsic, and amotivation, learning strategies, perceived stress, and grade point average (GPA). Structural equation modeling revealed that the proposed model explained over 64% of the variance in GPA. Intrinsic motivation was positively associated with GPA both directly and indirectly through
