Intermediate- to long-term outcomes of endoscopic transpapillary gallbladder stenting in patients with gallstone-related disease: a 10-year single-center experience.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic transpapillary gallbladder stenting (ETGS) can be a bridging therapy to elective cholecystectomy or a permanent gallbladder drainage method in patients with symptomatic gallbladder disease who are awaiting cholecystectomy or are unfit for surgery, respectively. We evaluated the intermediate- to long-term outcomes of ETGS in these groups. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 234 patients (acute cholecystitis = 147), who were unfit for surgery (n = 50) or had deferred cholecystectomy (n = 184) and who underwent ETGS between 2012 and 2021. A 7-Fr, 15-cm, double-pigtail pla

Evidence for sphincter dysfunction in patients with gallstone associated pancreatitis: effect of ceruletide in patients undergoing cholecystectomy for gallbladder disease and gallstone associated pancreatitis.

The functional activity of the sphincter of Oddi complex has been examined by ceruletide manometry in patients undergoing cholecystectomy with a normal peroperative cholangiogram. In Group I (n = 14), which included patients with previous acute cholecystitis/biliary colic, the sphincter activity appeared to be normal and responded to intravenous ceruletide by a marked relaxation with a significant fall in both the infusion and postinfusion pressures. In patients undergoing cholecystectomy for gallstone-associated pancreatitis (n = 8), the sphincter exhibited manometric features of hypotonia wi

Incidental Gallbladder Cancer After Cholecystectomy for Presumed Benign Biliary Disease: A Sixteen-Year Retrospective Cohort Study from a Tertiary Referral Center.

Background and Objectives: Incidental gallbladder cancer (IGBC) is an uncommon but clinically important diagnosis after cholecystectomy for presumed benign biliary disease. This study aimed to determine the incidence of invasive IGBC in a large cholecystectomy cohort and to describe its clinicopathological profile, stage-specific management pathway, and exploratory univariable survival associations. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all cholecystectomies performed between January 2010 and December 2025 at a tertiary referral center (n = 19,798). Patients with known preoperativ

Global, regional, and national burden of gallbladder and biliary tract cancer, 1990 to 2021 and predictions to 2045: an analysis of the Global Burden of Disease study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Identifying past, present, and future temporal trends in gallbladder and biliary tract cancer (GBTC) can increase public awareness and promote changes in prevention and treatment strategies. METHODS: The incidence and death rates of GBTC between 1990 and 2021 were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease study 2021 and assessed according to country, region, year, age, and sex. Time trends were measured using the average annual percentage change (AAPC) and projections of the burden of disease for 2022 to 2045 were made using the Bayesian age-period-cohort model. RESULTS: In 202

Optimal surgical technique, use of intra-operative cholangiography (IOC), and management of acute gallbladder disease: the results of a nation-wide survey in the UK and Ireland.

INTRODUCTION: There is debate on optimal techniques that reduce bile duct injury during laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). A national survey of Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (AUGIS) members was carried out to determine current surgical practice for gallstones, including the use of intra-operative cholangiography (IOC) or critical view of safety to reduce the risk of bile duct injury. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: An anonymous postal survey was sent to all 417 AUGIS members. Data on grade of surgeon, place of work (district general hospital, teaching), sub

A cross-sectional analysis and forward projection of China's gallbladder and biliary-tract cancer burden: Insights from the 2021 Global Burden of Disease Study.

Gallbladder and biliary tract cancer (GBTC) remains highly lethal. We examined 32-year epidemiological trends in China and projected outcomes to 2050. Using 2021 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data, we extracted annual GBTC incident and prevalent cases, deaths, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for 1990 to 2021, stratified by sex, age, and socio-demographic index (SDI). The age-standardized rates (ASRs) were calculated, and ARIMA models forecast 2050 incidence and mortality. Globally, GBTC risk rises after age 60 and correlates with SDI (R = 0.588). In China, cases increased from 17,0

Laboratory and genetic characteristic associated with gallbladder-related outcomes in sickle cell disease in Brazil: results from the REDS-III multicenter cohort study.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary disorder characterized by HBB variants, leading to chronic hemolytic anemia and vaso-occlusion. Hepatobiliary complications, including cholelithiasis, are common but underreported. This study investigated the rates and risk factors for cholelithiasis, cholecystitis, and cholecystectomy in a large Brazilian SCD cohort. Data from 2,778 individuals across six referral centers in the REDS-III Brazilian SCD cohort were analyzed. Clinical, laboratory, and genetic data were obtained retrospectively at enrollment and prospectively during follow-up. Gallbladder
