COMT genotype, gambling activity, and cognition.

Neuropsychological studies of adults with problem gambling indicate impairments across multiple cognitive domains. Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) plays a unique role in the regulation of dopamine in the prefrontal cortex, and has been implicated in the cognitive dysfunction evident in problem gambling. This study examined adults with varying levels of gambling behavior to determine whether COMT genotype was associated with differences in gambling symptoms and cognitive functioning. 260 non-treatment-seeking adults aged 18-29 years with varying degrees of gambling behavior provided saliva …

Pathological gambling: understanding relapses and dropouts.

There is little available information on the factors that influence relapses and dropouts during therapy for pathological gambling (PG). The aim of this study was to determine socio-demographic, clinical, personality, and psychopathological predictors of relapse and dropout in a sample of pathological gamblers seeking treatment. A total of 566 consecutive outpatients diagnosed with PG according to DSM-IV-TR criteria were included. All patients underwent an individualized cognitive-behavioral treatment program. We analyzed predictors of relapse during 6months of treatment and during the subsequ…

Problem gambling - aetiology, identification and management.

BACKGROUND: Gambling is a mainstream activity across Australia, with increasing accessibility. It is also a significant public health issue, with around 395 000 Australians experiencing harm from problem gambling. OBJECTIVE: This article reviews current evidence relating to the classification and prevalence of problem gambling in Australia, why problems develop, and how to assess and manage gambling presentations within primary care. DISCUSSION: People affected by problem gambling are not a homogenous group in terms of course or onset. Screening is important, especially where financial probl…

Iowa gambling task in Parkinson's disease.

Cognitive impairments are common in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) from the early stages. Recent studies reported that medicated PD patients have poor performances, with respect to age-matched healthy controls, in a decision-making task like the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), which detects the ability to alter choice behavior in response to fluctuations in reward contingencies. The IGT principally activates functions related to the orbitofrontal cortex, which plays a crucial role in the generation of outcome expectancies and processing of rewards. The analysis of IGT performances of PD pati…

Pharmacological treatment of adolescent pathological gambling.

Adolescents as a group appear to constitute a high-risk population for gambling problems. Given the rates of adolescent problem gambling and its impact on affected individuals and their families, effective treatments are important. There are, however, no pharmacological treatments for pathological gambling in children, adolescents, or adults that are currently approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Additionally, no studies have investigated directly the safety and efficacy of pharmacological treatments for pathological gambling in adolescents. This article reviews th…

Electronic gaming machine gambling: measuring motivation.

Electronic gambling machines (EGMs) are known to be a particularly risky form of gambling (Petry. Addiction 98(5):645-655, 2003). It is vital that researchers and clinicians are aware of factors which could lead to people having problems with this form. Gambling motivation is one such factor. This study developed a measure of EGM gambling motivations based on the results of qualitative research conducted with EGM problem gamblers and experienced counsellors (Thomas et al. Int J Mental Health Addiction 7:97-107, 2009). A community based sample of 232 females (M = 29.60 years of age, SD = 15.41 …

Pathological Gambling: Biological and Clinical Considerations.

Pathological gambling (PG) is categorized as an impulse control disorder (ICD). Phenomenological, neurobiological and pharmacological data suggest similarities in the pathophysiologies of substance use disorders (SUDs) and PG. Both behavioral and pharmacological approaches, including those that have been empirically validated for SUDs, have shown promise in the treatment of PG. Findings from biological studies of PG are reviewed, and treatment approaches based on controlled studies are summarized.

Brain maps of Iowa gambling task.

BACKGROUND: Somatic Marker Hypothesis (SMH), based on clinical observations, delineates neuronal networks for interpreting consciousness generation and decision-making. The Iowa gambling task (IGT) was designed to verify the SMH. However, more and more behavioral and brain imaging studies had reported incongruent results that pinpointed a need to re-evaluate the central representations of SMH. The current study used event-related fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to examine neural correlates of anticipation vs. outcome, wins vs. losses, and differential decks' contingencies of IGT. …

Disordered gambling among Chinese casino employees.

A previous study suggests that casino employees are at higher risk for disordered gambling than non-casino employees. The present study examined the cognitive correlates of the gambling involvement of Chinese casino employees. These potential cognitive correlates included attitudes toward the gaming industry and gambling activities, perceived job meaningfulness, and job stress. One hundred and nineteen Chinese respondents (M = 57; F = 62) working as dealers in Macao casinos were recruited through convenience sampling to fill out a questionnaire. The results revealed that about 7% of the respon…

Problem gambling and intimate partner violence.

This study examined the prevalence and severity of intimate partner violence (IPV) among 248 problem gamblers (43 women, 205 men) recruited from newspaper advertisements. The main outcome measures used were the Canadian Problem Gambling Index, the Conflicts Tactics Scale-2, the State Trait Anger Expression Inventory-2, the drug and alcohol section of the Addiction Severity Index and the substance use section of the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV. In this sample, 62.9% of participants reported perpetrating and/or being the victims of IPV in the past year, with 25.4% reporting perp…

The five-factor gambling motivation model.

Pathological gambling is a serious social issue, but the underlying psychological motivations are poorly understood. This study developed a five-factor gambling motivation model. The five factors that motivate gambling (socialization, amusement, avoidance, excitement, and monetary motives) were derived from study data obtained from 240 college students. The structure of the five-factor model was confirmed by factor analysis of responses from 234 frequent gamblers. We then compared the "monetary motive version" of this model with the "parallel version" to determine which model more accurately d…

Commentary: illegal behavior and pathological gambling.

BACKGROUND: The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) covers all aspects and levels of human functioning. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to find out whether the ICF can be used in everyday prosthetics and orthotics (P&O) clinical practice for description of human functioning, and whether it can demonstrate the influence of a prosthesis or an orthosis on a person's functioning. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective clinical study. METHODS: A short list of ICF codes was compiled from Annex 9 and used for one month for all patients seen at the author's P&O outpatie

Adolescent gambling: research and clinical implications.

Gambling is a popular and prevalent behavior among adolescents. As compared with adults, adolescents have been found to have high rates of problem and pathological gambling. However, relatively few adolescents seek help for gambling problems. In this article, we review adolescent gambling, including problem and pathological levels. We consider the neurobiology of adolescent gambling, health correlates of different levels of gambling participation, and manners in which current prevention and treatment strategies might be further developed and optimized.

Advancing treatment strategies for pathological gambling.

Experiences from treatment trials are described. The use of structured instruments for subject characterization and symptom change assessment is discussed and the challenges of treating specific groups (e.g., those with co-occurring alcohol use disorders) explored. Treatment for pathological gambling might be advanced most rapidly through collaborative multi-center efforts.

Psychosocial variables associated with adolescent gambling.

The authors empirically examined the relations between several psychosocial variables associated with adolescent problem gambling. Participants were 2,336 students in Grades 7-13, and all completed a questionnaire regarding gambling activities, gambling severity, perceived social support, drug and alcohol dependence, and various social, emotional, and behavioral problems. With respect to gambling severity, 4.9% of adolescents met the criteria for pathological gambling, and 8.0% were found to be at risk. Psychosocial difficulties associated with problem gambling include poor perceived familial …
