This study aimed to conduct an overview of systematic reviews in the field of violence against adults with disability. Eight electronic databases as well as gray literature from January 2022 to April 2023 were searched to identify systematic reviews that focused on violence against adults with disabilities. A total of 13 high-quality systematic reviews were included in the overview. Findings show that adults with disabilities experience a higher rate of emotional and physical violence than the general population. Sociodemographic, financial, and cultural risk factors, prevention, and treatment

BACKGROUND: Women's pathways into homelessness are gendered, shaped by family dysfunction, economic precarity, and high rates of violence. Despite the profound implications for women and their children, evidence from Ethiopia remains scarce. This study explored women's early-life experiences, trajectories into and through homelessness in Addis Ababa, and the challenges and resources related to community reintegration.
METHODS: We conducted an exploratory qualitative study in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in December 2023 using semi-structured interviews. Women of reproductive age experiencing homele

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant global public health concern; one in three women and one in four men report experiencing severe physical violence, which confers high risk for IPV-related head trauma (IPV-HT). Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals are more than twice as likely to experience injuries due to physical IPV compared with their cisgender peers, yet few studies to date have assessed whether TGD individuals experience IPV-HT. Thus, the purpose of this study was to assess experiences of IPV-HT among TGD adults. TGD individuals (n = 76) completed an online sur

IMPORTANCE: Adolescent relationship abuse (ARA) and sexual violence (SV) reported among adolescents point to the need for prevention among middle school-age youths.
OBJECTIVE: To test an athletic coach-delivered relationship abuse and sexual violence prevention program among middle school male athletes.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the association between gender and suicide attempt/death and identify gender-specific risk/protective factors in adolescents/young adults.
METHODS: Systematic review (5 databases until January 2017). Population-based longitudinal studies considering non-clinical populations, aged 12-26 years, assessing associations between gender and suicide attempts/death, or evaluating their gender risk/protective factors, were included. Random effect meta-analyses were performed.
RESULTS: Sixty-seven studies were included. Females presented higher risk of suicide attempt (OR 1.96, 95

BACKGROUND: Opinion surveys about potential causes of violence against women (VAW) are uncommon. This study explores academic women's opinio … t of the interviewing author.
RESULTS: Academicians discussed the problem from the perspective of "gender-based violence" rather than "family violence". The majority of the participants stated that nonworking women of low socioeconomic status are most at risk for VAW. They indicated that psychological violence is more prevalent against educated women, whilst physical …

Image-Based Sexual Abuse (IBSA), including deepfake sexual abuse - where fake yet lifelike sexual content is generated of non-consenting persons - constitutes a growing form of digitally mediated gender-based violence that remains largely under-researched within non-Anglophonic contexts. This study explores how IBSA is constructed and perceived by both laypeople and lawyers in Greece, a Southern European setting characterised by economic precarity, traditional gender norms, and evolving yet challenging legal frameworks. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with 21 participants either originat…

We developed a new measure designed to facilitate research on the potential role of men's attitude toward sexual aggression against women in gender-based sexual violence: the Attitude toward Sexual Aggression against Women (ASAW) scale. We created a large pool of items, in which participants were asked to evaluate how bad it would be if they engaged in various sexually aggressive behaviors in a variety of scenarios. Three independent samples of men recruited from online panels (N = 380, 149, and 322) completed these items. Based on their responses, we retained 13 non-redundant items that had t

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a multi-dimensional problem. The search for best practice must consider the complexities surrounding CSA and its management in any particular society.
OBJECTIVE: Data previously gathered from service providers on CSA service provision in Trinidad and Tobago identified key deficient issues in policy and practice. In this paper, researchers aimed to bridge the gaps identified, and effect changes to improve services for CSA using an action research methodology.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Service providers from all sectors in governmental and non-government

PURPOSE: Transgender youth (those whose gender identity differs from their sex assigned at birth) experience stigma and discrimination that can place them at increased risk for poor health outcomes compared with cisgender youth (those whose gender identity aligns with their sex assigned at birth). Limited population-based data exist on disparities among transgender and cisgender youth.
METHODS: We examined differences in experiences of violence, substance use, mental health, suicide, sexual behavior, unstable housing, parental monitoring, and school connectedness among 98,174 transgender and

This article reviews the evidence about adolescent health in the Arab world, against the background of social, economic, and political change in the region, and with a particular focus on gender. For the literature review, searches were conducted for relevant articles, and data were drawn from national population- and school-based surveys and from the Global Burden of Disease project. In some parts of the Arab world, adolescents experience a greater burden of ill health due to overweight/obesity, transport injuries, cardiovascular and metabolic conditions, and mental health disorders than thos

Gender-based domestic violence (DV) comes at great costs to the victims and society at large. Yet, many women hold the view that intimate partner violence (IPV) against women is appropriate behavior. This study aimed at exploring the nexus of experience of different forms of DV and acceptance of IPV as appropriate behavior. Using data from a survey of 480 out-of-school adolescent girls, the researcher shows that psychological abuse is a significant predictor of approval of DV resulting from the wife's failure to make food available for her husband with victims of abuse approving of violence ag

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of gender-based controlling behavior and types of violence committed by intimate partners against women living in an economically vulnerable area.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed with 278 women aged between 15 and 49 years, who had had at least one male intimate partner in their lives and lived in a metropolitan area of the city of Brasília, Central-West Brazil, in 2007. Resilience, commonly understood as the ability to maintain adaptive functioning in the face of adversity, has emerged as a salient entry point in the field of positive youth development. This study makes a unique contribution by exploring dimensions of resilience among adolescents in Uganda, examining associations between violence from different perpetrators and resilience, and testing whether sex moderates these relationships. Analyses are based on data from 3706 primary school students. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) identified five factors underlying the construct of resilience: Emotiona

Globally there is a growing visibility of trans, gender diverse, and non-binary people in contact with prison systems, and growing questions raised by stakeholders about the health and wellbeing of these populations under state care. This scoping review aims to map the global evidence on the key health and wellbeing issues of incarcerated trans, gender diverse, and non-binary adults and young people to enhance researchers, community and policy makers' capacity to use international evidence to develop locally relevant policies and care models. The review follows Arksey and O'Malley's (2005) fiv

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection remains an important public health concern in many countries. It is fuelled by gend … important risk factors of HIV infection among married women in India. The results also suggest that gender-based violence and an alcoholic husband may represent a significant factor of HIV infection among married women and interventions should on focus such vulnerable populations.
