Gastric filling ultrasound in assessing gastrointestinal motility in type 2 diabetic patients with neuropathy: A clinical study.

AIMS: This study evaluates gastrointestinal motility dysfunction in type 2 diabetes patients with and without neuropathy compared to healthy individuals using gastric filling ultrasound. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled 210 participants: 50 healthy controls, 106 diabetic controls (without neuropathy), and 54 observation patients (with neuropathy). Gastric emptying times and fullness scores were measured at 30 and 60 min post-meal. Small intestinal transit rates were assessed at baseline and 60 min. Gastric capacity and wall thickness were evaluated by ultrasound, while motilin and glucagon

Effects of osmoreceptor stimulation on human duodenal motor activity.

The motor responses of the human duodenum to saline solutions of varying osmolality were examined in order to investigate the possible role played by the upper intestine in the control of gastric efflux of hyperosmolar material. During fasting, delivery of the solutions into the duodenum increased duodenal motor activity and intraduodenal pressure, the magnitude of the response increasing with osmolality. At the highest osmolalities, a regular duodenal motor pattern was induced in some individuals which was indistinguishable from fasting phase III activity. After feeding, hyperosmolar saline a

Behavioral and metabolic effects of S-adenosylmethionine and imipramine in the Flinders Sensitive Line rat model of depression.

Depression is associated with dysregulation of methyl group metabolism such as low S-adenosylmethionine (SAM). We previously reported that Flinders Sensitive Line (FSL) rats, an animal model of depression, had lower concentrations of liver SAM than the control rats, Flinders Resistant Line (FRL) rats. The present study investigated if SAM supplementation may correct liver SAM and behavioral abnormalities in this model. Moreover, we compared one-carbon (C1) metabolites, neurotransmitters, and gastrointestinal (GI) transit in SAM-treated versus imipramine (IMI)-treated animals. FSL rats received

How to use a plain abdominal radiograph in children with functional defecation disorders.

Defecation-related functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), such as infant dyschezia, functional constipation and functional non-retentive faecal incontinence, as defined by the Rome IV criteria, are common problems in childhood. The symptomatology varies from relatively mild, such as crying before passage of soft stools or infrequent defecation to severe problems with faecal impaction and the daily involuntary loss of faeces in the underwear. Conventional radiography is widely available, relatively cheap and is non-invasive. The drawback however, is radiation exposure. This review descr

Diagnosis and treatment of slow-transit constipation.

In today's society, with changes in diet structure and living habits, drug abuse, and psychosomatic diseases, the prevalence of constipation is increasing. Currently, there is a lack of unified diagnostic criteria for constipation, and therapeutic approaches lack standardization. This often leads to an inability to select appropriate treatment methods based on the patient's specific condition. Consequently, a significant proportion of constipation patients do not achieve satisfactory therapeutic outcomes. This is particularly true for slow-transit constipation (STC), which is characterized by

[Chinese surgical diagnosis and treatment consensus on slow transit constipation (2023 edition)].

In recent years, advancements have been made in both basic and surgical research of slow-transit constipation (STC). However, compelling references for surgeons in the clinical practice of STC have been lacking, particularly on preoperative evaluation and the choice of surgical procedures. In order to further standardize the diagnosis, assessment and surgical management of STC, Chinese Medical Doctor Association Anorectal Doctor Branch and its Functional Diseases Committee selected relevant experts in the field of STC surgery in China to form the Editorial and Review Committee of the Expert Co

Ameliorating effects of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation on a mouse model of constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome.

Limited treatment options have been shown to alter the natural course of constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C). Therefore, safer and more effective approaches are urgently needed. We investigated the effects of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) in a mouse model of IBS-C. In the current study, C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into normal control, IBS-C model control, sham-electrostimulation (sham-ES), taVNS, and drug treatment groups. The effects of taVNS on fecal pellet number, fecal water content, and gastrointestinal transit were evaluated in IBS-…

An irritable bowel syndrome subtype defined by species-specific alterations in faecal microbiota.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder that may be triggered by enteric pathogens and has also been linked to alterations in the microbiota and the host immune response. The authors performed a detailed analysis of the faecal microbiota in IBS and control subjects and correlated the findings with key clinical and physiological parameters. DESIGN: The authors used pyrosequencing to determine faecal microbiota composition in 37 IBS patients (mean age 37 years; 26 female subjects; 15 diarrhoea-predominant IBS, 10 constipation-predomin

Involvement of endogenous CCK and CCK1 receptors in colonic motor function.

Cholecystokinin (CCK) is a brain-gut peptide; it functions both as a neuropeptide and as a gut hormone. Although the pancreas and the gallbladder were long thought to be the principal peripheral targets of CCK, CCK receptors are found throughout the gut. It is likely that CCK has a physiological role not only in the stimulation of pancreatic and biliary secretions but also in the regulation of gastrointestinal motility. The motor effects of CCK include postprandial inhibition of gastric emptying and inhibition of colonic transit. It is now evident that at least two different receptors, CCK(1)

Effect of starch malabsorption on fecal bile acids and neutral sterols in humans: possible implications for colonic carcinogenesis.

Epidemiological and experimental studies indicate a strong association between an elevated colon cancer risk and increased fecal excretion of secondary bile acids, neutral sterols, and prolonged gastrointestinal transit time. Starch malabsorption, on the other hand, has been reported to be a possible protective factor in colon carcinogenesis. To study the impact of starch malabsorption on these parameters, 12 healthy volunteers consumed a diet rich in starch for two 4-week periods. During a double-blind crossover trial they received the alpha-glucosidase inhibitor acarbose (BAY g 5421) in one …

Xylooligosaccharides from corn cobs alleviate loperamide-induced constipation in mice via modulation of gut microbiota and SCFA metabolism.

This study aimed to optimize the structure and efficacy of xylooligosaccharides (XOSs) from corn cobs in constipated mice. Structural analysis revealed that XOSs from corn cobs were composed of β-Xyl-(1 →4)-[β-Xyl-(1→4)]n-α/β-Xyl (n = 0-5) without any other substituents. XOS administration significantly reduced the defecation time, increased the gastrointestinal transit rate, restored the gastrointestinal neurotransmitter imbalance, protected against oxidative stress, and reversed constipation-induced colonic inflammation. Fecal metabolite and microbiota analysis showed that XOS supplementatio…

Systematic Review of the Gastrointestinal Effects of A1 Compared with A2 β-Casein.

This is the first systematic review, to our knowledge, of published studies investigating the gastrointestinal effects of A1-type bovine β-casein (A1) compared with A2-type bovine β-casein (A2). The review is relevant to nutrition practice given the increasing availability and promotion in a range of countries of dairy products free of A1 for both infant and adult nutrition. In vitro and in vivo studies (all species) were included. In vivo studies were limited to oral consumption. Inclusion criteria encompassed all English-language primary research studies, but not reviews, involving milk, fre
