[Pedagogy of inspiration].

We often hear that the wisest about vocal reeducation and more specifically about the problem of phonatory breathing is to focus only on the exhale, leaving the inhale automatic and involontary. This carefull approach is explained by the fact that the air-intake is a normally automatic and inconscious gesture in the speech which risks indeed to become unnatural if voluntarily controlled. A training that would preserve the natural nature of the gesture thanks to the practice of relaxation, permits however to avoid this difficulty and to lead to a better rehabilitation of the phonatory behaviour

Apraxia: From Neuroanatomical Pathways to Clinical Manifestations.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Apraxia typically involves impairments in gesture production and tool use, affecting daily life activities. This article reviews current conceptualizations and developments in diagnostic and therapy. RECENT FINDINGS: Apraxia has been studied in various neurological conditions, particularly stroke and dementia, but recent studies show gesturing deficits in psychiatric populations as well. Promising results have emerged from integrative treatment approaches involving intensive practice of gestures or daily activities. However, several reviews have noted the only marginal prog…

Walking the talk--speech activates the leg motor cortex.

Speech may have evolved from earlier modes of communication based on gestures. Consistent with such a motor theory of speech, cortical orofacial and hand motor areas are activated by both speech production and speech perception. However, the extent of speech-related activation of the motor cortex remains unclear. Therefore, we examined if reading and listening to continuous prose also activates non-brachiofacial motor representations like the leg motor cortex. We found corticospinal excitability of bilateral leg muscle representations to be enhanced by speech production and silent reading. Con…

Oromotor and communication findings in joubert syndrome: further evidence of multisystem apraxia.

This study provides descriptive information in the areas of oromotor abilities and communication to better understand the spectrum of disabi … te significant motor skills deficits and oculomotor apraxia, persons with Joubert syndrome produced gestures when communicating, and those whose speech was less intelligible used a higher rate of gesture compared with those with greater verbal output. These findings suggest a new form of apraxia not previously described in the condition and are consistent …

[Apraxia and autotopoagnosia without aphasia or agraphia with compulsive language activity in right hemispheric lesion].

A 75 year-old woman was admitted with a left hemiplegia resulting from an infarct in the right middle artery's territory. Her manual preference was ambiguous from early childhood. She presented with severe bilateral apraxia, autotopoagnosia, finger agnosia, and left spatial neglect. There was, however, no aphasia nor agraphia. When the patient attempted to perform gestures on order, she compulsively produced oral or written language. In this very unusual case, dominance for gesture and dominance for language were strictly independent, each ensured by one hemisphere. The patient's performances …

A generic non-invasive neuromotor interface for human-computer interaction.

Since the advent of computing, humans have sought computer input technologies that are expressive, intuitive and universal. While diverse modalities have been developed, including keyboards, mice and touchscreens, they require interaction with a device that can be limiting, especially in on-the-go scenarios. Gesture-based systems use cameras or inertial sensors to avoid an intermediary device, but tend to perform well only for unobscured movements. By contrast, brain-computer or neuromotor interfaces that directly interface with the body's electrical signalling have been imagined to solve the

Eye and hand coarticulation during problem-solving reveals hierarchically organized planning.

During everyday activities, such as preparing a cup of coffee or traveling across cities, we often plan ahead and execute sequences of actio … ndings. First, consistent with previous studies, participants segment the problem into sequences of gestures, defined as the task execution (gaze and cursor movements) in the time interval between the onset of two consecutive fixations. Typically, within each gesture, gaze focuses on a target and remains fixed until the cursor reaches it, then shifts to th …

Word-initial consonant-vowel coordination in a lexical pitch-accent language.

Previous research has acknowledged the effect of prosody on inter-gestural coordination, but specifically the effect of tones is still understudied. This paper has a two-fold purpose. First, it aims to explore effects of the Swedish word accents on word-initial consonant-vowel (CV) coarticulation. Second, it aims to revisit the existing evidence for tonal integration. Based on Articulatory Phonology, it has been suggested that tones - in tone languages - are integrated in the gestural organization of a syllable-initial CV sequence in the same manner as would an additional consonant (CCV), indi

Praxis and writing in a right-hander with crossed aphasia.

Studies of patients with brain lesions have demonstrated that language and praxis are mediated by dissociable networks. However, language has the capacity to influence the selection of purposeful actions. The abilities to use language and to program purposeful movements are often mediated by networks that have anatomic proximity. With hemispheric injury, the diagnosis of apraxia is often confounded by the specific influence of language impairments on the ability to select and produce transitive gestures. We report a patient who illustrates this confound. This patient is a right-handed man who …

The "hands" teaching methods applied to the anatomy related to anorectal surgery.

AIM: The knowledge of the regional anatomy could assist us in performing various operations very well. However, mastering the regional anatomy very well is often a challenge, especially for a young surgeon. METHOD: "Hands" teaching methods (using gesture to simulate anatomical structure) is a simple, impressive and interesting teaching method in medical education. Our goal is to find some simple gestures that could mimic some important anatomical structures in current anorectal surgery. RESULTS: We have obtained a series of interesting and simple gestures that could exactly mimic many import…

Early communicative skills of children with Klinefelter syndrome.

Many studies reported the presence of language impairments in children and adolescents with Klinefelter syndrome (KS). However, the first st … children appeared to be significantly related to their later lexical skills; whereas, the number of gestures produced by children with KS appeared to be related to their later lexical abilities. The early detection of language risk factors will allow early intervention and careful monitoring of these children's communicative development.

Neuropsychological changes related to unilateral lenticulostriate infarcts.

According to previous studies, focal capsulostriatal lesions may produce aphasia, hemineglect, gestural apraxia, frontal lobe dysfunction, and memory impairment. A few reports of capsulostriate infarcts secondary to involvement of lenticulostriate arteries have confirmed that aphasia and hemineglect may occur whereas gestural apraxia, anosognosia and frontal-lobe symptoms are rare. Most studies used CT scan assessment and did not exclude possible associated lesions. Neuropsychological changes in 11 patients with lenticulostriate infarcts diagnosed by CT scan were prospectively investigated. MR

Pantomime comprehension and ideomotor apraxia.

In a prior study it was shown that apraxic patients with posterior infarctions that included the parietal lobe could not discriminate between gestures. In this study these observations were replicated using a nonverbal paradigm in which the subjects did not have to discriminate between gestures, but instead had to comprehend their meaning. Pantomimed acts on videotape were shown to six apraxic-aphasic patients, seven nonapraxic-aphasic patients, and six normal subjects. Four drawings were also shown, one of which matched the pantomime (for example, if the pantomime was of hammering, one drawin…

A database of upper limb surface electromyogram signals from demographically diverse individuals.

Upper limb based neuromuscular interfaces aim to provide a seamless way for humans to interact with technology. Among noninvasive interfaces, surface electromyogram (EMG) signals hold significant promise. However, their sensitivity to physiological and anatomical factors remains poorly understood, raising questions about how these factors influence gesture decoding across individuals or groups. To facilitate the study of signal distribution shifts across individuals or groups of individuals, we present a dataset of upper limb EMG signals and physiological measures from 91 demographically diver

Assessing Limb Apraxia in Quebec: Normative Study of the Brief Battery for the Evaluation of Praxis in Healthy French-Speaking Adults.

OBJECTIVE: This study presents normative data for the Batterie Brève d'Évaluation des Praxies (BBEP), a brief screening tool developed to assess symbolic gestures, pantomimes, and imitation of meaningless gestures-three domains commonly impaired in limb apraxia. While the BBEP was originally validated in a French population, no normative data have been available for French-speaking adults in Quebec. Given that cultural, linguistic, and demographic factors may influence gesture production and interpretation, the current study aimed to generate region-specific reference values to support accurat…
