We present an unusual case involving the simultaneous dislocation of the trans-scapho-retro-lunate in the right wrist and a posterolateral dislocation in the right elbow joint with a distal radius fracture in a 23-year-old male with no notable medical history. These injuries occurred when he fell from a height of around 12 meters onto his outstretched right hand. The patient presented to the hospital in a normal upper limb trauma position with no discomfort to critical functions. Predominant symptoms at the emergency department were discomfort in the right wrist, hand, and ipsilateral elbow, a

Two patients who sustained respectively dislocation and fracture dislocation of the hip joint as a result of traffic accidents and who initially went to traditional bone setters for treatment are reported. The native and modern orthodox treatment given to them are compared and analysed. It is suggested that certain types of fracture cases should not be managed by traditional bone setters; and that a careful assessment of the practice of traditional bone setting be made before a marriage between orthodox and traditional medicine is advocated.

Traumatic dislocations of the fourth and fifth metacarpals, in conjunction with dorsal hamate fractures, are a common entity that can lead to the instability of the fourth and fifth carpometacarpal (CMC) joints. The fracture of the hamate, usually in a coronal dorsal shear configuration, can lead to the dorsal subluxation of the hamatometacarpal joint. Open reduction and internal fixation of the hamate bone with a dorsally applied buttress plate can re-establish a stable and congruent joint surface and anatomically align the articular surfaces of the small and ring finger CMC joints. We presen

Fractures of the femoral head combined with a dislocation of the hip are rare injuries. In the period from 1975 to 1993 nine of our 231 operatively treated patients who had a hip injury sustained a Pipkin fracture. According to the history of our patients and the results of the last 18 years we discuss the possibilities of diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of the fracture of the femoral head with dislocation of the hip.

A retrospective study was undertaken to analyse and compare the results of Harrington instrumentation with postural reduction and nursing in patients with fractures and fracture-dislocations of the lumbar spine. Thirty patients were treated by postural reduction and nursing, and 38 underwent early surgical reduction and internal fixation with Harrington instrumentation, together with a posterior fusion in three patients and an anterior fusion at the level of the fracture in another two patients. External splintage was used in only one patient in the series. At an average follow up of 5.9 years

RATIONALE: Irreducible femoral head fracture-dislocation (FHFD) with concomitant ipsilateral irreducible intertrochanteric fracture significantly increase the difficulty, which undescribed previously. We recorded a surgical strategy for the rare and high-energy injuries, and conducted a follow-up over a period of 4.5 months.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 50-year-old male experienced a motor vehicle collision to the left hip. The assessment by X-ray and 3-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) scan of the left hip confirmed a left posterior hip dislocation with an associated displaced infrafoveal fem

The association of ipsilateral talar and calcaneal fractures is an uncommon combination and is typically the result of a high-energy trauma. It is often associated with comminution, marked fracture displacement, and soft-tissue compromise. Obtaining satisfactory clinical and radiographic results is very challenging. Residual deformities, multiple procedures, and limitations are usually the norm. Therefore, studies have suggested that primary arthrodesis may represent the best option of surgical treatment. In this study, we report a case of a 30-year-old male patient with a rare combination of

Bilateral fracture-dislocation of the talus is a rare occurrence. It represents 0.06% of the dislocations and 2% of the traumas of the talus. We report the case of a 29-year-old patient with an exposed bilateral fracture of the talus following a plane accident. On the right ankle, the patient had a fracture-dislocation Hawkin 3 Gustilo II, on the left ankle presented a Hawkin 4 Gustilo IIIB. The patient was treated within six hours from the trauma. We reduced the dislocation and performed an osteotomy of the tibial malleolus and osteosynthesis of the fracture with screws. The definitive stabil

An exceptional fracture-dislocation of the femoral head with associated trochanteric and shaft fracture of the same femur in a severely multi-injured 25-year-old man has been treated by open reduction of the dislocation and internal fixation of the trochanteric and shaft fractures, with a 130 degrees and a straight plate, respectively. At the 27-months follow-up examination the patient showed good evidence of fracture healing, and avascular necrosis of the femoral head had not developed, even though there had been a 5-day delay in reduction of the dislocation. The reported observation not only

INTRODUCTION: Radial head fractures are consistently part of a terrible triad of the elbow and can occur in association with Monteggia fracture-dislocations, transolecranon fractures, and their variations. Understanding the degree of comminution of the radial head fracture and the location of fragments determines the course of action to be taken.
OBJECTIVES: To correlate fracture-dislocations with the pattern of radial head fracture (number of fragments) and involvement in the proximal radioulnar region.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study (level II) of patients undergoing surgery f

Fracture-dislocations of the elbow are a spectrum of injuries that have varying outcomes and complications, such as limited range of motion and long-term pain. The Monteggia fracture-dislocation and terrible triad fracture-dislocation are 2 such injury patterns that occur secondary to different mechanisms. This study sought to compare complication profiles and patient outcomes associated with these 2 distinct injury patterns. A retrospective chart review of all adult patients treated by 1 of 3 orthopedic traumatologists at a major academic center for operative fixation for either a Monteggia f

We conducted a retrospective review of six patients with carpometacarpal (CMC) ⅘ fracture-dislocations managed with ORIF by a single surgeon between October 2006 and August 2017. An open, dorsal approach to the hamate was used with a combination of interfragmentary screw fixation and Kirschner wire reduction in the CMC joints. At a mean of 96 days follow-up (range: 31-265), all patients had recovered wrist motion, excellent grip strength, and complete resolution of pain. There were no complications or reoperations during the postoperative period. Radiographic review showed restoration of anato

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the treatment methods of mandibular symphyseal fracture combined with dislocated intracapsular condylar fractures (MSF&DICF) and to compare the effect of different treatment methods of condylar fractures.
METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with MSF&DICF were included in this study. Twenty-two sites were treated by open reduction, and all the medial condylar fragments were fixed with titanium screws; whereas the other 22 sites underwent close treatment. The surgical effect between these 2 groups was compared based on clinical examination and radiographic examination results

Etiology and outcome of 155 patients with midfoot fractures between 1972 and 1997 were analyzed to create a basis for treatment optimization. Cause of injuries were traffic accidents (72.2%), falls (11.6%), blunt injuries (7.7%) and others (5.8%). Isolated midfoot fractures (I) were found in 55 (35.5%) cases, Lisfranc fracture dislocations (L) in 49 (31.2%), Chopart-Lisfranc fracture dislocations (CL) in 26 (16.8%) and Chopart fracture dislocations (C) in 25 (16%). One hundred and forty eight (95%) of the midfoot fractures were treated operatively; 30 with closed reduction, 115 with open reduc…

Vertebral fractures with incomplete paraplegia should be reduced immediately. If the myelogram still shows compression of the medulla, an anterior decompression should be performed. All severe injuries to the cervical spine are stabilised with anterior bone block and plate osteosynthesis. Generally fractures of the lumbar spine are treated conservatively with reduction and plaster jacket. Operative treatment is necessary in dislocations with locked facets, secondary instability, and in cases with traumatic spondylolisthesis. Reduction and stabilisation can be performed either by interbody fusi
