Diversity of fleas (Siphonaptera) on small mammals within a subalpine ecosystem in the Nevado de Toluca Protected Area, State of Mexico.

In Mexico, few studies on the species of fleas associated with rodents in high mountain areas have been conducted, even though these mammals are mainly associated with these ectoparasites to a large extent, and it is a group of species that have a wide distribution and great diversity. The present study determined the diversity of ectoparasites (fleas) in rodents from a subalpine grassland within the Nevado de Toluca Flora and Fauna Protection Area, State of Mexico. Rodent sampling was carried out during the dry season (March and April) and rainy season (August and November) of 2017, at an ele

Surveillance of Fleas and Their Small Mammal Hosts for Plague Risks in Some Main Seaports of the Islands of the Southwestern Indian Ocean.

Since ancient times, seaports have been the hot spots for plague introduction into free countries. Infected ship rats reached new areas, and epizootics occurred prior to human infection via flea bites. Beginning in the 1920s/1930s, rodent and flea surveillance was carried out as part of plague hazard management in seaports of the world. Nowadays, such activity is not done regularly. In the southwestern Indian Ocean (SWIO) region, plague surveillance is of great importance given plague endemicity in Madagascar and thus the incurred risk for neighboring islands. This study reports animal-based s

The combined effect of bromadiolone and ivermectin (iBr) in controlling both rodents and their fleas.

Rodent pests not only cause severe agricultural loss but also spread zoonotic pathogens to human beings. Anticoagulant rodenticides are widely used to decrease the population densities of rodents but often lead to the spillover of ectoparasites because fleas and ticks may gather on surviving rodents. Therefore, it is necessary to kill fleas and ticks before culling rodents to minimize the risk of pathogen transmission. In this study, we used a mixture of ivermectin (an antiparasitic drug) and bromadiolone (an anticoagulant rodenticide) to control both rodent and flea/tick abundances. We found

Efficacy of an oral formulation of afoxolaner and milbemycin oxime against Tunga penetrans in naturally infected dogs.

BACKGROUND: The sand flea Tunga penetrans is one of the agents of tungiasis, an important parasitic skin disease affecting humans and several mammalian species. Tungiasis is mainly observed in disadvantaged rural and peripheral urban communities in Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa. The dog is a major reservoir of Tunga fleas. Hematophagous adult female Tunga spp. embed and grow in their host's epidermis and cause cutaneous inflammatory disorders. NexGard Spectra® is an orally administered endectocide for dogs, a co-formulation of the isoxazoline afoxolaner and the macrocyclic lactone milbe

Bartonella Species in Cambodia, Ghana, Laos, and Peru: Results from Vector and Serosurveys.

Background: Bartonella species are fastidious gram-negative vector-borne bacteria with a wide range of mammalian reservoirs. While it is understood that some species of Bartonella are human pathogens, the extent of human exposure to Bartonella species (both pathogenic and nonpathogenic) is yet to be fully understood. Materials and Methods: To this end, residual sera from participants enrolled in undifferentiated fever studies in Cambodia, Ghana, Laos, and Peru were screened for the presence of IgG antibodies against Bartonella quintana and Bartonella henselae, using the FOCUS diagnostics Dual

FLEA CONTROL ON PRAIRIE DOGS (CYNOMYS SPP.) WITH FIPRONIL BAIT PELLETS: POTENTIAL PLAGUE MITIGATION TOOL FOR RAPID FIELD APPLICATION AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION.

Sylvatic plague is a widespread, primarily flea-vectored disease in western North America. Because plague is highly lethal to endangered black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes, BFFs) and the prairie dogs (Cynomys spp., PDs) on which BFFs depend for habitat and prey, minimizing the impacts of plague is a priority at BFF reintroduction sites. We developed a new, flour-based bait pellet containing 0.84 mg of fipronil and weighing ∼1.25 g (FipBits). We measured the degree and duration of flea control on black-tailed PDs (C. ludovicianus) in Montana and on Gunnison's PDs (C. gunnisoni) in Arizona,

Pet dogs transfer veterinary medicines to the environment.

Worldwide, the number of pet dogs increases yearly, and as a result so does the use of veterinary medicines for flea and tick control. We investigated the potential transfer of veterinary flea products from dogs to the environment in a 'proof of principle' experiment. For this purpose, samples of hair, urine, and water after swimming were investigated. Nine dogs were recruited for this study, eight of which had been recently treated with an ectoparasiticide product. Hair and urine samples were tested for afoxalaner, fluralaner, fipronil and imidacloprid. Interestingly, contamination with ectop

Evaluating the potentials of randomised integrated control trial on tungiasis in a South-western Nigerian community.

Considering the fact that new, safe and incorporable treatment alternatives to therapeutic prophylaxis for tungiasis are lacking and sometimes proving difficult, this present study evaluated the potentials of integrating control approach involving focal premise treatment using 5% emulsifiable concentrate of cypermethrin, and topical application of Piper guineense oil with personal protection. Of the 90 houses selected, their floors were classified into paved rooms & unpaved verandas, paved verandas & unpaved rooms, paved rooms & verandas, and unpaved rooms & verandas, and tested for the presen

Similarities and seasonal variations in bacterial communities from the blood of rodents and from their flea vectors.

Vector-borne microbes are subject to the ecological constraints of two distinct microenvironments: that in the arthropod vector and that in the blood of its vertebrate host. Because the structure of bacterial communities in these two microenvironments may substantially affect the abundance of vector-borne microbes, it is important to understand the relationship between bacterial communities in both microenvironments and the determinants that shape them. We used pyrosequencing analyses to compare the structure of bacterial communities in Synosternus cleopatrae fleas and in the blood of their Ge

Identification of Ectoparasites Infesting Domestic Chickens and Evaluation of Control Practices Across Production Systems in and Around Dire Dawa, Ethiopia.

Ectoparasites threaten poultry health and productivity by decreasing egg production, lowering meat yields, and transmitting diseases. This study is aimed at determining the prevalence and identifying the main species of ectoparasites, as well as assessing the current control practices in poultry production systems in Dire Dawa. A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to May 2024. Data collection involved visual observation of the entire bodies of chickens and interviewing the producers. Out of 768 chickens examined, 577 were infested with one or more ectoparasite species, with an over

North Spain (Burgos) wild mammals ectoparasites.

Twenty-seven species of arthropods were collected from 105 wild mammals, six wolves Canis lupus (Linnaeus, 1758) included. A total of 87 animals (82.8%) harboured some ectoparasites. Ticks were found in 60% of the samples, fleas in 51.4%, chewing-lice in 3.8%, and others (Mesostigmata and hippoboscids) in 3.8%. Moreover, 42.5% were single infestation and 57.5% mixed. Some of the species were new records for a host in spanish country such as Trichodectes canis (De Géer, 1778), Ixodes trianguliceps (Birula, 1895), Ceratophyllus (Monopsyllus) S. sciurorum (Schrank, 1803) and Paraceras melis melis

Treatment of tungiasis using a tea tree oil-based gel formulation: protocol for a randomised controlled proof-of-principle trial.

INTRODUCTION: Tungiasis (sand flea disease or jigger infestation) is a neglected tropical disease caused by penetration of female sand fleas, Tunga penetrans, in the skin. The disease inflicts immense pain and suffering on millions of people, particularly children, in Latin America, the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa. Currently, there is no standard treatment for tungiasis, and a simple, safe and effective tungiasis treatment option is required. Tea tree oil (TTO) has long been used as a parasiticidal agent against ectoparasites such as headlice, mites and fleas with proven safety and effica

Epidemiological prediction of the distribution of insects of medical significance: comparative distributions of fleas and sucking lice on the rat host Rattus norvegicus in Yunnan Province, China.

Determining the distribution patterns of ectoparasites is important for predicting the spread of vector-borne diseases. A simple epidemiological model was used to compare the distributions of two different taxa of ectoparasitic insects, sucking lice (Insecta: Siphonaptera) and fleas (Insecta: Anoplura), on the same rodent host, Rattus norvegicus Berkenhout (Rodentia: Muridae), in Yunnan Province, China. Correlations between mean abundance and prevalence were determined. Both fleas and sucking lice were aggregated on their hosts, and sucking lice showed a higher degree of aggregation than fleas

Peromyscus maniculatus, a possible reservoir host of Borrelia garinii from the Gannet Islands off Newfoundland and Labrador.

Thirty-five deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, were trapped on Gannet Cluster 2 (GC-2), one of a group of islands numbered by convention in the Gannet Island Archipelago, and examined for ectoparasites. One species each of Acari (Ixodes uriae) and Siphonaptera (Orchopeas leucopus) were recovered. Samples of mice favored males to females (3.4∶1). Twenty-nine percent (10) of the mice were free of ectoparasites. Males were more heavily parasitized than females when both parasites were considered. No ticks were recovered from the female mice, while the males that were parasitized carried adult Ixo
