Polioencephalomalacia (PEM) was induced in calves by feeding a semipurified, low-roughage diet of variable copper and molybdenum composition. Protein-energy malnutrition is commonly observed in infants with congenital heart disease (CHD). The effect of a hypercaloric formula on nutritional recovery was evaluated in malnourished infants with congenital heart diseases. We retrospectively studied 30 infants (mean age 9 months, range 2 to 21) with CHD along 60 to 90 days in a closed nutritional recovery center. To evaluate the effect of the popular use of formula diets in the treatment of moderate obesity two regimens have been standardized: (1) formula diet replacing three of five daily meals (partial meal replacement (PMR, 1000 kcal (4.19 MJ] and (2) formula diet taken as five pre-meals (pre-meal satiation, PMS greater than or equal to 565 kcal (greater than or equal to 2.37 MJ]. Weight loss and compliance have been evaluated in a prospective 12 weeks randomized clinical trial with allocation to one of the two regimens or to a control group treated with a 1000 kcal (4.19 MJ) conventional diet (CD).

Positive nitrogen balance and preservation of body weight and total proteins were demonstrated in 26 patients undergoing extensive upper gastrointestinal operations who were randomized to receive elemental diet by a needle catheter jejunostomy. The authors report their experience with early postoperative feedings in a variety of pediatric surgical patients utilizing a needle catheter jejunostomy. A small caliber catheter, similar to that used for antecubital central venous cannulation, is inserted in the antimesenteric border of the jejunum providing a subserosal tunnel.
