Walking Drosophila navigate complex plumes using stochastic decisions biased by the timing of odor encounters.

How insects navigate complex odor plumes, where the location and timing of odor packets are uncertain, remains unclear. Here we imaged complex odor plumes simultaneously with freely-walking flies, quantifying how behavior is shaped by encounters with individual odor packets. We found that navigation was stochastic and did not rely on the continuous modulation of speed or orientation. Instead, flies turned stochastically with stereotyped saccades, whose direction was biased upwind by the timing of prior odor encounters, while the magnitude and rate of saccades remained constant. Further, flies

Ultraviolet light illuminates the avian nature of the Berlin Archaeopteryx skeleton.

The question of whether the iconic avialan Archaeopteryx was capable of active flapping flight or only passive gliding is still unresolved. This study contributes to this debate by reporting on two key aspects of this fossil that are visible under ultraviolet (UV) light. In contrast to previous studies, we show that most of the vertebral column of the Berlin Archaeopteryx possesses intraosseous pneumaticity, and that pneumatic structures also extend beyond the anterior thoracic vertebrae in other specimens of Archaeopteryx. With a minimum Pneumaticity Index (PI) of 0.39, Archaeopteryx had a mu

Cohousing Male Mice with and without Segmental Bone Defects.

Spaceflight results in bone loss like that associated with osteoporosis or decreased weight-bearing (for example, high-energy trauma such as explosive injuries and automobile accidents). Thus, the unique spaceflight laboratory on the International Space Station presents the opportunity to test bone healing agents during weightlessness. We are collaborating with NASA and the US Army to study bone healing in spaceflight. Given the unique constraints of spaceflight, study design optimization was required. Male mice were selected primarily because their femur is larger than females', allowing for

Design and stable flight of a 21 g insect-like tailless flapping wing micro air vehicle with angular rates feedback control.

An insect-like tailless flapping wing micro air vehicle (FW-MAV) without feedback control eventually becomes unstable after takeoff. Flying an insect-like tailless FW-MAV is more challenging than flying a bird-like tailed FW-MAV, due to the difference in control principles. This work introduces the design and controlled flight of an insect-like tailless FW-MAV, named KUBeetle. A combination of four-bar linkage and pulley-string mechanisms was used to develop a lightweight flapping mechanism that could achieve a high flapping amplitude of approximately 190°. Clap-and-flings at dorsal and ventra

Convergent acoustic field of view in echolocating bats.

Most echolocating bats exhibit a strong correlation between body size and the frequency of maximum energy in their echolocation calls (peak frequency), with smaller species using signals of higher frequency than larger ones. Size-signal allometry or acoustic detection constraints imposed on wavelength by preferred prey size have been used to explain this relationship. Here we propose the hypothesis that smaller bats emit higher frequencies to achieve directional sonar beams, and that variable beam width is critical for bats. Shorter wavelengths relative to the size of the emitter translate int

Autonomic reaction to vestibular damage.

The vestibular system provides inputs to many neurons in the brain stem that participate in autonomic control. This multiplicity of vestibular-autonomic connections plays a variety of roles. Whereas it has been known for decades that unilateral vestibular lesions can result in motion sickness, recent data suggest that the vestibular system participates in making adjustments in blood pressure and respiration that are necessary to maintain homeostasis during movement and changes in posture. Animals with bilateral vestibular lesions are more susceptible to posturally related hypotension than vest

New technology meets clinical knowledge: Diagnosing Streptococcus suis meningitis in a 67-year-old man.

Strepotocuccus suis (S. suis) infection is known to be caused by the exposure to contaminated animals, specifically pigs and wild boars. This pathogen can cause bacterial meningitis, and one report indicated that it is the most common pathogen causing bacterial meningitis in Vietnam (Mai et al., 2008). A 67-year-old man was diagnosed with S. suis bacteremia and meningitis. In general, identification of this pathogen using standard biochemical methods takes time. We successfully diagnosed S. suis bacteremia in this patient, however, using the relatively new technology called Matrix-Assisted Las

Physiological mechanisms of adaptation to weightlessness. Data from experiments with animals in earth-orbit biosatellites.

Four experiments were carried out with mammals (white laboratory rats) in Kosmos biosatellites. The experimental results indicate that rather prolonged weightlessness does not cause pathological changes in internal organs. Changes were discovered in the metabolic and hormonal status of the organisms, allowing us to consider an 18-22-day space flight as a moderately stressful activity. Changes in the musculoskeletal system involved atrophy of particular muscle groups, adaptive transformation of the contractile properties of some of them, osteoporosis, and decreased durability of bony tissue. Multisystemic corynebacteriosis caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis in a captive Brazilian porcupine (Coendouprehensilis).

A captive, 3-year-old, male Brazilian porcupine (Coendou prehensilis) was found dead in its enclosure at a wildlife facility in the USA, with no prior clinical signs reported. At necropsy, the animal was in poor body condition with malocclusion of the maxillary incisors. Numerous tan-to-white, firm nodules, ranging from 0.1 to 1.5 cm in diameter, were present in the lungs, heart, pancreas and right kidney. Histologically, multifocal to coalescing pyogranulomas composed of foamy macrophages, multinucleated giant cells and peripheral lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates surrounded central areas of case

Isolation of Lancefieldella parvula in Secondary Infection from Human Bite: A Rare Occurrence.

BACKGROUND: Human bite infections most commonly manifest as skin and soft tissue infections with lower infection rates than animal bites. Lancefieldella parvula is an anaerobe Gram-positive coccus found in human oral mucosa. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 28-year-old healthy woman who suffered a deep skin and soft tissue infection in the left hand after a human bite. She presented with signs and symptoms of infection unresponsive to antibiotics, requiring admission for surgical debridement. Microbiological cultures were taken from the wound and empirical treatment was initiated w

Animal defense strategies and anxiety disorders.

Anxiety disorders are classified according to symptoms, time course and therapeutic response. Concurrently, the experimental analysis of defensive behavior has identified three strategies of defense that are shared by different animal species, triggered by situations of potential, distal and proximal predatory threat, respectively. The first one consists of cautious exploration of the environment for risk assessment. The associated emotion is supposed to be anxiety and its pathology, Generalized Anxiety Disorder. The second is manifested by oriented escape or by behavioral inhibition, being re

Thermal windows on Brazilian free-tailed bats facilitate thermoregulation during prolonged flight.

The Brazilian free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) experiences challenging thermal conditions while roosting in hot caves, flying during warm daylight conditions, and foraging at cool high altitudes. Using thermal infrared cameras, we identified hot spots along the flanks of free-ranging Brazilian free-tailed bats, ventral to the extended wings. These hot spots are absent in syntopic cave myotis (Myotis velifer), a species that forages over relatively short distances, and does not engage in long-distance migration. We hypothesized that the hot spots, or "radiators," on Brazilian free-tailed

Simulated microgravity predisposes kidney to injury through promoting intrarenal artery remodeling.

Spaceflight-induced multi-organ dysfunction affects the health of astronauts and the safety of in-orbit flight. However, the effect of microgravity on the kidney and the underlying mechanisms are unknown. In the current study, we used a hindlimb unweighting (HU) animal model to simulate microgravity and employed histological analysis, ischemia-reperfusion experiments, renal ultrasonography, bioinformatics analysis, isometric force measurement, and other molecular experimental settings to evaluate the effects of microgravity on the kidneys and the underlying mechanisms involved in this transiti

Three-dimensional measurements of animal paths using handheld unconstrained GoPro cameras and VSLAM software.

I present the system PATMOS (paths and tessellated meshes from ORB_SLAM2) for measuring three-dimensional paths of animalsin situusing two handheld GoPro cameras and a small spatial reference object. Animal paths were triangulated from mobile camera positions obtained from a modified version of ORB_SLAM2, an open-source visual simultaneous localization and mapping software package. In addition to path calculation, this process provided a virtual three-dimensional surface approximation to the environment from which path to environment distances can be quantified. PATMOS can also fit a tranquil

Behavioural trait covaries with immune responsiveness in a wild passerine.

Immune system is highly integrated with the nervous and endocrine systems, which is thought to result in covariation between behavioural syndromes and stress- and immune-associated diseases. Very little is known about the associations between behaviour and immune traits in wild animals. Here we describe such an association in passerine birds, the greenfinches (Carduelis chloris). When wild-caught greenfinches are brought into captivity, some individuals damage their tail feathers against cage walls due to excited behaviour, while others retain their feathers in intact condition. We show that d

Homing pigeon navigation relies on superparamagnetic macrophages under overcast conditions.

Birds use a variety of navigational strategies, including the geomagnetic field, especially when other cues are not available, such as under overcast or nocturnal conditions. Magnetite particles in the beak, cryptochromes in the eye, cellular ion-channel alterations, and changes in the vestibular system have been proposed to explain magnetoreception, but the exact mechanisms remain debated. Here, we used physical, morphological, functional, and genomic assays to identify the presence of superparamagnetic macrophages in the liver. We found that after macrophage depletion, pigeons flying under o

Mosquito-inspired active tactile perception for indoor navigation and escape of a rigid-soft coupling blimp robot.

For autonomous navigation in indoor environments, aerial robots mostly take cameras, LiDAR, ultrasonic ranging sensors, and other devices for collision avoidance, rarely using tactile sensors. However, cameras are susceptible to lighting conditions, LiDAR requires high computational resources, and ultrasonic sensors have blind zones when measuring at short distances. In contrast, insects and rodents can perceive their surroundings via tactile sensing even in complete darkness. Inspired by the escape strategy of mosquitoes that navigate along boundaries using tactile sensing in confined spaces,

A minimal 3D model of mosquito flight behaviour around the human baited bed net.

BACKGROUND: Advances in digitized video-tracking and behavioural analysis have enabled accurate recording and quantification of mosquito flight and host-seeking behaviours, facilitating development of individual (agent) based models at much finer spatial scales than previously possible. METHODS: Quantified behavioural parameters were used to create a novel virtual testing model, capable of accurately simulating indoor flight behaviour by a virtual population of host-seeking mosquitoes as they interact with and respond to simulated stimuli from a human-occupied bed net. The model is described,

Behavior of Japanese tree frogs under microgravity on MIR and in parabolic flight.

Japanese tree frogs (Hyla japonica) were flown to the space station MIR and spent eight days in orbit during December, 1990. Under microgravity, their postures and behaviors were observed and recorded. On the MIR, floating frogs stretched four legs out, bent their bodies backward and expanded their abdomens. Frogs on a surface often bent their neck backward and walked backwards. This behavior was observed on parabolic flights and resembles the retching behavior of sick frogs on land--a possible indicator of motion sickness. Observations on MIR were carried out twice to investigate the frog's a
