Effect of external and internal loading on source-sink phosphorus dynamics of river sediment amended with iron-rich glauconite sand.

Glauconite sands (GS) are abundantly available iron (Fe)-rich minerals that are efficient in lowering the release of phosphorus (P) from sediments to the overlying water. Many river sediments are, however, net sinks for P rather than sources and it is unclear if these GS minerals also enhance the P uptake from water. This is because the concentration of Fe(III) minerals at the sediment-water interface (SWI) depends on the redox potential that is affected by physicochemical processes. This study was set-up to investigate if a sediment amendment with GS can both lower P release from the sediment

Passive sampling of herbicides above sediments at sites with losses of submerged macrophytes in a mesotrophic lake.

Declines of submerged macrophytes (SUM) were monitored in littoral zones of the deep, mesotrophic lake Suhrer See (Northern Germany) since 2017. Drastic losses coincided with intense agriculture in sandy sub-catchments and precipitation. All lines of evidence pointed to a causal connection with subsurface discharge indicating that herbicide application might have caused the effects. Passive sampling was applied in 2022 to elucidate, whether herbicides were really present at sites of losses and if so, in ecotoxicological relevant concentrations. Samplers were exposed on top of lake sediments in

Integrated effects of bioturbation, warming and sea-level rise on mobility of sulfide and metalloids in sediment porewater of mangrove wetlands.

Global warming and sea-level rise exert profound impacts on coastal mangrove ecosystems, where widespread benthic crabs change sediment properties and regulate material cycles. How crab bioturbation perturbs the mobilities of bioavailable arsenic (As), antimony (Sb) and sulfide in sediment-water systems and their variability in response to temperature and sea-level rise is still unknown. By combining field monitoring and laboratory experiments, we found that As was mobilized under sulfidic conditions while Sb was mobilized under oxic conditions in mangrove sediments. Crab burrowing greatly enh

Vertical distribution of dissimilatory iron reducing communities in the sediments of Taihu Lake.

The reduction of Fe(III) coupled with the oxidation of organic matter, primarily stimulated by dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB) under anoxic conditions, is a critical biogeochemical process in lacustrine sediments. Many single strains have been recovered and investigated, however, the changes in the diversity of culturable DIRB communities with sedimentary depth have not been fully revealed. In this study, 41 DIRB strains affiliated to ten genera of phylum Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Proteobacteria were isolated from the sediments of Taihu Lake at three depths (0-2 cm, 9-12 cm,

Combined amendment and capping of sediment with ferrihydrite and magnetite to control internal phosphorus release.

This study developed novel active capping systems with recycling convenience using ferrihydrite (Fh) combined with magnetite (Mag), and investigated the effectiveness and mechanism for the restriction of endogenous phosphorus movement from sediment into overlying water (OW) by the combined use of Fh and Mag. The Fh/Mag combined amendment effectively hindered endogenous phosphorus release from sediment to OW in dissolved oxygen (DO)-deficit environment, and the immobilization of diffusion gradient in thin film-labile phosphorus (LPDGT) and mobile phosphorus in the sediment played a key role in

Intra- and inter-habitat variation in sediment heavy metals, antibiotics and ecological risks in Mai Po RAMSAR, China.

Distribution of heavy metals (HMs) and antibiotics (ABs) in surface sediments of three habitats: mudflat, mangrove and gei wai (inter-tidal shrimp ponds), at Mai Po RAMSAR were determined with inductively coupled plasma and liquid chromatograph tandem - mass spectrometry, respectively. Eight HMs (Cr, As, Pb, Cd, Mn, Ni, Cu and Zn), and ten ABs (tetracyclines, quinolones, macrolides and sulphonamides) were detected in all habitats, with relatively lower concentration in gei wai. Ecological risk assessment based on PNEC revealed that HMs posed a higher ecological risk to microorganisms than ABs.

Cross-shelf processes of terrigenous organic matter drive mercury speciation on the east siberian shelf in the Arctic Ocean.

The cross-shelf distributions of total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg) and organic and inorganic matter, as well as the presence of the hgcA gene were investigated on the East Siberian Shelf (ESS) to understand the processes underlying the speciation of sedimentary Hg. Samples were collected from 12 stations grouped into four zones based on water depth: inner shelf (5 stations), mid-shelf (3 stations), outer shelf (2 stations), and slope (2 stations). The THg concentration in the surface sediment increased from the inner shelf (0.25 ± 0.023 nmol g-1) toward the slope (0.52 nmol g-1), and,

Iron (oxyhydr)oxides shift the methanogenic community in deep sea methanic sediment - insights from long-term high-pressure incubations.

Intermittent increases of dissolved ferrous iron concentrations have been observed in deep marine methanic sediments which is different from the traditional diagenetic electron acceptor cascade, where iron reduction precedes methanogenesis. Here we aimed to gain insight into the mechanism of iron reduction and the associated microbial processes in deep sea methanic sediment by setting up long-term high-pressure incubation experiments supplemented with ferrihydrite and methane. Continuous iron reduction was observed during the entire incubation period. Intriguingly, ferrihydrite addition shifte

Investigation of monthly residues of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water and sediment samples from Kirikkale Kizilirmak River Basin.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contain two or more benzene rings and are categorized as general environmentally harmful pollutants. PAHs occur because of various combustion and pyrolysis processes with different environmental and anthropogenic sources. The Kizilirmak River is one of the major important water sources used for drinking water and irrigation purposes in Turkey. There are important industrial facilities around the river and PAH pollution is important in terms of environmental health. This study was carried out to determine the residues of PAHs in water and sediment samples

Sorption and distribution performance of organophosphorus compound (Adenosine 5'-monophosphate)on marine sediments.

In this paper, the kinetics and thermodynamics of Adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP) sorption on the sediments obtained from the Yangtze River Estuary and adjacent areas were studied, in combination with the effects of the sediments' properties and media conditions. The kinetics curves could be described by a two-compartment first-order equation, and the equilibrium isotherms fitted well with the modified Langmuir and Freundlich models. The analysis of organic phosphorus (OP) fractions changes after sorption indicated that the contents of exchangeable or loosely sorbed PO increased most signific

Best available technique for the recovery of marine benthic communities in a gravel shore after the oil spill: A mesocosm-based sediment triad assessment.

Ecotoxicological effects of spilled oils are well documented, but study of recovery of marine benthic communities is limited. Long-term recovery of hard bottom communities during physical and biological remediations after a spill was monitored. A 60-day experiment was conducted using a mesocosm with monitoring of eight endpoints by use of the sediment quality triad (SQT). First, physical treatment of hot water + high pressure flushing maximally removed residual oils (max=93%), showing the greatest recovery among SQT variables (mean=72%). Physical cleanup generally involved adverse effects such

Dam cascade unveils sediment methylmercury dynamics in reservoirs.

Methylmercury (MeHg) can be bioaccumulated through food chains and adversely affect human health. Reservoirs are reported to stimulate MeHg production, however, the characteristics of MeHg dynamics in cascade reservoirs and the associated relations to sedimentation as well as reservoir properties remained unclear. Here we investigated sediment MeHg dynamics in eight cascade reservoirs in the upper Mekong River. We found significant differences in sediment MeHg concentration between the reservoirs, showing an increase with fluctuations along the reservoirs cascade. However, a novel relationship

Effects of Herbaceous Plants on Methylmercury Net Production and Release From Sediment After Flooding in the Water-Level Fluctuation Zone of the Jialing River.

To explore the effects of herbaceous plants on mercury (Hg) behaviors after flooding in the water-level fluctuation zone (WLFZ) of Jialing River, three typical local plants (D. pyramidalis, A. philoxeroides and C. dactylon) and their in-situ sediments were collected for flooding experiments to study the Hg dynamics of water and sediment in different treatments. The results showed that flooding increased sediment MeHg concentrations and flooded plants (especially for the D. pyramidalis) promoted this process. Similarly, the highest dissolved MeHg level and proportion of MeHg to total Hg (%MeHg)

Occurrence, allocation and geochemical controls for mercury in a typical estuarine ecosystem: Implications for the predictability of mercury species.

In this study, surface seawater, bottom seawater and surface sediments were collected from the Yellow River Estuary Area (YREA) and the Laizhou Bay (LB) to investigate the occurrence, spatial distribution and geochemical control factors for total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in different phases. The geochemical characteristics of seawater and sediments suggested significant variances in the YREA and the LB. The high contamination of Hg in the YREA showed the discharge of the Yellow River (YR) contributed significantly to the Hg contamination in the LB. The partial least squares regre

Anaerobic mercury methylators inhabit sinking particles of oxic water columns.

Increased concentration of mercury, particularly methylmercury, in the environment is a worldwide concern because of its toxicity in severely exposed humans. Although the formation of methylmercury in oxic water columns has been previously suggested, there is no evidence of the presence of microorganisms able to perform this process, using the hgcAB gene pair (hgc+ microorganisms), in such environments. Here we show the prevalence of hgc+ microorganisms in sinking particles of the oxic water column of Lake Geneva (Switzerland and France) and its anoxic bottom sediments. Compared to anoxic sedi

Toward efficient bioremediation of methylmercury in sediment using merB overexpressed Escherichia coli.

Sediment is the primary hotspot for microbial production of toxic and bio-accumulative methylmercury (MeHg). Common remediation strategies such as sediment dredging and capping can be too expensive and cannot degrade MeHg efficiently. Here, we constructed an Escherichia coli strain overexpressing merB gene (DH5α J23106) and assessed the effectiveness of this recombinant strain in degradation of MeHg in culture medium and sediment. DH5α J23106 can efficiently degrade MeHg (with initial concentration from 0.01 to 50 ng/mL) to more than 81.6% in a culture medium under anoxic and oxic conditions.

Detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in bivalve mollusks and marine sediments.

The presence of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater pose the question of whether this new pandemic virus could be released into watercourses and potentially continue to finally reach coastal waters. In this study, we employed two bivalve molluscan species from the genus Ruditapes as sentinel organisms to investigate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 signals in the marine coastal environment. Estuarine sediments from the natural clam banks were also analyzed. Viral RNA was detected by RT-qPCR, targeting IP4, E and N1 genomic regions. Positive samples were also subjected to a PMAxx-triton viability RT-qPCR assay

Assessment of concentration and distribution of total mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls in Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA.

Under the 1987 Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, the lower Green Bay and Fox River estuary have been labeled as areas of concern due to the contamination of mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from industrialization. These pollutants pose substantial health and environmental hazards for the Green Bay region. The PCBs reported in this region, including Aroclor 1242, are known to trigger carcinogenic responses in animals and mercury targets the central nervous system and vital organs. Furthermore, these compounds are extremely difficult to remove from the environment once introduced.

Benthic bioturbation: A canary in the mine for the retention and release of metals from estuarine sediments.

After the largest mining tailings spill in Brazil, the Rio Doce estuarine ecosystem was severely impacted by metal contamination. In a 28-day laboratory experiment, we examined the effects of the polychaeta Laeonereis sp. on fluxes of oxygen and metal across the sediment-water interface. The density-dependent effect of Laeonereis sp. in the oxygen and metal fluxes was tested at low and high (74 and 222 ind m-2, respectively) densities, and compared with defaunated controls. The higher worm density had an amplified effect on the oxygen flux, sediment uptake of Al and Mn, and Fe oxidation compar
